Osteomyelitis is an infection of bone and bone marrow that was coined in 1834 and refers to inflammation of bone. It can remain localized or spread through the bone. It is classified based on duration as acute, subacute, or chronic, and based on mechanism as hematogenous, exogenous, or by host response. Common causes are trauma, prosthetic devices, and immunocompromised states. Symptoms include fever, pain, and swelling. Diagnosis involves aspirating pus, blood tests, and imaging like x-ray, CT, or MRI. Treatment is based on antibiotics and possible surgery to debride infected tissue.
