This document summarizes an experimental photography project focused on portraying fear. The student created 4 images exploring themes of paranoia and movement. For the first image, they used multiple exposure to combine images showing a subject's fearful reaction to a disfigured figure behind them. They analyzed the technical and aesthetic qualities of their work, noting aspects they succeeded and could improve on. Overall, they felt they achieved their goal of creating unsettling images open to interpretation, but could have further developed some ideas.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Experiment 1: Movement: Paranoia
Always Watching
The Field
The Fear of Running Away
Don’t Look Behind You
3. Annotation
The image matches the
theme of fear
The image also incorporates
multiple exposure as it’s
actually 4 separate images
creating this final one.
This image clearly shows
paranoia which is what I planned
to portray in my images – it could
also show schizophrenia which I
feel the image also shows signs
of.
The main experiment is ‘movement’
I have clearly shown this through the
second subject.
The black and white
really makes it seem a
lot creepier/scary
Changing the levels
and curves allowed
me to make certain
aspects and shadows
stick out
Blurring also came in handy when
dealing with this image, because
there was so much foliage around
the subjects it all came out really
focused, mostly my fault as I could
have changed the aperture Due to it being a particularly bright day, I wasn’t
able to change aperture or shutter settings and I
had to rely on manual change because I couldn’t
get a dark shot, which is what I wanted
This subject wasn’t even
featured in the original
photograph, she was
edited in to this one
Subject 2 had to
maniacally move
around to capture
the movement
effect
Dodging and burning came in
quite handy when it came to
editing this photograph
Darkening areas such as
the eyes, lighting the
pupils although its still
hard to differentiate
between the iris and the
rest of the eye.
The lasso tool came in handy
during the post production
process, I had to sharpen the
image of the second subject a
few times.

Evaluation:
How well do you feel you have realised your ideas and intentions and what results have
you got?
I think I have realised my ideas and intentions well, I have taken the theme of fear and thought of many
different ways to interpret it for example I used: disfigurement, darkness and being alone – every idea I
wrote down seemed to relate to paranoia and that’s how I came up with my final images. I knew
straight away how I wanted my images to look and what I was going to do for them which made the
planning process easier, I knew I wanted dark images that would potentially shock the viewer or cause
them mild discomfort when looking at the piece. I also got a lot of influence from a photographer,
Dominic Rouse – instead of using multiple exposure in the way that he did, I used movement although I
tried to get the same effect he had on his viewers which was to shock, confuse and make them feel
uncomfortable whilst at the same time telling a story – I think I have managed to do this, I feel I have
managed to create a story through this photography, I have left the image enough so that the viewer
can have a series of interpretations, personally I see paranoia and possibly schizophrenia which both
induce a type of fear. The mood boards I created also helped me during the planning process, it enabled
me to look at other peoples work, not just artists or photographers but other students and it helped me
create darker images and interesting new ideas and it gave me a sort of goal to reach in terms of
aesthetic quality and I feel I have achieved that.
Qualities:
What are the strongest and weakest elements from an aesthetic point of view?
I think the style I have used is quite unique, the way that the subject is looking, the setting, the subject
in general – it’s all very simple but its also different compared to other interpretations of fear in the
sense that it shows the other subject – the one inducing fear, not showing it – from the other images I
have looked at its usually the main subject looking at the source of the fear but not seeing the subject
that actually creates the fear. I like how dark the image is, I like how I have made darker parts of the
image including the shadows, to stand out more than the light – I also like how when you first look at
the image its almost impossible to focus on one thing as opposed to looking at the picture as a whole. I
think the strongest points are: the small details in the photograph that are accentuated such as the
veins in the eye of the first subject, the movement I have incorporated in to the image and the setting. I
think the weakest points are: the amount of detail in the background, how in focus one of the second
subjects is compared to the other 2 and the fact that not every detail is covered, such as the first
subjects hair.

Evaluation:
Consider the technical qualities of your work?
I think I have effectively managed to make my final images look as professional and unique as possible, I have used a
range of techniques to ensure that the photographs come out looking sharp and in focus in all the right places – I have
effectively used aperture in the majority of my final images to keep the main subject in focus and blur the rest of the
image, although sometimes I had to manually change this, I have also managed to effectively control the shutter speed
enough so that when an object or subject is in motion it captures it, I most commonly used 1/5 for this, also I have
been able to correctly add layers to the image, cut out what I need, dispose of the rest and change the opacity of the
layer so that it showed the image behind it – for example: the first subject is a completely separate image, I have cut
her out of it and put her on to another image – I have then used two more images, cut out the movement within them
and added them on top of the first image creating the movement effect. Not only that but I have managed to
effectively use the dodge, burn, blur and sharpen tools along with: levels, curves and black and white.
