4. INTRODUCTION
A book giving information such as facts on a particular subject
or instructions for operating a machine is called a Handbook. A
handbook is a type of reference work or other collection of
instructions,that is intended to provide ready reference. A handbook is
a treatise on a special subject. Nowadays it is often a simple but all-embracing
treatment containing concise information and being small
enough to be held in the hand. A handbook is sometimes referred to a
vade mecum (Latin-go with me) or pocket reference that is intended to
be carried at all times. It may also be referred to as an enchridion.
Handbook may deal with any topic and are generally compendiums of
information in a particular field or about a particular technique. They
are designed to be easily consulted and provide quick answers in a
certain area.
Handbook is sometimes applied to documents that are produced within
an organization that are not designed for publication-such as company
handbook.

CONTENT
Handbook in schools is intended to help the teachers of social
studies. They are prepared by educationists, experts and teachers
together in workshops conducted by academic bodies. Handbook
provides necessary guidelines for effective instruction of social studies.
Elements of a Handbook
The following are the important elements.
1. The Theoretical Background of the Social studies curriculum and
teaching
A comprehensive view of the major theories and practices related to
social studies curriculum must be illustrated in a handbook. This may
help the teacher for the better understanding of curriculum.
2. Objectives of Each Unit in the Text Book.
6. Curricular objectives must be clearly stated in a handbook. These
objectives can act as a basis for planning instruction. Objective stated
must be clear and specific in terms of cognitive and behavioral
outcomes.
3. Prerequisites for Each Unit in the Text Book.
A good handbook indicates the prerequisite to learn a topic in social
studies. This will help the teacher took provide necessary background
to introduce a topic in the classroom.
4. Content Analysis.
Textual content will be analyzed thoroughly in a handbook. Terms,
facts, principles, processes and laws of a unit must be clearly indicated
in a handbook. In this sense handbook can act as a reference materials
for teachers.
5. Leaning Activities.
Suitable learning activities for each topic in the text book will be
provided on social studies handbook. Hand book also provide solution
for the problems or exercises in the text books.

7. A good hand book clearly suggest the ways to evaluate students
outcome. Handbooks will help the teachers to prepare unit tests and
other practical tests in the classroom.
7. Diagnosis and Remediation.
A handbook should provide opportunity to diagnose the
difficulties of the students. It will help to plan individual difference.
Remedial teaching procedure for backward students is a part of
handbooks.
8. Plan of Work of the Year.
Finally a good handbook will provide a plan of work of the entire
course. This will act as a basis for teachers to plan his daily lesson.

Social Science is a vast and wide subject. A handbook is very
helpful for social science teacher to teach the subject clearly. It helps
the teacher to understand the main objectives of each unit. Handbook
gives guidelines for conducting tests in the classroom. Handbook is an
unavoidable material for teaching social studies. It helps to make the
class more effective. Pupils get clear information.
