Solving Multi-Step Equations Nichole Sides Phone: 205-495-7130 Email: hnsides@crimson.ua.edu
*Essential/unit/content questions Essential Question How can we all work together in a project? Why is math important? What does it mean to be a leader? Unit Question(s) How can we be polite to each other and our customers? What are some types of mathematical operations? How can you have an input as a leader in this bake sale? Content Questions What can we do to respect each other and our customers as we work through our project and during the bake sale? How can we apply Order of Operations to a bake sale? What kind of qualities can you learn from working together and putting on a bake sale for the community?
* Summary of unit I am going to review some steps in order for the students to solve simple multi-step equations. There will be a number of steps for them to review and learn that should not be difficult to manage, and the students should be confident in progressively working through multi-step equations.
*Roles within the classroom Project based learning can change roles of everyone in various ways. Almost any person: student, parents, teachers, community members have the opportunity to become leaders, helpers, teachers, creators, etc. The possibilities are endless. Every person can make a difference in project-based learning. It also demonstrates how versatile and important every person in society is important in life and when working together. The student’s roles are the most important in this lesson. I hope to allow students to learn and develop with themselves as the leaders and helpers. The community can help by attending the bake sale and allowing the students enough time to organize and manipulate an equation to fulfill an order. The teacher’s role in this activity can be to hand out the information, answer questions, and observe how the students handle a situation such as this. Especially since it’s so similar to real life careers and scenarios.

(6) Algebra: draw reasonable conclusions about a situation being modeled.
*Benefits of the unit Objectives for unit The objective of this lesson is to learn basic math skills for solving equations, advance in levels of solving equations, develop patience, teamwork, and be more prepared and confident for the Alabama Graduation Exam. The final product: The student will be able to solve multi-step equations thoroughly and confidently in order to help them with more advanced math problem.
*Explanation of what Project-Based Learning Project-based learning is a learning method that consists of students learning materials by participating in activities and projects. These projects help the students in learning materials and fundamentals with a broad variety of educational results. The lessons and information learned is more of a long-term benefit and more helpful overall for the student. It teaches a lot of self-motivation and curiosity. Some students might benefit from project work, because it can develop a lot more input into the activities and help develop attributes of individuals’ character and knowledge. Various benefits for particular students can be: learning how to work with others, research, plan/organize, time management, creativity, etc. People who might find project work more of a challenge might be the more timid students, busy students, or overachievers. In many cases, such as college settings, it is hard to find a meeting time for students to work on their group projects. This can be overwhelming for those students who have a busy work, family, or athletic schedule. Also, group projects always seem to stress overachievers out, because no matter how many of the members are involved, an overachiever wants to review, organize, and make sure the project is perfect. This can make that one student feel overwhelmed, stressed, and nervous. It might result in more work for particular people than intended.
