INTRODUCTION
AgencyforNon-conventionalEnergyandRural Technology isanorganisation working under
Governmentof Kerala,Indiaforgatheringdisseminatingknowledge aboutnon-conventional energy,
energy conservation and rural technology .The organisation was established in 1985 with head
quarters at Thiruvananthapuram .The Agency is better known by its acronym ANERT and has
become a synonymforRenewable source of Energy and Energy conservation in the state .ANERT is
guided by a governing body chaired by the minister of Electricity Government of Kerala. This Body
gives direction for activities in various energy –related areas.
ANERT isthe State Nodal Agency (SNA) for the ministry of new and
RenewableEnergy(MNRE) Govt.Of India,to carry out the Centrally Assisted Programmes in Kerala.
ANERT is the State Agency for Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO) and Renewable Energy
certificates for Kerala.

established during 1986 under societies Act by the Government of Kerala, now functioning under
power department with its Head Quarters at Thiruvananthapuram.
Objectives of ANERT
The objectivesof the Agencyistogatherand disseminateuseful knowledgeinvariousfields of Non-
conventional Energy ,Energy conservation and Rural Technology ,conduct studies ,demonstrate
implement and support implementation of schemes and project in these fields and thereby deal
with the problem arising out of the rapid depletion of conventional energy sources ,update the
technologies used in rural areas as well as introduce appropriate new technologies with an aim to
reduce drudgery, increase productionandimprove quality of life.ANERT is guided by an Executive
Committee chairedby the chairman,secretarypowerdepartmentanda Governing Body chaired by
the Minister of Electricity Government of Kerala ,to provide guidelines for ANERT’s activities in
various energy related areas.
ANERT is headed by a Director appointed by the Government.

Achievements
For the past 21 yearsANERT has beencontributingsignificantlytothe developmentandexploitation
of New and Renewable Energy sources of the State. So far ANERT has established a power
generating capacity of 3MW of solar photovoltaic panels which have generated 4.2 Million unit of
electricity , conserved 70.9 Million units conventional electricity through its energy conservation
programme by sparing a generation capacity of 33.2 MW ,supplied solar hot water equivalent to
hot water heated by 32.5 Million units of electricity ,generated 0.85 Million units of electricity
through its biomass gasification and biogas programmes and conserved 0.18 Million tonnes of fire
wood through its improved chulha programmes.
All the activities above significantly contribute on mitigating climate change.
The major programmes being complimented by ANERT are the following,

 Wind Energy Programme
 Bio-energy Programme
 Micro Hydral Programme
 National Programme on Improved Chulha
 Integrated Rural Energy Programme

knowledge in various fields of Non-conventional Energy conservation and Rural Technology :
conduct studies,demonstrate,implement and support implementation of schemes and projects in
thisfieldswithanaimto harness ,new ,renewable and non –polluting sources of energy to replace
the fast depleting conventional energy sources as well as to provide new and appropriate
technological options to the rural areas of the state there by reducing drudgery, increasing
employment opportunity and improving quality of life.
