When people think about WebRTC, they think about video calls inside a web browser. WebRTC is much more than that. WebRTC can be used to create fundamentally better experiences by embedding live, peer-to-peer communications in SaaS products, mobile apps, and websites. But what is the state of WebRTC today? Digium 'Demo & Eggs' Breakfast Presentation slides, as shown at WebRTC World III on November 21, 2013. These slides we used in a presentation which also featured a live demo of a WebRTC-enabled Asterisk appliance (based on a Raspberry Pi just for fun) serving a web page that contained the JsSIP soft phone. Audience members were able to connect to our WiFi network and use Chrome or Firefox to browse to this page, and them make a call to each other, to a Digium phone, to hear a message from Allison (THE Voice of Asterisk) or to go into a conference call with each other.

OSGi DevCon 2008 The OSGi HttpService is very lightweight and restricted to very early Servlet specifications (missing filters, listeners, etc.). This short talk will give an overview about a lightweight web container implementation based on the OSGi HttpService. This container will parse web.xml and add missing functionality (welcome files, filters, listeners) to HttpServices using wrapper technologies. This container service will also be provided as an Eclipse extension point and as bundle observing all bundles within the platform for a /WEB-INF/web.xml file (extender pattern). The implementation is very similar to specification of OSGI RFC 66 – OSGi web container. Based on this service, a new type of web application can be designed. It is based on multiple small web applications (like WAR files, here: OSGi bundles) which can be combined into one single URI space, whereas the URIs can be mixed together on a deep level. The talk will give an overview about the implementation, usage scenarios and probably a simple online demo.

OSGi is gaining popularity as enabling technology for building embedded system in residential, automotive and M2M markets. In all these contexts it is often necessary to communicate with IP and non-IP devices by using various protocols such as Zigbee, ZWave, KNX, UPnP etc. In order to provide a convenient programming model suitable for the realization of end-to-end services it is very useful to define and apply an abstraction layer which unifies the work with the different devices. This presentation summarizes the existing approaches for the realization of a device abstraction layer and comments their advantages and disadvantages. A reference architecture based on the experience gained from numerous real-life projects is presented and explained.

The latest hardware AvalonMiner 721 contains 72 customized ASIC processors named Canaan A3212 which are harmonized together and then across potentially thousands of other AvalonMiners, to do SHA-256 hashing calculations.From the software toolchain all the way to OpenWrt used in Canaan's AvalonMiner Controller, this presentation describes the entire process from start to finish how the software is built, developed, launched and maintained. Of specific interest are the contributions by Canaan back to the Open Source community, including to CGMiner, OpenWRT and other projects.

When using GStreamer for creating media middleware and media infrastructures performance becomes critical for achieving the appropriate scalability without degrading end-user QoE. However, GStreamer does not provide off-the-shelf tools for that objective. In this talk, we present efforts carried out for improving the performance of the Kurento Media Server during the last year. We present our main principle: “you cannot improve what you cannot measure”. Developing on it, we introduce different techniques for benchmarking large GStreamer pipelines including callgrind, time profiling, gst-meta profiling, chain-profiling, etc. We present results for different pipeline configurations and topologies. After that, we introduce some evolutions for GStreamer which could be helpful for optimizing performance such as the pervasive use of buffer-lists, the introduction of thread-pools or the appropriate management of queues. To conclude, we present some preliminary work carried out in the GStreamer community for implementing such optimization and we discuss their advantages and drawbacks.

WebRTC is one of the main trends on the multimedia arena in the last few years. The ability of bringing real-time audio and video to WWW browsers opens new horizons for developers to create context aware customized applications for inter-human communications. However, for WebRTC technologies to work seamlessly in WWW applications, it’s necessary to manage with a number of present and future complex challenges. In this talk, we present the experience of the Kurento Media Server team in creating a WebRTC endpoint for GStreamer. We describe the main problems and limitations basing on current GStreamer status describing which parts of WebRTC standards can be currently implemented with GStreamer and which parts require further evolutions and efforts from the community. We will also describe the plans and drafts that are emerging at different standardization groups, including the WebRTC WG at W3C and the RTCWeb WG at IETF. Basing on this, we will try to forecast how WebRTC technologies in particular, but also how real-time multimedia communications in general, may be evolving in the next couple of years and the activities that the GStreamer community should be considering for adapting to these evolutions. In particular, we shall introduce in detail topics such as the following: • The evolution of ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment). • Congestion control for RTC streams. • Implementing WebRTC security securely • Implementing and optimizing the AVPF profile for RTP • Benchmarking WebRTC: stats metrics • Managing sensor data through DataChannels.

