Editor's Notes

  1. Organizational Health (as defined by Hoy, 2005-2009) is determined by the balance of the institutional, administrative, and teacher levels of an individual school.
  2. The results from the OHI are calculated by using norm-referenced values (the normative data is from a diverse group of Elementary schools in New Jersey).
  3. Institutional Integrity is the degree to which the school can cope with its environment in a way that maintains the integrity of its programs. Teachers are protected from unreasonable community and parental demands. Collegial Leadership is principal behavior that is friendly, supportive, open, and guided by norms of equality. But, at the same time, the principal sets the tone for high performance by letting people know what is expected of them. Principal Influence is the principal’s ability to influence the actions of superiors. Influential principals are persuasive with superiors, get additional consideration, and proceed relatively unimpeded by the hierarchy. Resource Support is the extent to which classroom supplies and instructional materials are readily available; in fact, even extra materials are supplied if requested. Teacher Affiliation is a sense of friendliness and strong affiliation with the school. Teachers feel good about each other, their job, and their students. They are committed to both their students and their colleagues and accomplish their jobs with enthusiasm. Academic Emphasis is the extent to which the school is driven by a quest for academic excellence. High but achievable academic goals are set for students; the learning environment is orderly and serious; teachers believe in their students’ ability to achieve; students work hard and respect those who do well academically.

  6. Sds are the Standardized scores (standardized against the normative data from NJ). Very similar to SAT/GRE scores… Institutional Integrity &amp; Academic Emphasis are excellent! Collegial Leadership &amp; Teacher Affiliation need to be improved. Look at Health Index SdS
  7. Here are two of the three schools from my group. You can see similar Health Profile scores and their Standardized scores as well.
  8. Here is a table and graph that directly compares the four schools. As you can see, Faith Lutheran is in the HIGH category for School Health (and is far superior to most of the other schools).
  9. The average response for these statements on the scale of 1-4 (4 being the highest) was 3.22. This proves that Faith Lutheran teachers do have above average teacher affiliation, but it is lower than that from the normative sample. Upon further investigation, the statement that received the lowest average response score (lowered the overall dimension) was “teachers accomplish their jobs with enthusiasm.” This may solely be responsible for the low dimension score, and I am not positive of its’ reliability and validity. The statement seems to be subjective in the sense that teachers do not typically spend time in other classrooms actively monitoring the teaching – they can only infer the teacher’s enthusiasm levels based on their interactions (from passing in the hall, to chatting in the lounge, etc.).