I think I could have improved on certain aspects, I think I should have taken more photographs of the second subject in
motion especially within the face area to show disfigurement and induce more fear from the viewer. I also was not able
to add the effect of the first subject looking at the camera and then swiftly moving her eye to the side which is what I
originally wanted, it ended up making it look like she had an animal shaped pupil which was not the desired effect – I
think I could have darkened her face more too, maybe exaggerate features and shadows in certain areas, although she
is supposed to be seen as light and not dark. Due to the weather being so bright, I had to find more shaded area
although is still shows through quite a bit more light than I originally anticipated it would – this meant I had
implications when it came to aperture and shutter speed – if I changed the settings manually or using auto it would
make the photograph look extremely bright and not have my desired effect of darkness.
6. 6
How could you improve your work?
I think in terms of improving my work, I could have changed a few aspects. I don’t think I was
as creative with this work as I have been in the past, I’d like to re think some of my ideas and
try to come up with something more interesting, maybe use different subjects instead of the
same two each time as well. I’d also like to take the photographs in a darker area or on a
darker day – the fact that there was sunny weather made it quite hard to get the settings that
I needed to make the photographs look dark and fear inducing, it also meant I had to put in
settings that I didn’t require which made capturing movement harder than it should had been.
I think I’d also like to try a different technique, I quite liked the idea of close to subject and I
think I could get a really scary effect for some of the ideas I had with that particular technique.
I think if I put enough effort in, I could definitely develop my final products with additional
work, id re-take the photographs and test out a different technique such as: Close to subject
or out of focus to see if I get a better outcome with that instead. My other ideas included
dismemberment, with close to subject that would have been easier and given me a better
effect, I think if I was going to do this project again, I’d use that instead of movement.
Consider formal elements
In my second, third and fourth images there are lines that appear to point towards the
subjects, in the second photograph, it’s the lines of corn in the field that surround the second
subject and appear behind the first, in the third photograph, there are the lines on the
benches and the slabs of cement behind the main subject that seem to point towards them
and finally in the fourth image there are lines on the pavement and the slabs of cement
behind the subjects that run alongside them, other than that there are no lines that are
supposed to represent symbolism, there is however a sort of leading line, it starts with the
object closest to the camera and then goes to the second subject in each photograph. There
are a lot of shapes in the photographs, the shape of the foliage behind the subjects in the first
photograph, the tree line and field in the background of the second photograph, the plants,
the bench and the movement around the subject in the third photograph and the same with
the fourth image and of course the subjects themselves, these are also patterns (the field,
foliage, tree’s and so on) each of my photographs are in black and white and they’re quite dark
which was my desired effect. Again I could have developed this by taking the image on a
darker day or in a darker area to enhance this and get the right camera settings.
7. 7
Consider if the images you have produced fulfil the brief you were set.
I think the images I have created do fulfil the project brief, I’ve created four photographs that follow the theme
of Fear, I have done this by using paranoia to put my point across and I have definitely used experimental
photography to do this, for example:
My first photograph, entitled: ‘Don’t Look Behind you’ is an image of a subject looking disgruntled and fearful
of the second subject behind her who is hidden amongst the dark foliage, I have used movement to show the
second subject looking disfigured and even more terrifying than the form of the subject themselves. I have also
in a way used multiple exposure to create this final effect, I did this by using parts of several different
photographs and incorporating them all in to this one image – for example, the first subject isn’t even in the
original photograph of the second subject just stood by themselves amongst the foliage, neither was the
movement, they were all cut out of other images and put in to this one – thus proving it fits the brief by
conforming to the theme of fear and being experimental.
My second photograph, entitled: ‘The Field’ is an image of the same two subjects in the first photograph in the
same position just in a different setting – the fact that the field is so desolate and quiet, the second subject is a
terrifying mythical sort of creature and the first subject has a ghostly effect shows that I have incorporated the
theme of fear in to this image. I have used movement with the second subject by again making them look
distorted and blurry, which induces fear itself. I have also used multiple exposure again to put objects and
subjects in to the final image which was not present in the photographs before – such as the ghostly girl. I have
also used a filter to make the whole image to have a grain like texture which adds to the fear. This shows I have
been experimental, as I have been with my other two final photographs.

