Putting Cracks in the Paywall: Connecting Librarian Values, Actions, and Technology

A core value of librarianship lies in providing users with equal and immediate access to information. This is frequently not possible, however, particularly when it concerns providing access to academic research literature available through costly journal subscriptions. Drawing on a range of examples, this presentation describes individual and collective actions that librarians have taken to overcome commercial barriers and help to ensure equitable online access to research and scholarship. It also addresses initiatives and services that both academic and public libraries could be implementing and more broadly supporting if unrestricted access to information is truly a goal. Participants will be asked to consider their own perspectives on the open access movement, its intentions and limitations, and how they might support it in their own professional lives.

Abstract: Open Journal Systems (OJS) is open source publishing software that has been adopted by scholarly communities around the world. Typically, it is hosted by academic libraries and used by faculty and graduate students to disseminate research articles independent of proprietary, for-profit journal publishers. Increasingly, however, educators are using this software for assignments and initiatives that give undergraduate students hands on experience with open access publishing of their own digital works and that of their peers. Drawing on a range of examples, this session will highlight ways that librarians can provide technical support, editorial guidance, and media/digital literacy instruction to help create and maintain open access student journals. Participants will also have an opportunity to see the inner workings of OJS while being asked to consider the possibilities and implications of managing an open journal hosting service at their own library, be it public, academic, or special.

Across many parts of our lives we are faced with the increasing availability of data to support decision making. With every element of the research process moving online, there are many new sources of data, as well as improved old sources of data, that can provide information on the performance, value and use of research and researchers.
But there is a problem. The proliferation of proxy data, and their naive equation with such weakly defined concepts as “quality” and “excellence”, have lead to a reliance on rankings and quantitative measures as institutional targets. More than this the adoption of these instrumental targets has lead us away from a critical discussion of institutional values, indeed of what the institution is for.
I will argue that it is only by moving away from such vague terms as “quality”, “excellence” and “impact” and focussing on institutional values and a well articulated mission that institutions of scholarship will continue to be relevant for the future. It is through interrogating the goals of the institution that the enormous potential resource of data on the research enterprise can be realised. Using the data effectively will allow us a window on how knowledge actually moves and is used. In combination with a clear sense of institutional goals this provides great opportunities for institutions to differentiate themselves from the pack.

1) Evidence informed activism uses data and statistics to shape deliberations and actions on social issues. Counting and quantifying things can reveal relationships and normal behaviors.
2) When issues are better understood through data, bureaucracies and decision makers are better able to take informed actions. Several examples were given of using data to inform campaigns and policies around homelessness, transportation, and other issues.
3) Scholar activists are encouraged to conduct research that supports community groups and activists. Data can be assembled in different ways and used to build understanding, but some resist over-classification or feel data is being misused. Open literacy & the problem of access refusal

Abstract: The swift evolution of Open Access (OA) publishing of scholarly works has been driven by researchers and librarians who recognize the societal benefits of these resources being freely available on the Internet. Especially in fields relevant to Science, Technology and Medicine, high quality OA content can benefit people conducting both personal and professional research anywhere in the world. These resources can prove exceptionally valuable to students whose access to scholarly research materials may be limited by costly journal subscriptions both while they are in school and long after they have graduated. This presentation will draw on findings from an exploratory research study that involved a survey sent to academic librarians across Canada questioning the degree to which they are educating students about Open Access research materials and their motivations for and against doing so. Based on participants’ responses, suggested teaching strategies and promotional initiatives will be shared with session attendees. Information literacy teaching methods discussed aim to foster a broader understanding of Open resources and overall scholarly publishing processes among students developing critical and sustainable researching skills.
Lightening students' load: An introduction to open textbooks
Free online textbooks (“open textbooks”) are becoming a reality for a growing number of students in higher education. This session will explore initiatives that are making this possible including the British Columbia Open Textbook Project and the Campus Alberta Open Education Resources Initiative. Participants will be asked to reflect on how open textbooks could benefit their own students both economically and in terms of student learning, while also considering possible drawbacks and implications that these emerging resources pose.

MacEwan librarians look at how micro-interactions, the moments when we delight our users by refining the way we offer services, lead to macro-results. Speakers use their own experience designing a new institutional repository to outline steps to identify, refine, and test micro-interactions with users, and highlight the impact of their strategy on the overall user experience.

Abstract: Publishing opportunities for undergraduate students continue to grow, particularly in university-hosted, student-led open access journals. The MacEwan University Student eJournal (MUSe) is a recent initiative that involves undergraduate students from across disciplines at every level of the publication process, from solicitation of submissions through to blind peer-review, and dissemination. These students are each actively involved with faculty mentors, affording them the opportunity to work alongside experienced academics while gaining insight and knowledge about the ways in which scholarly and creative publications are managed.
Drawing on the experiences of those involved with MUSe, along with related efforts of other undergraduate research publications, this poster describes in detail ways that journal managers can work to ensure meaningful and sustainable faculty engagement in student journals. This includes best practices for recruiting faculty mentors, and effective means of providing necessary support to ensure a worthwhile and engaging experience for faculty and students alike during every stage of the publishing process.

A variety of websites and services that are popular among a growing number of academics will be highlighted and discussed in terms of their benefits and potential applications. Common concerns around copyright and intellectual property will also be addressed, and participants will learn some practical ways to maintain and communicate their rights over works when placing them online.

To celebrate Open Access Week 2013, MacEwan University Library held an Open Access Comedy Film Festival. The event featured daily showings of films that have entered the public domain from the likes of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and The Three Stooges, along with brief introductions to what open access research journals are and where to find them online. The event turned out to be a uniquely fun and successful way to engage the university community with not only the open access movement but related efforts that embrace the free online exchange of ideas and creativity. Learn about how the event came together as well as recommendations the organizer has to offer anyone who is inspired to host a similar event at their own college or university.

CrowdStrike researchers have identified a HijackLoader (aka IDAT Loader) sample that employs sophisticated evasion techniques to enhance the complexity of the threat. HijackLoader, an increasingly popular tool among adversaries for deploying additional payloads and tooling, continues to evolve as its developers experiment and enhance its capabilities.
In their analysis of a recent HijackLoader sample, CrowdStrike researchers discovered new techniques designed to increase the defense evasion capabilities of the loader. The malware developer used a standard process hollowing technique coupled with an additional trigger that was activated by the parent process writing to a pipe. This new approach, called "Interactive Process Hollowing", has the potential to make defense evasion stealthier.
