Writing Situation
You have learned about three major environmental problems in Latin America:
destruction of the Amazon Rainforest, Oil-related pollution in Venezuela, and air
pollution in Mexico City. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) works to
clean up various environmental problems around the world. They have agreed
to focus all of their attention on the environmental concerns in Latin America,
but unfortunately they only have enough funding to clean up one problem this
year. The EPA will work to improve the environmental concern that is the most
significant.
Directions for Writing
Write a persuasive letter to the EPA that explains the problem that you feel is
the most harmful to Latin America’s environment. Convince the EPA to spend
their time and money solving that environmental concern. First, describe the
problem. Next, explain why the problem is more dangerous is than the other two
problems. Lastly, offer a possible solution that the EPA can use to clean up of
solve the environmental problem.
2. Writing Topic #2
Writing Situation
You have learned about three important figures in Latin America’s
Independence Movement: Toussaint L’Ouverture, Simon Bolivar, and Miguel
Hidalgo. The Latin American Historical Society is going to build a statue to
represent the person who had the greatest impact on Latin American
independence. Unfortunately, they only have enough funding to create one
statue. They will create this special statue for the one leader who contributed the
most to Latin America’s Independence Movement.
Directions for Writing
Write a persuasive letter to the Latin American Historical Society that explains
which person had the greatest impact on the Independence Movement.
Convince the Society’s committee to create a statue for the person that you feel
is the most important. First, you will need to describe the person that you chose
as the most significant. Then, you will explain the person’s role in Latin America’s
Independence Movement. Be sure to include the country(ies) that he fought for
and the country that he fought against. Finally, include why this person deserves
a statue and the other two leaders do not.