10. Evaluate:
How well do you feel you have realised your ideas and intentions and what results have you got?
I think I have realised my ideas and intentions well, I have managed to create a set of photographs that represent
fear, my first image represents fear as a whole, I’ve used a model to show the embodiment of fear – however, I
also created this photograph for viewers to interpret for themselves and decide on what it means, the second
image is entitled: ‘the fear of falling apart’ – I have used movement to create a terrifying face with limited
features, the only ones that can be made out is the eye sockets and the outline of the lips, I have used a
relatively new technique with this image, it differs from the first experiment as there isn’t a use of multiple
exposure in this, however, it’s along the same method I used when capturing: ‘always watching’ from experiment
1. the third image is entitled: ‘being alone’ and it’s a creepy monochrome photograph of a blurred figure walking
down a hall, this is to emphasise being alone – the title helps enhance this fact and the fourth image is entitled:
‘Consuming Food in Public’ this is supposed to represent paranoia of people watching you in public during the
consumption of food – I got the idea as it’s a personal problem of mine. I got my influences from the mood
boards I created and also from my mother – they both gave me a few ideas that I put together to create these
end products, for example, my mother gave me different ideas of paranoia, for example: paranoia of wearing a
particular thing in public, fear of spiders, paranoia of being alone, as we can see I have utilised some of these
ideas and used them to create these photographs, there was no particular influence from photographers this
time .
10
11. 11
Evaluate:
Consider the aesthetic qualities of your work.
I like how with these images I haven’t had to use a lot of different images in one, the use of movement has made
it easier to capture a creepy photograph without actually putting too much effort in to it. I like how these images
are lighter than the first experiment however, they have deeper meanings and by that logic are actually darker
than the first set, I think I’ve made these images unique as well, I’ve used different settings and styles to get the
right kind of end product, for example, in image 4 ‘being alone’ I have used a long, dark corridor which makes it
look like the subject is in a hospital of sorts or just somewhere where people often feel alone or where there is an
array of emotions present. I like how with image 1, I have made the background as dark as possible and have
managed to enhance the lighter areas, I also like how the movement has been shown, it looks rather aesthetically
pleasing. I dislike how bright the light is on the wall, I tried to tone it down but after a while it made the image
look worse so I ended up leaving it. I like with how image 2, there is a distinct face with blurred features – I like
the eeriness about it, I dislike the background I’d of liked to make it less detailed or capture the image in a scarier
place. I like how in image 3 ‘Being Alone’, it’s very light yet it’s very dark, I think its very aesthetically pleasing and
it puts the point across effectively, I dislike how little visual information there is here, I think it would have been
better if I took it in a different location. I like how in the last image, the subject that is showing movement
represents the paranoid person – it shows discomfort and being afraid which is what these people feel like when
this happens, whilst the other subject is looking at them in quite a sceptical way which is again, what the
paranoid person feels they are thinking. I dislike how this point is put across, I think I could have done better had I
properly thought it through.
12. 12
Evaluate:
Consider the technical qualities of your work?
I think my final photographs are very well done, they put across a point and are clear examples of fear, however hard I tried, some of
them don’t seem to really fit in to the paranoia category. I think in my first image, ‘the chase’ my strongest element would be the
actual movement within the photograph, it distorted the face of my subject perfectly to make them look menacing and terrifying,
the weakest point is the amount of light in the image, however I can utilise this as a symbolism of darkness coming in to the light. I
used a limited amount of post production on this image, changing it to black and white, changing the levels and the curves but what
was most important was the actual taking of the photograph, I used Shutter Priority to enhance the capture of movement, I put the
setting on to 1/5 to make sure the shutter quickly exposed at the right time, creating the rather aesthetically pleasing, and frankly,
quite chilling end product that is, ‘the chase’.
The second images strongest point is the amount of shadows within the photograph to make the face appear instead of it just being
a blur, the weakest point is the background, I don’t like how focused it is and I tried to tone this down with the blur tool with slight
success. Again, like with photograph 1 the main thing here was the movement and very little post production actually went in to
creating the final image apart from the black and white filter, changing the curves and levels and adjusting the brightness of the
overall photograph, again I used 1/5 to capture the movement.
