Content
Standards
Standard- Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problems. For example, subtract 10 -
8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
Understand and apply properties of operations and relationship between addition and subtraction.
Objectives,
Goals or
Essential
Questions
Objective- Use a part-part-whole model to find the subtraction facts and addition fact in a fact
family.
EQ- Addition and subtraction have an inverse relationship. The inverse relationship between
addition and subtraction can be used to find subtraction facts; every subtraction fact has a related
addition fact.
Prior Learning Students understand that subtraction facts can be simplified by making use of numbers’
relationship to 10. Students are familiar with the part-part-whole model.
Post Learning Students will understand how to use the part-part-whole model to write four related addition and
subtraction facts.

Introduction or
Hook
Remind the students that they have learned how to write a subtraction fact that is related to an
addition fact (yesterdays lesson). Today we will learn how to write all the related addition and
subtraction facts for a whole and two parts.
Talk about some related facts that are written on the board. What do they have in common.
Circle the parts that are the same to highlight the connection.
Activities/
Procedures
We will begin by modeling related facts/fact families on the SmartBoard (utilizing powerpoint) with
an enlarged part-part-whole mat and counters. Students will be encouraged to give answers and
assist the teacher in placing counters on the mat. (If there is time/opportunity, students may
come to the board to help place counters and write fact families.)
After the teacher has modeled a few examples, students will be able to use counters to model on
their own. The teacher will continue to model for the students as they use the part-part-whole
mat and fill in the fact families. As the teacher models, she will point out important aspects of the
fact families. The teacher will read and highlight important information on the visual learning
boxes at the top of the worksheet. After students complete the independent practice on the
worksheet, it will be checked by a teacher before they can continue. If additional practice/
instruction is needed, students will work one-on-one or in a small group with the teacher.
Differentiation There are a couple students in the class who have a poor number concept. They use number
grids when writing numbers and spend more time with the teacher during independent. They
may also work with the teacher after other students have been dismissed.
Learning
Conditions
The students in this class know to raise their hand to speak and not to interrupt others. The
learning environment in this room is supportive and students feel free to take risks. Student
questions/concerns/difficulties are addressed in a respectful way. Sometimes students are
encouraged to call out answers, but do so at the request of the teacher.

Assessment
During the lesson students will be expected to participate and answer questions. The teacher will
circulate while teaching to monitor student work, taking mental/anecdotal notes of which students
are struggling.
Summative
Assessment
Student will complete and independent portion of the worksheet to be reviewed by the teacher
and another section will be complete at home. These sections will be reviewed by the teacher
and retaught/modified if necessary.

Content Operations and Algebraic Thinking (on the job, technical skills)
Delivery Whole class activity, students are encouraged to work on problems independently and ask
questions freely. Students need to feel comfortable with their understanding in order to complete
work at home and avoid frustration.
