Open Revolution or Shades of Grey?: Open Resources on the Front Lines of Education (WILU 2013)

Presented at WILU on May 8, 2013 at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Abstract: “Free” does not always mean better, but in times of rapid technological change and financial constraint, openly available online resources can provide students in higher education with enhanced learning opportunities. Instruction librarians have been increasingly embracing these possibilities, drawing students’ attention to open access journals, open education resources, open data, massive open online courses (MOOCs), open source software, and digitized media in the public domain. The proliferation of these resources holds much promise for teaching and learning. However, the quantity and at times questionable quality of such resources can create barriers to their use and wide-spread adoption. Drawing on a variety of examples of ways open resources have been integrated into library services, this session will take a critical look at the benefits and implications they pose from an information literacy perspective. Attendees will learn about a range of quality open resources at their disposal, and best practices in using these resources to benefit faculty-librarian collaboration in the classroom, enhance students’ information, digital and media literacy skills, and foster a spirit of critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong learning at their institutions.

Webinar presented for OA Week at the Nova Scotia Community College on October 24, 2013. Abstract: Questions abound in higher education about both the quality and the sustainability of “open” resources such as open access journals, open education resources, open data, and massive open online courses (MOOCs). Against a backdrop of potential areas of concern, this session will address simple and practical ways to integrate open resources into teaching and learning activities and services. International trends in learning analytics (SAHELA conference)

International trends in learning analytics was presented by Dr. Doug Clow of the Open University UK. The Open University has over 200,000 students, 5,000 tutors, and 1,000 academic staff. It analyzes over 1 billion views and 3 million transactions per day. Learning analytics is defined as measuring, collecting, analyzing, and reporting data about learners and contexts to understand and optimize learning. International activities in learning analytics include conferences, workshops, and publications. Trends from the 2014 Learning Analytics Summer Institute included a focus on privacy, ethics, readiness, technology, research issues, and new contexts like MOOCs.

Engaging Students Through Social Media, Beth McGough, Internet Librarian 2013

Three tools- Twitter | Mahara | Crowdmap

Three tools for communication and learning are discussed: Twitter for microblogging, Moodle/Mahara for online learning content and portfolios, and Crowdmap for crowdsourced mapping. Twitter allows quick updates to 300+ million users, and can publicize events. Moodle is used for online courses while Mahara integrates e-portfolios. Crowdmap enables collecting and sharing geolocated media and information. Mobile technologies now allow on-the-fly data collection and social networking facilitates connecting and mapping that data.

The growing need for an educated workforce, changing student demographics, opportunities presented by new technologies, and increases in the cost of attending post-graduate educational institutions have led many educators, policymakers, and businesspeople to seek more affordable models of educating large numbers of students, such as open textbooks and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). An uncertain job market, expanding opportunities to interact with diverse audiences in online settings, and the potential of online networks to increase citations and impact have also led many academics to engage in open scholarship and make use of such online social networks as Twitter and Academia.edu. Common to both these developments is an increasing advocacy for and engagement with open practices in teaching, learning, and scholarship. In this talk, I will describe a number of emerging online practices and share results from my research into these practices.

This workshop will provide a tour of some of the key locations for finding such resources for k-12 teachers, as well as introducing you to the ideas behind Open Access in general, and a discussion of interesting new directions for lifelong professional development, such as the Peer-to-Peer university. The workshop will consist of introducing you to the terms and resources of Open Access as well as small group discussions on strategies and issues about using these resources in your classroom. This will be an interactive session, where your questions are welcome and will guide the kinds of materials we discuss.
