Navigating the Container Orchestration MazeAlex Vranceanu
With Docker adoption on the rise in many organisations, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to manage multiple containerized environments across clusters and infrastructure providers.
Starting from the question of what do we use to manage our Kubernetes clusters in cloud or on-premise, we’ll look at a head-to-head comparison of major Container Orchestration and Management platforms in the enterprise and open-source world.
RedHat OpenShift Container Platform, Docker Enterprise, DC/OS, Rancher and Spinnaker and the main platforms which we’ll be taking a closer look at and I hope that this comparison will help make a more informed choice for a Container Management platform. Looking forward to discussing the above and possibly other options with you.
For those interested after the presentation, we could have a hands-on session with all of the above platforms, to get a real feeling of each one.
This document discusses ideas and technologies for building scalable software systems and processing big data. It covers:
1. Bi-modal distribution of developers shapes architecture/design and the need for loosely/tightly coupled code.

The 12 Factor App methodology provides guidelines for building software-as-a-service applications in the cloud. It advocates for codebases that are tracked in revision control, explicit declaration of dependencies, separation of configuration from code, treating backing services as attached resources, and strict separation between build, release, and run stages. The methodology also includes guidelines for processes, port binding, concurrency, disposability, keeping development and production environments similar, and treating logs as event streams. Following the 12 factors can help applications maximize portability, be more robust and agile, and scale smoothly by avoiding reliance on implicit tools or behaviors.
Deploying PHP applications on the cloud can be a tricky task, especially when it comes to automation and clustered environments that scale up and down. If you’re looking for ways to improve or automate your code deployment methods and use continuous integration and delivery, this session is for you.

XPDS14: OpenXT - Security and the Properties of a Xen Virtualisation Platform...The Linux Foundation
Released as Open Source Software (OSS) in June 2014, OpenXT is a collection of hardened Linux VMs configured to provide a user facing Xen platform for client devices. This default configuration was mostly static, applying some disaggregation techniques to segregate system components based on a general threat analysis. The goals embodied in
this code base up to its release produced a one-size-fits-most configuration with extensibility in specific areas to encapsulate 3rd party value-add.
With a community now forming around OpenXT we must come to terms with the limitations of the this approach. In this talk Philip will define what OpenXT is and in this definition, show that OpenXT can meet the varied needs of the security and virtualization community through the
construction of a toolkit for the configurable disaggregation of a Xen platform.

Deploying NGINX in Cloud Native KubernetesKangaroot
Using cloud-native application services is easy, it “just works”. Many customers choose them without giving it a second thought. However, these app services vary from cloud to cloud, with differing levels of quality and numbers of features making visibility and control inconsistent across clouds.
And then there is cost…it’s hard to know what your deployment is going to cost until after it’s been built. Often the services must be compiled in a piecemeal fashion and many products carry bloated code that increases costs.
Finally, security is often an afterthought. Moreover, SecOps teams struggle to keep up with the breakneck app release cadence that has become typical. Often they are seen as DevOps viewing them as a major constraint on the ability to deliver software quickly.
In this workshop, we showcase the NGINX solutions for cloud native Kubernetes that will allow you to:
- Reduce tool sprawl and provide a standard set of services

Cloud demystified, what remains after the fog has lifted. Kangaroot
The document provides an introduction to cloud computing concepts from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to Platform as a Service (PaaS) to Software as a Service (SaaS) to Database as a Service (DBaaS). It discusses different cloud models including private, public, multi-cloud and hybrid clouds. It also covers cloud native technologies like Kubernetes and microservices. The document cautions that while cloud promises flexibility and agility, the realities of cloud adoption require assessing one's specific business needs and whether a cloud provider can truly deliver the desired advantages. It promotes BigAnimal as a fully managed PostgreSQL database service in the cloud to help enterprises with their cloud journeys.
From NetOps to DevOps, modern app teams need a self‑service, API‑driven platform that integrates easily into CI/CD workflows to accelerate app deployment and makes app lifecycle management easier – whether your app has a hybrid or microservices architecture.

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.
