Further validation is underway in endemic areas, along with developing an LFD to identify SAT1 and SAT2 FMDV serotypes.

The development of ELISA assays using monoclonal antibodies for the detection of Lumpy Skin Disease viruses allows for simple serological surveillance. Analysis of sera from experimentally infected animals found that the competitive ELISA and trapping-indirect ELISA assays developed appear to be promising tools for controlling the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease. MLVA amplified and analyzed 7 loci to produce DNA fingerprints. It identified 60 patterns among 235 isolates, with 5 patterns accounting for 59% of isolates. MLVA provided differentiation within phage types and antibiotic resistance patterns. However, some loci provided little discrimination, and known clusters were indistinguishable by MLVA. While MLVA offered improved differentiation over other methods, the study concluded it only provided an additional level of resolution and that changing to another MLVA method may be better for international outbreak investigation.
