Operation âBlue Starâ is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as âdistorted thinkingâ.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
Â
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesarâs dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empireâs birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empireâs society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

4. .
For example.
Imagine you are are given this topic to
talk about:
Talk for three minutes about your mother. Include: her age,
physical appearance, character, what she does, what she likes
doing in her free time, her experiences⌠And what you feel about
her.
ď˝
5. First thing : say âhelloâ and your name, that
is, introduce yourself.
Then you say what you are going to talk
about.
ď˝ Always try to use the vocabulary and
grammar we have studied this year
6. Hello, my name is Felipe HernĂĄndez and I am going to
talk about my mother.
My motherâs name is Rita. She was born in July 1960, so
she is now 53 years old. She is quite slim and tall. She is
slim because she does sport and she has a healthy diet.
She has long black hair and brown eyes and , I think, she
is really beautiful and still attractive for her ageâŚ
About her character/ as for her character/ as far as her
character is concerned I must say she is a bit bossy/
serious/ , but she is also generous, extrovert/
talkativeâŚ
7. She hardly ever gets angry, but when she does⌠wow she really gets furious. But in general, she is very sweet
to us.
She has three children, I am the youngest/oldest
oneâŚShe is not working at the moment, but she used
to work as a secretary in an office⌠She stopped
working when she had my sister Elena(her second
child). So, since my sister was born she has been a
housewife. .. (for twelve years now!)
Everyday she gets up early and she does the typical
things in the house â you know?- she cleans, makes the
beds, cooks and does the shopping⌠She doesnât like
cooking very much, but I love her food. We all love her
food at homeâŚ
8. She has always liked romantic films and hated science fiction or
westerns⌠She also loves reading, especially novels by Agatha Christie.
AndâŚ., as I said before, she also enjoys doing sport. She goes swimming
twice a week and, when she has time/ can, she does yoga in Las
Palmas, where she goes with a few friends⌠She doesnât like sports like
football, thatâs the reason why she sometimes argues with my father,
because he LOVES it.
She used to travel a lot before she got married , but she canât do it so
often nowâŚ
She has been to Italy, New York, IndiaâŚShe would like to travel more, but
nowadays she canât because she has no moneyâŚ
She is really proud of her family- and so are we!
I really believe She is a great mother, she is affectionate, sensitive and
reliable. And she is also generous and a hard-working woman, whom I
love because, apart from being my mother, she is also a good friendâŚ
Well, thatâs all I can say right now about my mother. ď
9. ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
First I must sayâŚ
About her character/ as for her character/ as far
as her character is concernedâŚ
You know?
Thatâs (the reason) why I donâtâŚ
I donât know if you see/ understand what I mean
Well, thatâs what I think/ my opinion
Itâs really/ very/ quite interesting
I (donât) think it isâŚ
I am not quite sure butâŚ
I donât know how to explain, but itâs likeâŚ
10.
11. ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
Read carefully what you have to do or say before you
start.
Sometimes you can be given a topic you actually
donât like or do not agree with. Thatâs why you are
also given some ideas to help you follow the
âconsignaâ.
Student A always starts, presenting/
introducing the point.
12. Student A
You and your partner have won one million euros in the
lottery. But you both want to do different things. You want to
buy a house in the country and travel around the world.
These are your ideas:
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
We only live once
You want to visit those places you have only seen on TV
A house is always necessary to live. And the countryside
is always more peaceful and healthierâŚ
Your own ideas
13. Student B
You and your partner have won one million euros in the
lottery. But you both want to do different things. You want to
buy a house in the city and give the rest of the money to
the poor.
Your ideas:
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
We are in times of crisis. A lot of people need helpâŚ
Travelling is a waste of time and money.
A flat in the city is better than a house in the country. The city
offers lots of facilities that the country does not.
14. B
A
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
So, Juani, what are we
going to do with all this
money? Oh! I canât
believe weâve won one
million euros!!!
What? !!!To the poor?!!! Are
you kidding?
