Open access journals provide literature that is freely available online without restrictions. This contrasts with the traditional model where libraries and readers must purchase access. There are different open access models - gold OA provides free access on publisher websites, while green OA allows self-archiving in repositories. Author processing charges may be required for gold OA. Over 16,000 open access journals are indexed at the Directory of Open Access Journals. The professor encourages pursuing an open access publishing career and provides additional resources.
