EU Competitiveness Bench marking Report 2015Yaw Appiah
The document is a benchmarking report from the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) that analyzes Europe's competitiveness in areas like economic growth, R&D investment, patent filings, industry production, access to capital, energy prices, and carbon pricing systems. It finds that while Europe has strengths, it faces challenges like slower growth compared to countries like China and India, lower R&D spending compared to competitors, declining shares of global patent filings, higher energy and labor costs, and uneven competitiveness across EU member states. The report calls for European leaders to take steps to ensure Europe remains an attractive business location.
The document discusses various topics related to oil production, pricing, and environmental issues. It provides an agenda on monthly oil production by key countries, the G7 and environment, ethical oil, oil applications and refining, automotive markets worldwide and for electric vehicles, risks to electric vehicles, the electrical grid, oil rigs vs oil pricing, predictions on whether oil will disappear, oil sands and the environment, oil production standards on environmental performance, indigenous rights, and human rights. It also discusses Justin Trudeau and Canada's oil sector, pipelines in Canada, the future of oil, and various blogs on related issues.
This document discusses data on multinational enterprises (MNEs) from the OECD analytical AMNE database. It finds that MNEs account for almost one-third of global production, half of global exports, nearly one-third of world GDP, and about one-fourth of global employment. The document also notes there are important differences across countries and industries in terms of output and activities by foreign affiliates of MNEs.
In Q4 2018, Spain's Harmonised Business Confidence Index decreased 1.1% year-on-year to 133.9 points, recording its biggest drop since 2013. The percentage of pessimistic businessmen increased to 16.1% while optimists fell for the second consecutive quarter to 19%. Meanwhile, industrial new orders in August showed a year-on-year increase of 7.5% led by energy and capital goods, and services activity grew 7.6% led by trade. Spain ranked 26th out of 140 countries in the World Economic Forum's competitiveness index, dropping one spot from 2017, with leading positions in health and infrastructure but weaker performance in the labor market.
Global machine tool consumption boomed from 2003 to 2011, driven initially equally by Asia and Europe but primarily by Asia from 2010 to 2011. Since 2011, global consumption has contracted in every year except 2014, including an 11.9% decline in 2015. Asia accounted for over 60% of the global decline in 2015, with consumption dropping 13% to $45.5 billion. While Asia drove the boom and bust cycles, regional trends have diverged, with parts of Europe and North America consuming more machines since 2011 than in that year.

This document summarizes an OECD tax policy review of Costa Rica conducted in 2017. The review assessed Costa Rica's tax system, benchmarked it against other countries, and provided recommendations to support tax reform. Key findings included that Costa Rica's tax revenues were close to the Latin American average but insufficient given its budget deficit. The tax mix relied heavily on social security contributions and did little to reduce inequality. Tax bases were narrow due to exemptions and avoidance, undermining revenue collection. The review recommended broadening tax bases, increasing revenues, and gradually rebalancing the tax mix as the budget stabilizes. It also suggested strengthening the role of taxes in lowering inequality and modernizing tax administration.
South Africa’s official unemployment rate is on the increase. In the past 10 years (2008–2018), the unemployment rate has increased from 21,5% to almost 28,0%. Unemployment refers to those persons who were not employed, had taken steps to look for a job or to start a business and were available to take up a job had it been offered. Now, the main hiccup lies with those persons who have been unemployed for longer periods and still do not find any form of employment.