The third images strongest point is: the monochrome used during post production, it highlights the main area and without it, the
viewer wouldn’t be able to see the main subject. The weakest element of the photograph is where I actually took the photograph,
every surface had a shine to it and therefore the light reflected off everything which was not the intended end result I wanted. I had
to heavily use post production on this image to get it to this final stage, I changed the brightness, added a black and white filter,
changed the levels and curves, used the blur and sharpen tool in certain areas to highlight the main subject, use dodge and burn to
make some areas appear darker and the others appear lighter and finally, I added noise to make the image have a grainy look that
gives it that overall fear factor, I used 1/5 for this photograph too.
The last images strongest element is: the post production I have added to it, the black and white filter, along with a change in curves
has really made certain features stand out – the scared look on the Left subjects face and the actual blur of the Right subject. The
weakest element is the actual point I’m trying to put across, I think I could have tried harder to make it obvious this is to do with
anxiety and eating disorders rather than a slightly humorous facial expression and a bunch of movement. I didn’t have to do much
post production with this image, I put on the black and white filter as all of my photographs are in monochrome, I changed the levels
and curves and highlighted some areas by dodging them – the rest was captured by the camera on shutter priority, setting 1/5.
13. 13
How could you improve your work?
Evaluate:
I don’t think there are that many ways I could have improved my work, I’m pretty happy with my end results, but
alas, I think if I had more time or maybe a different idea of fear, I could have come up with some better, more
interesting ideas – I don’t think I have used my full potential with these ideas as I am quite an expressive and
creative student when it comes to these type of topics. I also think I could have taken these images on a darker
day, the background is very light especially where the sun is casted in to it, it makes it very hard to highlight
shadows when there is hardly any.
I also think I could have changed my technique, I only used monochrome or a black and white filter to finish
these photographs during post production and although they look like a set, I’m not sure if a viewer would find
them boring, I think they’re okay, personally.
Consider Formal Elements
There are definitely a lot of lines pointing towards the main subjects in this set of photographs, they’re either on
the roof of a certain location or on the floor, the only two photographs that don’t have any significant leading
lines pointing towards the subject is the second and very last photograph of the set. There are a lot of shapes
within the photographs, the subjects, the backgrounds with the trees and the cemetery and hall settings, there
are also props such as the food in the last photograph. All of my photographs are very dark, which is how I
intended them to be, the shadows have been highlighted and the bright parts of the images have been toned
down to make the photographs even darker.
14. 14
Consider if the images you have produced fulfil the brief you were set?
I have definitely followed the brief and fulfilled the instructions, all of these images represent fear, which
matches my overall theme and has continued to do so during every set of images I have produced, for example:
‘the fear of falling apart’ clearly shows an idea of fear, rather than someone being scared, this gave me the
option to expand and experiment ways of representing fear and it definitely follows the theme, as does the rest
of my images.
They are also definitely one hundred percent experimental as they clearly show the use of movement, for
example: ‘the chase’ which clearly shows I’ve captured movement as the subject of the image has changed
position which gave me this final effect. This also shows I’ve followed the theme because it’s showing another
representation of fear for the viewer to interpret for themselves, I wanted my photographs to have a story like
effect on the viewer in the sense that when they look at it, they come up with their own interpretation of which
type of fear they think it is or if it’s even fear at all, although I’m positive it clearly shows it.
The photograph, ‘Being Alone’ represents the fear (matches the theme) of being alone, the subject is walking
down a long, dark, empty corridor to represent how alone she is, the use of black and white is used to emphasise
both the fear and the lack of colour in this situation, the lack of happiness. I’ve used movement to capture this
image and I’ve used post production techniques I have learnt during this topic to create the final effect.
The very last photograph, ‘Consuming food in public’ shows it’s experimental at first glance as one of the
subjects shows definite movement, this was supposed to represent that they are the person who finds it hard, a
fear, to eat in public (a personal problem of a few people I know) this almost matches the theme as I’m trying to
show it’s a fear, however, I think I could have tried a little harder to get the point across. Either way, I’ve followed
the brief.
16. Annotation
I used multiple layers to
create this final image
I took 2 photographs, one where
I’m looking in the mirror, one
looking away from the mirror, I
then combined the layers and
changed the opacity of the
image on top
I used the pen tool to outline
the Left eye of the reflection
and used ‘fill’ to create this
black eye effect.
I took the photograph in a
secure looking location, this is
to emphasise that fear can
creep up on you wherever you
are
Matches theme of fear, clearly
showing that the subject is scared
Clearly shows movement,
matches the brief
Didn’t take a lot of post
production, levels, curves, using a
blending option (colour dodge),
changing opacity, adding layers,
using the fill effect and pen tool.