Telecom operators face numerous challenges in their core communications business. We are past the point of "peak telephony" while VoLTE deployment is slow and patchy. End-users are fragmenting their use of voice and video, as "best of breed" applications emerge, while other software and websites embed new forms of communications with WebRTC. Telecom and cable operators have a large role to play here - they too can extend, build or resell WebRTC services, sometimes standalone, and sometimes linked to their existing network infrastructure and IMS platforms. Yet WebRTC highlights the organisational challenges for operators - reconciling different business units & service domains, and changing their culture to embrace developers, design-led mentality & more acceptance of risk. But with 6bn+ WebRTC devices expected to be in the market by 2019, telcos have a huge addressable market.

To gain and retain user trust, cloud providers must be able to deploy tenants’ applications, store their data securely and ensure compliance with multiple regulations and standards. Security compliance auditing is the obvious solution, but several challenges related to the particular specificities of the cloud are limiting the potential benefit of applying current auditing practices and tools. Moving toward a continuous automated compliance verification model that provides tenants with complete compliance visibility is the key to successfully managing security risks in the cloud.

It is a known fact that embedded system complexity doesn't stop increasing and model-driven software development turns more and more out to be an adequate approach to keeping this complexity under control. But it is still a major hassle to provide corresponding integrated tool environments which are sufficiently domain-oriented, scalable, and robust. Eclipse as an open and extensible tool platform is a very good starting point but not a solution per se. The Eclipse Modeling Project provides many of the additionally required building blocks but is very fragmented and not up to the point where it could provide the level of tool support embedded system designers expect. The recently created Sphinx project is meant to significantly improve this situation. It will be seeded with code from Artop – a platform for creating modeling tools supporting the AUTOSAR standard which has already been deployed at several larger automotive companies. Complementary building blocks will come from the Papyrus project. Sphinx will provide a modeling tool platform enabling IDE-like tool support for specific modeling languages to be developed at reasonable effort and cost. It will leverage and foster the industrial strength known from Artop and head towards a domain- and vendor-independent interoperability layer (backbone) for modeling tools of any kind.

Today millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum is valued mainly because it can be used to achieve high speeds and capacities when combined with spectrum assets below 6GHz. But it can provide other benefits as well. For example, mmWave spectrum makes it possible to use a promising new wireless backhaul solution for 5G New Radio – integrated access and backhaul (IAB) – to densify networks with multi-band radio sites at street level. This Ericsson Technology Review article explains the IAB concept at a high level, presenting its architecture and key characteristics, as well as examining its advantages and disadvantages compared with other backhaul technologies. Ericsson Technology Review: Optimizing UICC modules for IoT applications

Commonly referred to as SIM cards, the universal integrated circuit cards (UICCs) used in all cellular devices today are in fact complex and powerful minicomputers capable of much more than most Internet of Things (IoT) applications require. Until a simpler and less costly alternative becomes available, action must be taken to ensure that the relatively high price of UICC modules does not hamper IoT growth. This Ericsson Technology Review article presents two mid-term approaches. The first is to make use of techniques that reduce the complexity of using UICCs in IoT applications, while the second is to use the UICCs’ excess capacity for additional value generation. Those who wish to exploit the potential of the UICCs to better support IoT applications have the opportunity to use them as cryptographic storage, to run higher-layer protocol stacks and/or as supervisory entities, for example.

Beyond its abilities to reduce network traffic and improve user experience, edge computing will also play a critical role in enabling use cases for ultra-reliable low-latency communication in industrial manufacturing and a variety of other sectors. Ericsson Technology Review: Meeting 5G latency requirements with inactive state

Low latency communication and minimal battery consumption are key requirements of many 5G and IoT use cases, including smart transport and critical control of remote devices. Thanks to Ericsson’s 4G/5G research activities and lessons learned from legacy networks, we have identified solutions that address both of these requirements by reducing the amount of signaling required during state transitions, and shared our discoveries with the 3GPP. This Ericsson Technology Review article explains the why and how behind the new Radio Resource Control (RRC) state model in the standalone version of the 5G New Radio standard, which features a new, Ericsson-developed state called inactive. On top of overcoming latency and battery consumption challenges, the new state also increases overall system capacity by decreasing the processing effort in the network.
