Open Folklore is a partnership between the American Folklore Society, Indiana University Bloomington Libraries, and IU Digital Library Program to make folklore studies scholarship widely accessible online for free. It aggregates folklore-related content from various open access sources and repositories using harvesting tools to provide a centralized search portal. The goal is to increase the range and diversity of reliable folklore research resources available to both scholars and communities.

There is a significant online literature and image repository called the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). Content from this repository has inspired a range of users to re-contextualize the BHL data in new, previously unimagined roles including: scientists creating visualizations of species names publishing; citizen scientists blogging about fascinating creatures; designers incorporating marine life into wedding invitations, artists creating collages of animal illustrations and nature photography ; and home decorators adding punch and wit to the walls of their kids bedrooms. Using the example of BHL and its open data principles, the presentation will discuss what open data is and how libraries can expand the impact and reach of their collections through open data methods.

Library futures: converging and diverging directions for public and academic ...
The major influence on library futures is the changing character of their user communities. As patterns of research, learning and personal development change in a network environment so library services need to change. At the same time, libraries are focused on engaging with their communities more strongly - getting into their work and learning flows. This means that libraries are becoming more unlike each other, they are diverging as they meet the specific needs of their communities. Research libraries diverge from academic libraries, and each is different from urban public libraries, and so on.
At the same time, at a broader level libraries are experiencing similar pressures. The need to engage more strongly with their communities. The need to assess what they do. The need to configure space around experiences rather than around collections. Libraries are converging around some of these issues.
This presentation will consider the future of libraries from the point of view of convergence and divergence between types of libraries.
Openness in Teaching, Research, and Publishing

For many libraries, an institutional repository is an online archive to collect, preserve, and make accessible the intellectual output of an institution. For a growing bloc, the goal is to go further, beyond knowledge preservation to knowledge creation. These libraries are using their repositories to provide faculty with a proven publishing option by facilitating the production and distribution of original content often too niche for traditional publishers.
How do metadata librarians sift the incoming metadata with these different goals in mind? How do they optimize content for discovery in a wide range of resources such as online catalogs, external research databases, and major search engines? For a library that is also providing publishing services, what additional steps are necessary?
As the provider of Digital Commons, a repository and publishing platform for over 350 institutions, bepress has first-hand experience with these topics, and our consultants advise regularly on best practices for collecting, publishing, distributing, and archiving content. This presentation is intended for library professionals, whether their goal is to collect previously published works or to go further into library-led publishing. After an overview of common sources and destinations for metadata, attendees will come away with a set of considerations for streamlining workflows and optimizing content for discovery and distribution in major venues.

Libraries are playing a leading role in promoting open educational resources (OER) and open access. Many libraries have created catalogs and guides to curate and provide access to open textbooks and other OER. They are also actively involved in OER initiatives on their campuses to reduce costs for students. The webinar highlighted several examples of libraries that have open textbook catalogs and guides to connect faculty with high-quality OER. It also discussed the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition's (SPARC) efforts to build a librarian network and provide resources to expand librarians' involvement in OER issues.
