The Institut Pasteur has a long history of implementing a One Health approach to address emerging infectious diseases. It has worked jointly with animal and human health sectors on diseases such as rabies, H5N1, and MERS-CoV through activities like field investigations, laboratory training, and vaccine development. While One Health approaches have been adopted in policies, local implementation remains a challenge due to issues like limited resources, sectoral barriers, and communication difficulties. The Institut Pasteur aims to strengthen One Health by expanding multisectoral collaborations during outbreak responses and translating findings into improved public health protocols.

The prevalence of tuberculosis and Rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RMP-TB) among patients showing symptoms of tuberculosis that visited Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, Nigeria was determined from June 2015 to December 2015. A total of 456 patients comprising 218(47.8%) males and 238(52.2%) females were examined using their sputum and gastric lavage samples. GeneXpert System was used to determine the TB and RMF-TB. Results showed that out of the 456 patients, overall tuberculosis prevalence was 88(19.3%), males recorded 48(10.5%) while females had 40(8.8%). The highest tuberculosis prevalence was recorded amongst 21-30 years and 31-40 years age groups (5.5%). Out of the 456 patients, total prevalence for Rifampicin resistance was 11(2.4%). Of these, females and male prevalence was 6(1.3%) and 5(1.1%) respectively. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in prevalence between age and gender. The treatment and follow-up of existing cases is a key to preventing the spread of multi drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Der WWF-Einkaufsratgeber Fische & Meeresfrüchte 2010 / 2011 Unsere Entscheidungshilfe für Ihren Beitrag zum Meeresschutz Fische und andere Meeresfrüchte sind beliebte und gesunde Bestandteile unseres Speiseplans. Dementsprechend groß sind der Konsum und die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung des Wirtschaftszweigs Fischerei. Doch die langjährige Übernutzung der einst so fischreichen Meere hat dazu geführt, dass mittlerweile achtzig Prozent der Fischbestände weltweit von Überfischung bedroht sind. Bedroht sind aber nicht nur die Fischbestände - Haie, Seevögel, Meeresschildkröten, Delfine und Wale, verenden als sogenannter Beifang, der vierzig Prozent des Fangs ausmacht, in den Netzen. Einerseits liegt der Schutz der Fischbestände natürlich in den Händen der Politik, welche die Fangquoten festlegen, doch liegen diese im Durchschnitt 38 Prozent über den Empfehlungen der wissenschaftlichen Experten. Andererseits können Verbraucher über verändertes Verhalten Einfluss auf die Fischereiwirtschaft nehmen, denn auch für diese gilt: Die Nachfrage regelt das Angebot. Doch da Sie als Verbraucher diese Information in der Regel nicht erhalten, finden sie hier eine für Verbraucher taugliche Version des Einkaufsratgebers, mit welcher Sie Ihr Konsumverhalten bewusst anpassen und so aktiv zum Meeresschutz beitragen können.

Globaler Raubbau immer dramatischer „WWF Living Planet Report 2008“: Bis zum Jahr 2035 zwei volle Planeten Erde nötig © WWF Der Raubbau an der Erde nimmt immer dramatischere Formen an und ist so groß wie nie zuvor. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt der neueste „Living Planet Report 2008“ des WWF, der heute in Berlin vorgestellt wurde. Wenn der Verbrauch an natürlichen Ressourcen weitergeht wie bisher, würden bis zum Jahr 2035 zwei volle Planeten benötigt, um den Bedarf an Nahrung, Energie und Fläche zu decken. Das ist im Vergleich zum letzten Report eine Beschleunigung um 15 Jahre. Der WWF Report wird alle zwei Jahre veröffentlicht und stellt eine Art „Herz- und Nieren-Check“ des Planeten dar. Er ist eine der international bedeutendsten Studien über den allgemeinen Zustand der Erde.