I kept it in colour this time to
show that I can create fear
using both black and white and
colour
To show variation in my
photography and post
production style
I wanted the reflection to be the
main source of fear, having the
‘demonic’ eyes and staring at the
subject when if it was a normal
reflection would be looking also be
looking away
I wanted my colours to be quite vivid
so that it was eye catching and
interesting to the viewer
17. 17
Evaluate
I definitely feel I have realised my ideas, intentions and created very good results. Admittedly I was very short on ideas,
however, I think I’ve managed to pull through. The first image, ‘A Ghost Amidst Others’ is supposed to seem like a candid
photograph of a friend with an abnormality sticking out, I think I have achieved this, the photograph does look very candid
in the way that the subject is turning round and smiling, I’ve definitely captured the abnormality with the use of movement,
it looks as if there is another face right next to the subjects. This is exactly what I was aiming for and I managed to capture
it. I didn’t really have much of an influence for this image, I’d like to say it was from pictures I have seen around the internet,
scary photographs that people have taken for whatever reason that has shown up something along the lines of a ghostly
apparition and created fear.
The second image ‘The Face’ is supposed to create an uneasy feeling from the viewer, I think I have definitely managed this
– it’s supposed to create fear by being an image that’s quite hard to understand, it’s also got very similar pos production
techniques to ‘The Fear of Falling Apart’ from Experiment 2, I really enjoyed the style I created with that and I wanted to try
create it again, however, I think this time it’s easier to make out parts of the model whereas in ‘the fear of falling apart’ it’s
quite hard, I also managed to make it look like there is two different personalities almost, one is colour, one is black and
white – there appears to be 2 faces.
The third image, ‘Fear of the Dark’ is exactly what it sounds like, it’s an image of a long, dark corridor with a figure at the
end, this induces fear from many people in the first instance, I took that further by darkening the shadows and making the
‘safe, lighter area’ look less inviting with the figure. I got the idea from a movie, they pan round the corner and the corridor
with safety at the end seems to get longer and further away, I wanted the same sort of effect with this photograph and I
think I have definitely achieved it.
18. 18
Evaluate
The fourth image, ‘The Reflection’ is the quite cliche image of someone
looking away from the mirror and the reflection staying still as if it’s
another entity altogether. Reflections have been widely used when
inducing fear from audiences for a very long time, my influence for this
photograph came from a google search I performed during the planning of
this topic, it also came from an old viral video I remember viewing at a
young age of a girl looking away from the mirror and a horrific image
staying behind. I think I have managed to re-create it quite well and it sure
does freak me out so I hope it does the same to viewers.
The final image, is quite abstract and interesting, I didn’t actually have any
influences for it, the idea came to me whilst I was taking another
photograph but it ended up being a better outcome than I expected. The
movement really made it easier to create this effect, I like how abstract
and interesting it looks, you can’t make out what anything is and I like
that. I used a variety of post production techniques to create this final
effect – I used levels, curves and a warm filter to create the red, danger
vibe. If I was to compare it to previous work, I’d like to say I’ve vastly
improved when it comes to coming up with ideas and using the post
production techniques to my own advantage.

Qualities:
Consider the aesthetic qualities
A Ghost Amidst others: I don’t particularly enjoy how this looks, I tried to add noise to the photograph to add to the
candid effect but I think it just ended up making it look messy. I don’t think it looks overly professional either, it’s
probably the weakest image I have in this experiment. I think the strongest elements are: the actual movement
caught, the black and white filter and how the subject is captured. The weakest points are: The lights, I don’t like
how they look with this effect, the noise that I previously mentioned and how I didn’t do a very good job of
blending the subject against the background she kind of just fits in when I want her to stand out.
The Face: I really enjoy how this photograph turned out, I didn’t think I was going to get much from it considering
there was so much movement and not a lot of features. I like how it blends from bright colours to black and white,
which was actually unintentional, it makes it look like there is multiple personalities and more than one subject
within the photograph. The strongest points are: the movement caught within the photograph itself, the post
production techniques I used to create the black and white effect and the features I’ve managed to capture. The
weakest points are: the eyes, I don’t like how dark they are and how it’s a little bit hard to differentiate between
features.
