Textbooks are increasingly expensive, placing a financial burden on students who often cannot afford them. As a result, some students attempt courses without the required textbooks, putting them at a disadvantage and diminishing learning outcomes. The proposal suggests addressing this by adopting open-access textbooks that are written by faculty, peer-reviewed, and made available electronically to students for free to improve access and learning.

However, OER also face challenges such as ensuring the quality of growing material, sustaining free OER sites over time, and increasing public understanding of OER as it is still a relatively new concept.

The University of Leeds library changed their focus for student inductions from providing passive, out-of-context information to promoting the library's support and opportunities. They introduced an online Library Guide and quiz to cover practical information. This allowed face-to-face time to focus on resources, study spaces, and developing skills to boost employability. This legislation will be discussed along with the positive and negative impacts it is having on institutions. Lastly, you will learn some of the best practices from across the state as institutions are handling the situation differently and getting creative with their course offerings.
Collaborative learning classroom presentation
Collaborative learning spaces have evolved from early labs and lecture halls to modern classrooms designed for group work and active learning. UW-Madison has 62 collaborative learning classrooms across campus with a total of over 2,000 seats that see an average weekly use of 18-32 classes. These spaces feature movable furniture, whiteboards, and monitors to facilitate group work and project-based learning. Peer institutions also utilize collaborative learning classrooms to varying degrees depending on student population size. Several examples of UW-Madison's collaborative learning classrooms are described in detail.

This document summarizes a usability study conducted by Dawn Lowe-Wincentsen and Aja Bettencourt-McCarthy to redesign subject guides at an academic library. The study used focus groups, A/B testing, card sorting, and personas to gather feedback from students, faculty, and librarians. The results supported reorganizing the library website and creating a video library in addition to redesigning the subject guides. Next steps include continuous improvements, additional testing, and reporting findings to the university.

High textbook costs disproportionately impact first-generation, minority, and low-income students. These costs can be especially hard to swallow in introductory courses outside a student’s major. While e-textbooks may lower the initial price-tag, they cannot be resold and are not ideal for all learners. But there’s another option: You can provide immediate, free digital access to an open textbook, with a low-cost print option available through the bookstore for students who prefer print. You can do it quickly, without sacrificing the convenience of supplementary materials, and if you’re feeling intimidated, the library can help. Learn more in this lightning session!

CCCOER: Impact of OER Adoption Findings
Open educational resources (OER) efficacy research shows that the use of OER does not negatively impact student success metrics such as grades, course completion, retention, and persistence rates. In numerous research studies involving more than 46,00 students across different types of institutions, Hilton (2016) found that students performed comparably in courses using OER vs. traditional materials.
Join us to hear from two 2017-18 Open Education Research Group Fellows as they share their research conducted at a community college and a private university about how high textbooks prices and open textbook adoptions affect students. Regina Gong, from Lansing Community College, will share her research on open textbook adoptions in high-enrollment, multi-section introductory courses (psychology and economics). David Rose, from American University in Washington, DC, will share his research which shows that rising textbook prices similarly affect students at an expensive private university as has been demonstrated at more affordable public institutions (Are Private Universities Exempt from Student Concerns About Textbook Costs? A Survey of Students at American University).

Launching An OER Initiative at Your Institution

They will share steps for launching an OER initiative including engaging faculty and librarians, importance of administrator buy-in, and support from instructional design to ensure effective, accessible, and re-usable open courses.
Bucks County Community College (PA) is engaged in the final year of a two-year, funded initiative to transition sections of eleven high-enrollment courses to use of OER and library resources that are free to students. The initiative brings together faculty course developers, faculty librarians, an instructional designer and a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) consultant to transform the entire course.
Central Lakes College (MN) has approached OER adoption, course redesign, and the authoring of new OER materials through faculty participation in cross-disciplinary collaborative OER Learning Circles. The online learning circles provide interactive support to faculty as they work through each of three pathways in adopting, using, and authoring Open Educational Resources.
