3. MEANING OF TEXTBOOK
A textbook is a book used for the study of a subject. People use a
textbook to learn facts and methods about a certain subject.
Textbooks sometimes have questions to test the knowledge and
understanding of the learner.
Textbooks help teachers to direct our learners for achieving specific
learning goals. They play a vital role in teaching-learning process.
They provide the basic framework within which much of the
classroom activities occur and also give every child the best
possible opportunities for learning.
A workbook is a type of textbook that has only practice questions
and exercises.
4. DEFINITIONS OF TEXTBOOK
• Oxford English dictionary says: “A book used as a standard work for the study of a particular
subject, a manual of instructions in a subject of study.”
• L. J. Lewis: “Textbook is tool both for the pupil and the teacher.”
• Bacon: “ A book designed for classroom use, carefully prepared by experts in the field and
equipped with the usual teaching devices.”
• Cambridge Dictionary says: “ Textbook is a book that contains detailed information about a
subject for people who are studying that subject.
5. CHARACTERISTICS OF
TEXTBOOKS
• Textbook is a standard book in the subject.
• It is manual instruction.
• It is meant both for the teachers and the students.
• It is a tool for realizing the instructional objectives of the subject.
• Textbook is the foundation on which the course is built up.
• It is a principal source of study material for a given course.
• It is a learning instrument used by students.
• It is a source of knowledge, a guide, an instruction to the pupil.
6. IMPORTANCE OF TEXTBOOKS
• Textbooks are good learning instruments for the students as they can revise
their lessons whenever they want to do so.
• Textbooks are the only tools in the hands of the teachers in Indian situations
with which they are able to run their teaching programme smoothly.
• Textbooks are the chief vehicles for attaining the goals of curriculum.
• Textbooks give concrete form to the curriculum, scope of any topic can be
better know with the help of textbooks.
• Textbooks fills the needs of the students and promote moral values.
7. MEANING OF REFERENCE BOOK
Books which are written so that this can read consecutively for inspiration,
enjoyment or information is called ordinary or general book, than books which
are design to be consulted for specific piece of information is called reference
book.
Broadly speaking any book can be called a reference book provide the
information contained in its so organized so that it become readily accessible.
8. DEFINITION OF REFERENCE
BOOK
• Cambridge English Dictionary: A reference book is a book of facts, such as
dictionary or an encyclopedia, that one can look to discover particular
information.
• According to MERRIAM-WEBSTER Dictionary, a reference book is a book
that intended primarily for consultation rather than for a consecutive
reading.
9. CHARACTERISTICS OF REFERENCE
BOOKS
1. They are intended primarily for occasional consultation.
2. They are consulted for definite items of information.
3. The information included in them is collected from a vast number of sources.
4. It is a miscellany of information and facts.
5. The arrangement of information is such that it can be conveniently and quickly recalled.
6. It follows some methods of arrangement e.g. Alphabetical, Chronological or other methods.
7. They include only the bird-eye-view of the topics and rarely deal them in depth.
8. They usually concentrate on facts.
9. They are normally not issued on loan and kept for use in the library only.
10.Information in a reference book is so organized that anyone can easily get their desired
information.
10. USES OF REFERENCE BOOKS
a) Reference books provide a means for self improvement.
b) They are authentic and reliable sources of information.
c) Reference books are used to supplement knowledge gained in the
classroom and to acquire new knowledge.
d) Authors of reference books will be persons who have made original
contributions and experience in the field.
e) It includes dictionaries, yearbooks, journals, encyclopedia etc.
11. TYPES OF REFERENCE BOOKS
The followings are several types of reference books:
1. Language Dictionary.
2. Encyclopedia.
3. Biographical Sources.
4. Directories.
5. Bibliographies.
6. Audio visual Materials.
7. Year-Books, Almanacs, and Supplements to encyclopedia.
8. Geographical sources, Gazetteers, guide-books, maps, atlases etc.
9. Current sources: Handbooks, manuals and sources of statistics.