Fear of the Dark: I think this image has a fear vibe all of it’s own at first glance, especially the darkness leading up to
light. I like how I’ve effectively used the long corridor to create the fear that I’m trying to put across to the viewer. I
think the strongest points of this photograph are: how I’ve managed to distort the subject at the end of the hallway
to create the fear effect, the way I’ve made it go from dark to light which creates the illusion that it’s safe when it
isn’t and I also like the shapes I’ve used in it, how everything is quite square but it looks like the hallway is longer
and the walls seem to bend towards the middle. The weakest points are: I don’t like how it’s in black and white, it
makes certain things stand out but after a while it got a bit repetitive with using the same filter all the time.

Qualities:
Consider the aesthetic qualities
The Reflection: I think this image looks both amateur and professional, which is quite the contrast. It looks amateur
because of how poorly I’ve put the layer together, but it also looks quite professional because I’ve incorporated
effects in to it to make it look quite terrifying and in a way I think the amateur aspect makes it look better. I think
the strongest points are: The way I’ve managed to get both layers in tact but have it so one shows through more
than the other in the right areas, the way I’ve kept the colour to show a variation in my abilities and the colours I
have used, emphasising the red to show danger. The weakest points are probably the post production, I like the way
I’ve managed to make one eye all black but I think that would be one of the more amateur parts of my creation and
I don’t like how you can still see both layers.
On the Inside: I like how abstract this image is, I think it looks quite professional. There’s nothing really much to say
about how it looks, I just think it’s quite interesting and unique especially in comparison to my other experiments.
The strongest points are: the use of colour, how I’ve made it look like fire, especially down the leg of the subject. I
think the weakest point about this photograph is probably the setting it’s in, I think it might have been better in a
long corridor setting rather than a random stair well.
Consider the technical qualities
With the images: A ghost amidst others, the face and fear of the dark I used the exact same techniques for each. I
desaturated each photograph to create the black and white filter, I then used levels to deepen shadows and dark
areas and make other areas such as: the movement/other face in ‘a ghost amidst others’ stand out. I used curves to
also have the same sort of effect, I especially used it in The Face to darken the other areas so that the features
stood out more against the dark.
There was only the other two images, On the Inside and The Reflection where I used different post production
techniques to create a genuine effect, I used the pen tool on the eye of the reflection to create the demon eye
effect and I used the smudge tool on fear of the dark to distort the subject and I also used a distortion filter to make
the walls look like they were bending towards the middle in the image: Fear of the dark.

How could you improve your work?
I’m not trying to toot my own horn, but I believe over the course of the experiments I’ve managed to near
enough perfect my work and create exactly how I saw it in my minds eye, the only image I would change would
be A Ghost Amidst others because I don’t feel it’s quite professional enough, other than that, I think I’ve done
very well this time around compared to the other experiments.
If I was going to do this project again, I might choose a different theme to test myself rather than going for what I
found easiest to come up with ideas for.
Consider formal elements
I feel I have already covered this throughout my evaluation, in a ghost amidst others there are lines pointing
directly to the subject which is the main point of focus, in ‘On the Inside’ there are shapes that are quite
significant, for example the shape of the subject as opposed to the rest of the setting which has no other shapes
around it, there are lines across the bottom but they are not there to mean anything, there are a lot of lines
included in ‘The Face’ which don’t really have any significance or symbolic meaning, they are just there to add to
the effect of movement, the shapes in this photograph are mainly the contorted features of the subject, in the
reflection there are lines on the wall behind the subject that point towards the mirror, this wasn’t intentional but
it does add to the main effect, if you follow them you will be looking directly at the reflection which is the main
focus and finally in, ‘Scared of the Dark’ the lines point directly towards the main point of focus which is the
contorted figure at the end of the corridor.

Do the images you have produced fulfil the brief?
All of my photographs match the theme of fear, A Ghost Amidst others has the unknown entity fear factor with the
ghost like face beside the main subjects, On the Inside shows fear in a very vivid and almost hard to read way, I’ve
tried to create an embodiment of fear which I think I’ve gotten across using the almost flame like style to it. Scared
of the Dark also has a fear factor with the long hallway, distorted walls and the figure at the end. The face also
shows another embodiment of fear with it’s unusual look and it’s distorted shapes and finally, The Reflection which
shows what I believe to be a common fear about someone standing behind you which I think I’ve definitely
managed to portray.
They also all match the brief in that they are all experimental, each one of my photographs shows movement,
whether that's done with the camera itself or using motion blur in Photoshop during post production, which was
used on ‘The Reflection’.