It provides recommendations to boost productivity, reduce inequality and regional disparities through measures like increasing spending on training, reducing barriers to entrepreneurship, strengthening innovation policies, and ensuring social benefits are portable across regions. Maintaining structural reforms, fiscal consolidation, and pension reforms are also recommended to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth.
AFRICA’S DEVELOPMENT DYNAMICS 2023: “INVESTING IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.”Christina Parmionova
Africa’s sustainable financing gap until 2030 is about USD 1.6 trillion. According to this report’s estimates, the continent needs additional financing of about USD 194 billion annually to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This annual sustainable financing gap is equivalent to 7% of Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) and 34% of its investments in 2021. The annual gap equals less than 0.2% of the global and 10.5% of the African-held stock of financial assets.
African economies hold unique assets to close the continent’s sustainable financing gap:
• Real GDP growth is estimated to return to the levels before COVID-19, at 3.7% in 2023, the second highest rate in the world after developing Asia (5%) and before Latin America and the Caribbean (1.6%). The growth is estimated at 4.9% in East Africa, 4.3% in Central Africa, 4% in North Africa, 3.8% in West Africa and 1.4% in Southern Africa.
• The proportion of African youth completing an upper-secondary or tertiary education could reach 34% by 2040, up from 23% in 2020 and 18% in 2010. Africa has the world’s youngest population, with a median age of 19 years, compared to 30 for Latin America and the Caribbean, 31 for developing Asia and 42 for Europe.
• Natural resources represent key assets for African economies. Natural capital accounts for 19% of Africa’s total wealth compared to 7% for Latin America and the Caribbean and 3% for developing Asia. From 2011 to 2020, African forests increased the global carbon stock by 11.6 million kilotons of CO2-equivalent net emissions, while carbon stocks in forests outside Africa declined by 13 million kilotons.
• Africa’s domestic financial resources hold a large potential for sustainable development. Domestic government revenues amounted to USD 466 billion in 2021, equivalent to 17% of GDP, and assets held by African institutional investors amounted to USD 1.8 trillion in 2020, equivalent to 73% of GDP. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21, intra-Africa foreign direct investment was three times more resilient than foreign direct investment from outside the continent, boosting growth in renewable energies and in information and communications technology.
Despite this potential, global crises are affecting investment in Africa more than in other regions. The average inflation rate for the continent is projected to reach 15.5% in 2023 – the highest level in 27 years – with peaks above 15% in 11 African countries. As of February 2023, 8 African countries were in debt distress (out of 9 globally), and 13 were at a high risk of debt distress (out of 27 globally). Africa’s share of global greenfield foreign direct investment has been on a downward trend in recent years, dropping to 6% in 2020-21 (the lowest share in 17 years), while high-income countries in other parts of the world have recorded their highest share ever (61%), compared to 17% for developing Asia and
The document is the 2016 OECD Economic Survey of Germany. It discusses Germany's strong economic recovery after the recession, low unemployment rate, and high levels of well-being. However, it notes investment is low compared to other countries, which contributes to low productivity growth. It recommends increasing investment in infrastructure and removing barriers in professional services to boost competition and productivity, especially in the services sector. It also addresses issues around population aging, increasing immigration, education outcomes for immigrants, and encouraging more women and older workers to remain in the labor force.
On 23 October 2013, the OECD launched the "Science, Technology and Industry (STI) Scoreboard: Innovation for Growth 2013" at its headquarters in Paris. The 260 indicators in the STI Scoreboard 2013 show how OECD and partner economies are performing in a wide range of areas to help governments design more effective and efficient policies and monitor progress towards their desired goals.

Skills are the foundation upon which the Netherlands must continue to build its growth and prosperity. Following an extended slowdown in the wake of the global economic crisis, the Netherlands has returned to growth. Employment and labour market participation are both strong, and the Netherlands continues to enjoy a good quality of life with a comparatively wealthy society and comparatively low income inequality. Despite this success, the Netherlands cannot afford to be complacent. Ensuring that the Netherlands continues to be a prosperous and inclusive society in the future will mean ensuring that the Netherlands has a highly skilled population that engages in continuous skills development in adulthood, and finds ways to put those skills to effective use in the economy and society.
Netherlands 2016 OECD Economic Survey unleashing productivity The Hague 3 MarchOECD, Economics Department

This document summarizes key points from the 2018 OECD Economic Survey of Australia. It notes that Australia has experienced 27 years of robust economic growth and rising incomes. Unemployment is falling and quality of life indicators are good. However, housing markets are beginning to cool, household debt remains high, and the country faces challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to meet climate targets. The OECD provides recommendations in areas like monetary policy, fiscal reform, skills and training, inclusion, urban planning, and environmental policy to help ensure Australia's continued economic success.

