Open Badges have moved from being a niche offering to the mainstream of learning, with major global corporations adopting them for recognition of achievement.
In this session, Bob guided us through some of the ways in which Open Badges can be used in your organisation and how you can join the growing numbers of people awarding and displaying their successes.

Editor's Notes
Good morning my name is Bob Price
I work at Newport City Homes, we are a registered social landlord working in the city of Newport.
I am based in the HR & OD department and specialise in digital learning
Over the past couple of years I have researched, blogged and spoken on the subject of digital accreditation using Open Badges.
Open Badges were covered at Digital 2014 by Digital Me, but a lot has changed in the past year.
The Open Badges standard that has been released around the world is the method, but how they can be used is where my interest lies.
Open Badges say:
"I earned this"
"This is what I did to earn it"
"This who has given me the badge"
Not a claim but hard coded evidence.

This is just a snapshot of some of the organisations who are issuing badges there are many other and include the iLM
Most of these exist outside of the QCF (which may be considered and advantage or a disadvantage).
Within a school there are many ways that badges can be used both for academic and non academic attributes.
As you will know as teachers, it's not just about the levels, there is more to a pupil than that and badges can help recognise the wider picture that makes up a person.
This is actually being done in a number of schools in the UK

The Academy is one of our employability programmes and offers six month paid internships to people who need access to the first step on the ladder. The trainees work in full time roles, we train them and, to help them with their ultimate goal of employment, we issue them with badges to recognise their journey.
As a result from the early weeks, through a range of essential tales and on to the end of the six months, we equip them with evidence to show what they have achieved.
Other organisations are awarding badges for working on volunteer programs, This helps the participants to develop skills that can be demonstrated to potential employers.
These badges are from disaster ready, a free, easy to use online training resource designed to help prepare aid workers for the demands they face in the field.
These badges are awarded by NHS England and are designed to help school children of all ages to understand more about the health service and some of the challenges they offer
This year some large corporations have moved into badge awarding. These are for customers or dealers to help equip them with the skills to use, support or sell specific products. Companies include Adobe, Samsung and IBM.
On top of this badges can be issued for so many other reasons., These include lifelong learning, participation at conferences and participation at one off events.
Learning Pool DLE and Totara both have the ability to issue badges built into the interface. It is important to work out before you issue a badge the criteria
It is important to include in the description all the details on why the badge was issued.
A short and simple e-book is available from Slideshare by following the link displayed.
A second book detailing more about how Open Badges can be applied is currently being written. This will also be on the Slideshare platform once it is completed
It's been quick, but here are my contact details, please feel free to do so if you have any questions.
