Interventional cardiologists and their staff are exposed to high levels of radiation during long, complex cardiac procedures. Radiation exposure has increased 6-fold from 1980 to 2014 for cardiovascular imaging and intervention procedures. Interventional cardiologists have the highest radiation exposure of any medical professional, and exposure increases the risk of developing cancer over 10 years after exposure. Adopting techniques like monitoring exposure, maximizing imaging quality while limiting radiation exposure, increasing distance from radiation sources, and using shielding can help reduce radiation risks for medical professionals and patients.