This document provides an introductory guide for directors on climate risk governance. It begins with an overview of key climate change concepts, including the physical and economic risks posed by climate change and how it impacts most industries. It then discusses how directors can start their board's climate change journey by understanding their duties, assessing risks and opportunities, and examining governance structures and stakeholder expectations. The guide provides questions for boards to consider around climate governance, strategy, and risk oversight. It also reviews litigation risks and regulatory expectations for companies to address climate change.
Australian Bushfire
and Climate Plan
Final report of the National Bushfire and Climate Summit 2020
The severity and scale of Australian bushfires
is escalating
Australia’s Black Summer fires over 2019 and 2020
were unprecedented in scale and levels of destruction.
Fuelled by climate change, the hottest and driest year
ever recorded resulted in fires that burned through land
two-and-a-half times the size of Tasmania (more than 17
million hectares), killed more than a billion animals, and
affected nearly 80 percent of Australians. This included
the tragic loss of over 450 lives from the fires and
smoke, more than 3,000 homes were destroyed, and
thousands of other buildings.
While unprecedented, this tragedy was not
unforeseen, nor unexpected. For decades climate
scientists have warned of an increase in climaterelated disasters, including longer and more
dangerous bushfire seasons, which have become
directly observable over the last 20 years. Extremely
hot, dry conditions, underpinned by years of reduced
rainfall and a severe drought, set the scene for the
Black Summer crisis.
Recommendations - The 3 Rs - Response,
Readiness and Recovery
There is no doubt that bushfires in Australia have
become more frequent, ferocious and unpredictable
with major losses in 2001/02 in NSW, 2003 in the
ACT, 2013 in Tasmania and NSW, 2018 in Queensland,
2009 Black Saturday Fires in Victoria and 2019/20 in
Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia. We are
now in a new era of supercharged bushfire risk, forcing
a fundamental rethink of how we prevent, prepare for,
respond to, and recover from bushfires.
This Australian Bushfire and Climate Plan report
provides a broad plan and practical ideas for
governments, fire and land management agencies
and communities to help us mitigate and adapt to
worsening fire conditions. The 165 recommendations
include many measures that can be implemented right
now, to ensure communities are better protected.
How to work with petroleum hydrocarbon suppliers to reduce and eliminate cont...Turlough Guerin GAICD FGIA
Petroleum hydrocarbon suppliers affect a mine's goals for environmental performance because of the extensive reach of petroleum hydrocarbon products into the mining and minerals product life cycle, their impact on operational efficiencies, cost, and mine viability, and their potential for leaving negative environmental as well as safety legacies. The supplied petroleum hydrocarbon life cycle is a framework that enables structured engagement between supplier and customer on a range of environmental performance issues because it is an example of input into the mining industry that affects the entire mining and minerals processing an value chain. Engagement with suppliers in a proactive manner can be a risk management strategy. Questions for businesses to ask in relation to suppliers and their role in minimizing business risks and creating new value are offered (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/rem.21669).

and on social infrastructure such as aged care and mental health care.
The document discusses how telecommunications can reduce organizations' carbon footprints. It notes that while the ICT sector contributes 2-3% of global emissions, telecommunications offers significant potential to reduce emissions across the economy through enabling virtual alternatives. The author provides three examples of how Telstra's products and services leverage emissions reductions: 1) Trimble GeoManager improves field workforce efficiency by 5.6% in travel and 13.3% in productivity; 2) broadband enables flexible working that can reduce emissions 1.6 tonnes per teleworker; 3) high-definition videoconferencing replaces business air travel. Overall, telecommunications is presented as a key enabler of a low-carbon future through smart applications on broadband networks

Australia pays a high price of a global failure
to deliver new growth in recovery. Compared
to this dismal future, Deloitte Access Economics
estimates a new growth recovery could
grow Australia’s economy by $680 billion