WWF Deutschland - fakten: Sicher, klimaschonend, bezahlbar – Ein Energiekonzept für Deutschland WWF-Energiekonzept – 10 Eckpfeiler für eine CO2-freie Zukunft: 1. Ziele zur Treibhausgasreduktion festlegen Um die globale Temperaturerwärmung unter 2° C halten zu können, müssen die glo- balen Emissionen bis 2050 um 80 Prozent sinken. Für Industrieländer bedeutet dies eine Reduktion aller Treibhausgase bis 2020 um mindestens 40 Prozent, bis 2030 um 60, bis 2040 um 80 und bis 2050 um 95 Prozent gegenüber 1990. 2. Ambitionierte Ziele zur Steigerung der Energieeffizienz Für alle Sektoren ist eine massive Ausweitung der Energieeffizienz notwendig. Für jeden Sektor muss ein Energieeffizienz-Ziel transparent formuliert werden. 3. Ausbauziele für erneuerbare Energien in allen Sektoren Nur mit klaren Ausbauzielen für alle erneuerbaren Energien kann der Umbau der Energiewirtschaft gelingen. Bis 2050 sollen die Stromversorgung und der Verkehrs- sektor vollständig auf erneuerbare Energien umgestellt sein. 4. Keine Laufzeitverlängerung für Kernkraftwerke Die Laufzeitverlängerung der bestehenden Kernkraftwerke blockiert den benötigten Umbau der Energiewirtschaft und den Wettbewerb. Das Energiekonzept muss mindestens ein Szenario mit Zielerreichung ohne Laufzeitverlängerung enthalten. 5. Robuste Annahmen bei den Energiepreisen Unrealistisch niedrige Annahmen bei den Energiepreisen führen dazu, dass die Kosten für Klimaschutz überschätzt und die Erträge für die Volkswirtschaft unterschätzt werden. Die Energiepreise sollten sich an den aktuellsten Prognosen orientieren. 6. Bewusstes Ressourcenmanagement Die Notwendigkeit eines sorgfältigen Umgangs mit knappen Ressourcen wie mit Biomasse und mit CO2-Lagerstätten für die unterschiedlichen Anwendungsfelder muss ausreichend berücksichtigt und reflektiert werden. 7. Identifikation der Umbaumaßnahmen der benötigten Infrastruktur Das Energiekonzept muss klar ausweisen, welche Umbaumaßnahmen an der heu- tigen Energieinfrastruktur durchgeführt werden müssen, um Versorgungssicherheit und Klimaschutz zu gewährleisten. 8. Klare Aussagen zur zeitlichen Einordnung der verschiedenen Umbaumaßnahmen Für Bereiche mit hoher Kapitalbindung, langer Lebensdauer bzw. langen Vorlaufzei- ten müssen Zeitfenster identifiziert und bei der Investition berücksichtigt werden. 9. Identifikation der Innovationserfordernisse Das Energiekonzept muss Schlüsselinnovationen in den verschiedenen Sektoren identifizieren und für diese klare „Roadmaps“ aufzeigen. 10. Gesamtwirtschaftliche Bewertung Die industriepolitischen Vorteile einer frühzeitigen und ambitionierten Klimaschutz- politik müssen für die gesamtwirtschaftliche Bewertung berücksichtigt werden.

Starker Panda in Zeiten der Krise WWF freut sich über mehr als fünf Prozent Zuwachs bei Unterstützern Der WWF Deutschland findet immer mehr Freunde. 2009 legte die Zahl der Förderer um knapp sechs Prozent zu und stieg auf 378.000 Unterstützer. Sie trugen mit ihren Spenden 58 Prozent und damit den Löwenanteil zu den Einnahmen der Umweltstiftung bei. Dem heute in Berlin vorgestellten Jahresbericht zufolge lagen die Erlöse des WWF im vergangenen Jahr bei 41,8 Millionen Euro. „Die wachsende Unterstützung für den WWF als Anwalt der Natur zeigt, dass den Menschen der Schutz der Umwelt gerade in wirtschaftlich unsicheren Zeiten ein wichtiges Anliegen ist“, freut sich WWF-Vorstand Eberhard Brandes.

There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities. In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions. Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved. Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

Overall life span (LS) was 1671.7±1721.6 days and cumulative 5YS reached 62.4%, 10 years – 50.4%, 20 years – 44.6%. 94 LCP lived more than 5 years without cancer (LS=2958.6±1723.6 days), 22 – more than 10 years (LS=5571±1841.8 days). 67 LCP died because of LC (LS=471.9±344 days). AT significantly improved 5YS (68% vs. 53.7%) (P=0.028 by log-rank test). Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).
