INTRODUCTION
A work book is a modification of text book and it is slowly coming into the
mathematics classroom. A work book should be written by an experienced teacher
with care and foresight. Workbook saves time for the students as they need not
recopy the problems and exercises from the textbook. It eliminates the mistakes due
to the wrong copyright of numbers and digits. The student workbook reinforces and
applies concepts introduced in Derek Haylock’s Mathematics explained for primary
Teachers. With over too tested questions endorsed by primary PGCE trainees, along
with detailed solutions and explanatory notes, the student workbook helps you gain
the confidence you need to understand, apply and teach the primary maths
curriculum. Derek Holyoke is an education consultant and writer with a background
in mathematics teaching, teacher education and classroom-based research in
mathematics education. This book is not available as an inspection copy to more

FUNCTIONS OF WORKBOOK
A good workbook serves the following functions,
 It suggests appropriate activities and exercises in addition to what the rest
book does.
 It saves time for the students as they need not recopy the problems and
exercises from the textbook. It eliminates the mistakes due to the working
copy of numbers and digits.
 It facilities informing in students work and facilitates easy correction of their
work.
 It serves as a supplementary teaching device.
 It provides 0pportunities for pupils to develop computation and problems-
solving skills.
 It provides activities and exercises in addition to the textbook problems and
exercises.
 Slow learners can learn at their own pace
Characteristics of workbook
A workbook has the following characteristics
 It should be written by an expensed teacher of mathematics.
 The author should clearly specify the educational outcomes that the tries to
bring about.
 A valet of well –graded exercises should be provided the each topic.
 Enough a space should be provided in the book has working out the problems.
 The exercises should cater to the individual differences and individual needs.
 It should be accompanied by a list of answers to various graded assignments
or exercises given in the workbook to enable the people to verify their
answers.
 It can be made attractive and appealing by suitable illustration and diagrams.
 Physical features of the book such as cover page, print, papers and ending
should be good.
 It should be reasonably period.
 It should be easily available.
A textbook-cum-workbook, which is of American organ, is gradually replacing the
textbook and work book. It is cheaper and more comprehensive than a separate
textbook and workbook. Since the textbook-cum workbook is authored by the same
person, a better co-ordination and integration of the textbook, namely the scope for
resale and reuse because a work used cannot be reused again.
CONCLUSION
Work book are often used in schools for younger students, either in middle
school or elementary school. They are favored because students can work directly
in their books, eliminating the need for lose leaf and copying questions from a
textbook. In industry, they may be customized integrative manuals which are used to
help provide stricture to an otherwise complex problem work book also hold an
advantage because they are usually smaller and lighter than textbook, which equates
to less trouble when the student brings book home to complete their homework.
The term workbook also used to describe other compilations of questions that
require the reader to complete search-work when dealing with higher- level
mathematics. It can also be used as a training tool for certain job positions.