This document outlines a roadmap for reducing Australia's food waste by half by 2030. It proposes establishing a governance entity to lead ongoing delivery of the national food waste strategy and sector action plans. Key initial actions include conducting a feasibility study to fill data gaps and understand delivery trajectories, and developing an investment strategy to ensure long-term funding. A voluntary commitment program is proposed as a vehicle for industries to set waste reduction targets, take actions, and report progress. The roadmap sets out a timeline of activities from 2019-2030, with interim targets and reviews to assess progress toward the overall goal.
The world of venture capital has seen huge changes over the past decade. Ten years ago there were fewer than
20 known unicorns in the US5
; there are now over 2006
. Annual investment of global venture capital has increased
more than fivefold over the same period, rising to $264 billion by 2019. This investment has been dominated by the
tech sector harnessing digital frontiers to disrupt traditional industries – including cloud computing, mobile apps,
marketplaces, data platforms, machine learning and deep tech.7
It is an ecosystem that acts as the birthplace for
innovation and brands that can shape the future of consumerism, sectors and markets.
As COVID-19 has taken hold of the
world, the question of whether venture
capital, and early stage investing more
broadly, is backing and scaling the
innovations our world really needs has
never been more pertinent. Life science
and biotech investing is an asset class
perhaps most resilient and relevant to
the short-term impact of COVID-19,
but there is another impact-critical
investment area that is emerging as
an increasingly important investment
frontier: climate tech.
This research represents a first-ofits-kind analysis of the state of global
climate tech investing. We define what
it is and show how this new frontier
of venture investing is becoming a
standout investing opportunity for the
2020s. Representing 6% of global
annual venture capital funding in 2019,
our analysis finds this segment has
grown over 3750% in absolute terms
since 2013. This is on the order of 3
times the growth rate of VC investment
into AI, during a time period renowned
for its uptick in AI investment.8
Looking forward can climate tech in the
2020s follow a similar journey to the
artificial intelligence (AI) investing boom
in the 2010s? The substantial rates of
growth seen in climate tech in the late
2010s, and the overarching need for
new transformational solutions across
multiple sectors of the economy,
suggests yes. The stage appears set
for an explosion of climate tech into the
mainstream investment and corporate
landscape in the decade ahead.
The document outlines Australia's Technology Investment Roadmap which aims to make Australia a global leader in low emissions technologies. It identifies big technology challenges around clean energy, carbon capture and storage, low carbon materials, and soil carbon measurement. The Roadmap's goals are to accelerate development of new technologies, support jobs and exports, and lower emissions. It proposes priority technologies like clean hydrogen under $2/kg and energy storage under $100/MWh. The Roadmap establishes a framework for government and private investment of over $18 billion and $50-100 billion respectively to develop priority technologies and support over 130,000 jobs by 2030.
Nine shifts will radically change the way construction projects are delivered—and similar
industries have already undergone many of the shifts. A combination of sustainability
requirements, cost pressure, skills scarcity, new materials, industrial approaches, digitalization,
and a new breed of player looks set to transform the value chain. The shifts ahead include
productization and specialization, increased value-chain control, and greater customercentricity
and branding. Consolidation and internationalization will create the scale needed to
allow higher levels of investment in digitalization, R&D and equipment, and sustainability as well
as human capital.
The document outlines UDIA National's plan to help the Australian housing and construction industry bounce back from COVID-19 through targeted policy initiatives. It discusses how the industry has been impacted by COVID-19, with inquiries, sales, and construction falling significantly. It argues that without intervention, further job losses are likely as the industry employs over 750,000 people directly and indirectly. The plan calls for immediate federal stimulus to kickstart the housing market and flow through to economic recovery. It acknowledges actions already taken but argues more is needed to move from economic stabilization to recovery.

This document provides an overview of the key findings from a report developed by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) regarding the conceptual foundations for setting science-based net-zero targets in the corporate sector. Some of the main points discussed include:
- Net-zero emissions must be achieved by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5°C according to the IPCC. Corporate net-zero targets vary in their approaches and definitions.
- Science-based net-zero targets for companies require deep reductions in value chain emissions consistent with 1.5°C pathways, as well as offsetting any remaining emissions through carbon removal by 2050.
- Compensation and carbon removal can play a
Compositions of iron-meteorite parent bodies constrainthe structure of the pr...Sérgio Sacani
Magmatic iron-meteorite parent bodies are the earliest planetesimals in the Solar System, and they preserve information about conditions and planet-forming processes in thesolar nebula. In this study, we include comprehensive elemental compositions andfractional-crystallization modeling for iron meteorites from the cores of five differenti-ated asteroids from the inner Solar System. Together with previous results of metalliccores from the outer Solar System, we conclude that asteroidal cores from the outerSolar System have smaller sizes, elevated siderophile-element abundances, and simplercrystallization processes than those from the inner Solar System. These differences arerelated to the formation locations of the parent asteroids because the solar protoplane-tary disk varied in redox conditions, elemental distributions, and dynamics at differentheliocentric distances. Using highly siderophile-element data from iron meteorites, wereconstruct the distribution of calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) across theprotoplanetary disk within the first million years of Solar-System history. CAIs, the firstsolids to condense in the Solar System, formed close to the Sun. They were, however, concentrated within the outer disk and depleted within the inner disk. Future modelsof the structure and evolution of the protoplanetary disk should account for this dis-tribution pattern of CAIs.
Evidence of Jet Activity from the Secondary Black Hole in the OJ 287 Binary S...Sérgio Sacani
Wereport the study of a huge optical intraday flare on 2021 November 12 at 2 a.m. UT in the blazar OJ287. In the binary black hole model, it is associated with an impact of the secondary black hole on the accretion disk of the primary. Our multifrequency observing campaign was set up to search for such a signature of the impact based on a prediction made 8 yr earlier. The first I-band results of the flare have already been reported by Kishore et al. (2024). Here we combine these data with our monitoring in the R-band. There is a big change in the R–I spectral index by 1.0 ±0.1 between the normal background and the flare, suggesting a new component of radiation. The polarization variation during the rise of the flare suggests the same. The limits on the source size place it most reasonably in the jet of the secondary BH. We then ask why we have not seen this phenomenon before. We show that OJ287 was never before observed with sufficient sensitivity on the night when the flare should have happened according to the binary model. We also study the probability that this flare is just an oversized example of intraday variability using the Krakow data set of intense monitoring between 2015 and 2023. We find that the occurrence of a flare of this size and rapidity is unlikely. In machine-readable Tables 1 and 2, we give the full orbit-linked historical light curve of OJ287 as well as the dense monitoring sample of Krakow.
Anti-Universe And Emergent Gravity and the Dark UniverseSérgio Sacani
Recent theoretical progress indicates that spacetime and gravity emerge together from the entanglement structure of an underlying microscopic theory. These ideas are best understood in Anti-de Sitter space, where they rely on the area law for entanglement entropy. The extension to de Sitter space requires taking into account the entropy and temperature associated with the cosmological horizon. Using insights from string theory, black hole physics and quantum information theory we argue that the positive dark energy leads to a thermal volume law contribution to the entropy that overtakes the area law precisely at the cosmological horizon. Due to the competition between area and volume law entanglement the microscopic de Sitter states do not thermalise at sub-Hubble scales: they exhibit memory effects in the form of an entropy displacement caused by matter. The emergent laws of gravity contain an additional ‘dark’ gravitational force describing the ‘elastic’ response due to the entropy displacement. We derive an estimate of the strength of this extra force in terms of the baryonic mass, Newton’s constant and the Hubble acceleration scale a0 = cH0, and provide evidence for the fact that this additional ‘dark gravity force’ explains the observed phenomena in galaxies and clusters currently attributed to dark matter.
Discovery of An Apparent Red, High-Velocity Type Ia Supernova at 𝐳 = 2.9 wi...Sérgio Sacani