Oh no⌠I disagree completely.
This is a big opportunity for us
to travel, spend money, buy
thingsâŚand, I want a house in
the countryâŚ
Really? Why?>
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
You are right it is so
difficult to believe, but
weâve been luckyâŚ
You know ? Iâve thought
about it. I think we should
buy a flat and give the rest
of the money to the poor.
No, I think itâs a great
ideaâŚ
In the country? Are you
going to become a farmer? I
think a flat in the city is
more practicalâŚ
<BecauseâŚ.
15. ď˝
ď˝
A: Ok. Iâll tell you what we can do, letâs travel
somewhere, buy a house outside the city, but not too
far and if we still have some money left, we can give it
to the poor..What do you think?
B: Ok. I think thatâs a great idea. Now we agree!
16. ď˝
When we interact we need to give our opinion or
ask for the other personâs opinion.
We agree or disagree.
We interrupt.
We listen.
We suggest.
We refuse.
ď˝
Etc
ď˝
Thatâs what we call âfunctional languageâ:
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
17. USEFUL LANGUAGE
Inviting and suggesting
ď˝
1. Do you want to come
to the cinema with me?
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
2. Would you like to go
hiking this weekend?
No thanks. I'm kind of
tired right now.
ď˝
3. How about going
swimming on Friday?
Sure, I'd love to. What
time should we meet?
ď˝
Oh Thatâs a great idea.
4.Would you like to do
something different
tomorrow?
ď˝
Sounds like a great idea.
Where do you want to
go?
18. Would you like come with us?
Would you like to go see a movie?
⢠Yes, please.
⢠Sure. Thanks
⢠Okay. Thank you
ď˝ Sure. I'd love to.
ď˝ Yeah. Good idea
ď˝ Great. What time?
ď˝ Sounds like fun.
ď˝ All right. When and where?
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
No, thank you
No, but thanks for
offering.
I'm sorry, but I can't.
No, but thanks for
inviting me.
Sorry. I'm busy this
weekend/tonightâŚ
I don't think I can.
How about some other
time?
19. Asking for Opinions
ď˝ What do you think?
ď˝ What's your opinion?
ď˝ What are your ideas?
ď˝ How do you feel about
that?
ď˝ What about you?
Giving Opinions
ď˝ I think we should get a
new car.
ď˝ I don't think we need
one.
ď˝ I believe (that) smoking
should be banned.
ď˝ I don't believe (that) it
should be illegal.
ď˝ In my opinion, Gone with
the Wind is the best
movie ever made.
ď˝ I think that it's the right
thing to do.
ď˝ I don't think thatâs a
good idea.
20. Rejoinders are quick responses to show that you
are interested or paying attention while your partner
is speaking.
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
(Oh) Really? That's interesting.
What a pity/shame!
Oh really? How awful!
Iâve won
the
I canât believe it!
lottery!!
You are kidding!
You must be joking!
(ECHO QUESTIONS)
ď˝
ď˝
Are you?
Donât you?
Have
you?
21. Agreeing
ď˝ I agree
ď˝ You're right.
ď˝ Me too.
ď˝ Me neither.
ď˝ So do/am/did I
ď˝ Neither could/would/
was I
ď˝ That's right./ Good
idea.
ď˝ I think that's a good
idea.
Disagreeing
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
I disagree. I donât
agree (with you)
I don't think so.
(No.) That's not right.
Yes, but...
I donât
I do!
(I'm sorry, but) I don't
agree.
22. ď˝
Your fluency and pronunciation can improve a
lot just by following these easy tips:
ď˝
Listen while you read and repeat
You can read and listen to lots of texts in website
pages in the net
You can listen to the English songs you like and
sing!
ď˝
ď˝
23. It is always important to:
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
ď˝
Try to relax
Remember to use the language studied in class.
Never, ever, speak in Spanish during the test.
Always believe you CAN (youâve been doing it in class all
the time)
Know that the teacher is a friend, not a judge!
