Emerging Practices in Open Online Learning Environments
In this talk, I describe a number of emerging practices associated with online learning, networked scholarship, and MOOCs. I bring together results from 3 upcoming studies to describe how online learning is an emerging practice, how the field is becoming more interdisciplinary, how learning analytics are becoming more pervasive, and how various experiences and practices (e.g., notetaking and the scheduling of online learning to fit adult life's realities) evade learning analytics methods.

Social media has changed communication and knowledge sharing. It empowers individuals to become digital creators, curators, critics, and collaborators. Social media allows sharing through established platforms like LinkedIn, blogs, tweets, and newer digital mechanisms. Knowledge is now generated through discussions among internet participants, not just scholarly study. Digital technologies provide access to knowledge anywhere, anytime, though there are concerns about information overload. The lecture discusses using social media like LinkedIn, blogs, and Twitter to develop personal learning networks and sharing opportunities to advance scholarly practice in open ways.

The project will provide toolkits and support to help participants establish an online presence using web 2.0 technologies like blogs, social networks and research profiling platforms. It aims to measure the impact of an increased online presence on access to academic networks, industry connections, and research funding opportunities.

Slides from an invited talk given to the The 4th International Conference on E-learning and Distance Education located in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Online journals, online forums, and social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are an integral part of open and digital scholarship, which is often seen as a major breakthrough in radically rethinking the ways in which knowledge is created and shared. In this presentation I situate networked practices in open/digital scholarship and explain what scholars and professors do online, and, why they do the things that the do. In this presentation, I discuss the major tensions and challenges scholars face when engaging networked publics and highlight some uncomfortable realities of being a public scholar. Evangelizing public and networked scholarship without acknowledging the existence of tensions is detrimental to the field and misleading to the scholars who may be considering becoming more networked, more public, and more “digital.” Individual scholars and institutions, both networked and otherwise need to evaluate the purposes and functions of scholarship and take part in devising systems that reflect and safeguard the values of scholarly inquiry.

How to get your institution ready for open access monographs - Ellen Collins ...
How ready is your institution for Open Access (OA) monographs? Although excluded from REF2020, there is no doubt that they will be included in the future, indeed you can already publish an OA monograph now. This session will first provide a brief introduction to the OA monograph landscape – what is happening, who is doing what, what models are being explored. It will then look at how institutions are responding to landscape and based on evidence collected through institutional case studies as part of the OAPEN-UK project, present tips for getting your institution ready for OA monographs.
The OAPEN-UK project, funded by AHRC and Jisc is exploring open access monograph publishing in the humanities and social sciences. The institutional case studies included in-depth interviews with Pro-Vice Chancellors of Research, Directors of Research, Grant administrators, Finance Directors, Librarians and Repository Staff and researchers themselves. The session will be presented by Ellen Collins, Research Officer for OAPEN-UK.

Consuming Linked Data in Universities

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