with a host spectroscopic redshift of

Photometric and spectroscopic followup with NIRCam and NIRSpec, respectively, confirm the redshift and yield UV-NIR light-curve, NIR color, and spectroscopic information all consistent with a Type Ia classification. Despite its classification as a likely SN Ia, SN 2023adsy is both fairly red (

km/s) compared to the general population of SNe Ia. While these characteristics are consistent with some Ca-rich SNe Ia, particularly SN 2016hnk, SN 2023adsy is intrinsically brighter than the low-

Ca-rich population. Although such an object is too red for any low-

cosmological sample, we apply a fiducial standardization approach to SN 2023adsy and find that the SN 2023adsy luminosity distance measurement is in excellent agreement (

Ca-rich SNe Ia, SN 2023adsy is standardizable and gives no indication that SN Ia standardized luminosities change significantly with redshift. A larger sample of distant SNe Ia is required to determine if SN Ia population characteristics at high-

truly diverge from their low-

counterparts, and to confirm that standardized luminosities nevertheless remain constant with redshift.

Embracing Deep Variability For Reproducibility and Replicability
Abstract: Reproducibility (aka determinism in some cases) constitutes a fundamental aspect in various fields of computer science, such as floating-point computations in numerical analysis and simulation, concurrency models in parallelism, reproducible builds for third parties integration and packaging, and containerization for execution environments. These concepts, while pervasive across diverse concerns, often exhibit intricate inter-dependencies, making it challenging to achieve a comprehensive understanding. In this short and vision paper we delve into the application of software engineering techniques, specifically variability management, to systematically identify and explicit points of variability that may give rise to reproducibility issues (eg language, libraries, compiler, virtual machine, OS, environment variables, etc). The primary objectives are: i) gaining insights into the variability layers and their possible interactions, ii) capturing and documenting configurations for the sake of reproducibility, and iii) exploring diverse configurations to replicate, and hence validate and ensure the robustness of results. By adopting these methodologies, we aim to address the complexities associated with reproducibility and replicability in modern software systems and environments, facilitating a more comprehensive and nuanced perspective on these critical aspects.

TOPIC OF DISCUSSION: CENTRIFUGATION SLIDESHARE.pptxshubhijain836
Centrifugation is a powerful technique used in laboratories to separate components of a heterogeneous mixture based on their density. This process utilizes centrifugal force to rapidly spin samples, causing denser particles to migrate outward more quickly than lighter ones. As a result, distinct layers form within the sample tube, allowing for easy isolation and purification of target substances.
