INTRODUCTION
A great deal of attention is now being focused on the professional
duties of teacher, especially those duties associates with careful and detested
planning of teaching and learning. Teachers have been preparing and using
work books as a detailed plan of teaching and learning for a long time. A
literature survey, however, suggests that there is very little information on the
effectiveness of workbooks. This paper attempts to full fill this need by
discussing the findings of a research study that looked at the effectiveness of
workbooks in teaching and learning.
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE OF WORKBOOK
According to Kellough and Kellough (1992) the detailed planning for
teaching and learning is carried out for several reasons, but the most important
one is to ensure curriculum coherene. The workbook, in particular, serves as
an agenda for the teachers and a useful record for use in the future when
teaching similar lessons and classes.
Workbooks are practical type of books which help the learners to have
a lot of practice in learning different units of Social studies. These books
contain various exercises etc. for a unit of social studies, there are several
exercises which help the learners to have a lot of practice in learning social
studies.
Workbooks are vital for developing various skills among the students.
Workbooks supply the materials through which the pupils learn by doing. The
lead to the concretization of the concepts presented in the text books. For
example, they contain the pictures of the different scripts of different countries
and the pupils are asked to name them, pupils are asked to locate plares and
events in given requiring application of the knowledge gained in new
situations objective type questions are asked which may be answered with the
help of textbook. They proved opportunists for the pupil to apply what he has
learned. Workbooks help to bring out the creative talents from the pupils and
to improve their skills. Workbook are indispensable.
The exercises given in the workbook should be child-centered and in
accordance with the textbook. These exercises should be helpful to the
students to use their leisure time in a proper way. The workbooks should
encourage self-learning in which students can learn at their own pace.
The students can manage their time efficiently and study more
effectively with the help of workbooks. Work books give scope for guided
study, enable the students to revise the chapters already learnt and test their
progress. To bring out the creative talents in the work book should be child-centered,
and in accordance with the text book. These exercises should be
helpful to the students to use their leisure time in a proper way. They should
inculcate internet among the pupils. The workbooks should encourage self
learning in which students can learn at their own pace.
However, workbooks are not available in varied forms in the market.
To develop the standard of learning social studies, attempts must be made to
publish a variety of work books. Therefore, eminent writers of social studies
should try to produce work book for the benefit of the students.
CONCLUSION
Over the years, the curriculum development unit (CDU) had advocated
numerous changes through the new texts, subjects, teaching and learning
strategies and evaluation approaches. It has, however, made title effort to
improve the quality of teaching and learning. I wish to conclude this report
with four suggestions. This fist relate to pre-service teacher training
programmes. Besides lesson plans and the scheme of work, student-teachers
should be given training in workbook preparation.
