2. 2019 ICF-CO Election Season
Holiday Makers
by Dr. Lisa Hale, Ph.D., MCC, MCEC
President, ICF Colorado
I recently enjoyed my Saturday morning watching a show about the
extraordinary art of architecture. My sister is an architect, and I
wanted to experience some of what her point of view might be like.
The British host talked about a region in North Portugal where
"Holiday Makers" love to go. I missed the whole next 10 minutes of
the show as my mind launched into a reverie about how in America we say we are going to
"take a vacation" or Holiday. I've never heard anyone say, "we are going to make a
vacation." Yet, if we are really living as conscious creators of our lives, we absolutely want to
make our vacations and holidays, don't we?
In fact, we want to make all of our experiences.
This is not a new idea for us as coaches. The idea of being creators of all our experiences,
and helping clients do the same, is core to what coaching is. Yet our language often reflects
a more unconscious receiving of life than it does the creation of it. We often sound like we
are at the effect of life, rather than the maker of it.
We say:
• Let's take a vacation
• You'll never guess what happened to me
• I had to take my kids to the doctor
• Business has been slow
• The economy tanked
• This week was long
• That meeting was boring
• My health hasn’' been good
• We had to cancel because of the weather
• That person is in charge
And so on.
We all talk this way. I speak, write and coach on taking deep ownership of the experience
you and I have of life, and I catch myself using those "at the effect of" kinds of phrases too.
At least I did until I started paying attention to the power of language.
When we say, "We are going to take a vacation", what do those words convey to our
unconscious and subconscious mind? What thoughts do words like that emerge from? Which
of those thoughts are uplifting and which are not? I asked myself these same questions.
Some of what I came up with is this:
3. Take means subtraction – so if I take a vacation, I am subtracting from other things.
Take can also imply receiving – I receive a vacation with no agency to decide what
that vacation is.
The word vacation derives from "vacate" and again implies fleeing or subtracting.
Take can also mean command, or claim, in this sense.
Vacation can also mean deliberately putting down concerns and "vacating" a domain
of energy or attention.
The first of those is a little apologetic (maybe only a little, or maybe a lot). In taking a
holiday or a vacation, if I feel apologetic about it, I bring the energy of guilt or reluctance to
the experience. Making a holiday doesn't feel that way to me. Instead "making a holiday"
feels nourishing and intentional – at least to me.
What is your experience of the language you use?
In what way could you benefit from interrogating your own assumptions – those
assumptions that underpin the language you use?
How can you use this lens to guide yourself in making your practice? In supporting your
clients to create their lives with intention?
Perhaps we all can benefit from paying attention to our language. What opportunities are
there for you?
We, at ICF-CO, have been extremely intentional in the approach, language and decisions
that we have made, created and undertaken. In keeping with that, we ask you to consider
two ways to create your professional experience:
1. Please vote at the upcoming ICF-CO Board elections.
and
2. Volunteer to help out. We have specific limited projects as well as longer duration projects
with which the Chapter would gratefully receive your help!
Wishing for you a creative and joyful October!

Pro Bono Coaching Opportunity with ICF-CO and the
Posner Center for International Development
Chris Coward
Director of Business Development, ICF Colorado
We are excited to report that ICF-CO is participating in the ICF Global
Ignite initiative which is aimed at supporting organizations who are
4. working on the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. See more about Ignite here:
https://foundationoficf.org/home/ignite/.
We have partnered with the Posner Center for International Development whose mission is
to convene, connect, and catalyze the international development community to collaborate
for greater impact. Posner has about 230 member organizations working in the foreign
assistance, humanitarian, and disaster sectors. Donna Read, our fellow ICF-CO member, is a
member of this organization and connected us with their leadership.
Where we are currently is that Donna and I have met with 4 leaders from different Posner
Center member organizations that fit the Ignite criteria and are interested in having a coach
to support them with their leadership development. We expect the opportunity to expand to
include both additional leaders in these organizations and possibly additional leaders from
other Posner Center member organizations. Since we don’t have a sense of how many
qualified coaches want to participate, we are starting small and will build from there.
Here are some of the logistics:
1. To participate coaches must be a member of ICF CO and hold an ICF Credential of an
ACC, PCC or MCC.
2. Coaches will deliver up to 10 hours of pro bono coaching over a 6- month period.
3. ICF Global and the Ignite Initiative have created the materials and structure for this
engagement and are partnering with us to support the project.
4. Interested coaches need to send in their Coach Bio sheet in the template that was
recently developed.
If this opportunity calls to you, please reach out to me at chris@chriscoward.com or Donna

6. The Coaching Inspiration Unconference
November 2018 In-Person Event
Date: November 3, 2018
Time: 10:00am - 2:30pm MT
Topic: The Coaching Inspiration Unconference
Various Speakers
Location:
Tivoli Center
Auraria Campus 900 Auraria Parkway Denver, CO
CCEs: 2.5 in Resource Development
This will be a powerful 4.5 hours of deep, peer-to-peer, experiential learning, with emphasis
on practice and feedback. This is an extended session of deeper peer learning, including
extensive coaching practice and feedback. It's a more social and less formal environment,
with no slides and lots of fresh ideas for people to pull from.
Attendees will take away fresh and inspiring ideas that can be applied directly back in their
coaching practice. And it will be a rich, community-building experience for everyone! This
event is for people who are serious about coaching and ready to dive deep into cultivating
coaching mastery.
The morning starts with an Experiential Marketplace: Attendees will nourish their coaching
practice by engaging in a marketplace of practices, stories and ideas to plant seeds of
inspiration for learning by coaching. You’ll get to choose which sessions to attend from more
than a dozen choices, based on your needs and interests!
After lunch (which is included in the registration!), the afternoon will be dedicated to peer
coaching: working in a focused way on developing coaching skills. Coachees may choose to
use the coaching sessions to explore exactly how they will apply the ideas they have heard
in their own coaching practice.
Everyone is invited to come and play! This will be like no coaching event you've attended in
the past and will help move you to the next level of your coaching. We’ve priced the event
so everyone can participate.

OPEN, Administrative Director
A message from Monica McNulty about the board position of Administrative Director -
The role of Administrative Director is a great opportunity to step into Board service,
even if you've never served on a board before. I have served in this role for 5 of the
last 7 years, and I can honestly say that it has been a joy. I have grown a great deal
as a result of surrounding myself with such a great group of leaders. The quality of
the relationships within the board and the depth of connection among us has been the
best part of board service, which has kept me wanting to serve again and again. The
responsibilities of the Administrative Director are fairly simple, with an average time
commitment of about 2 hours per week. The primary tasks involve drafting agendas
for the monthly board meetings, taking notes and writing up minutes for those
meetings, and helping to track pending tasks and upcoming meetings. The benefits of
this position far outweigh the time commitment. Being able to say that I am on the
board of ICF-CO has definitely opened up opportunities to me that would not have
been opened otherwise. I will be glad to work with you through the transition period
until you are fully comfortable in your new role. Please let Jacquie Fedo or myself
know if you would like to come and play with this amazing team of leaders!

OPPORTUNITY FOR ICF-CO MEMBERS: EDUCATION GROUPS 2019
As you know, in the last year we've grown our Education Group offering to seven high-
impact quality groups. We send our deep gratitude to Judy Sabah, Jacquie Fedo, Ruth
Sharon, Jim Sharon, Walt Hastings, Sheryl Zausen, Geo Roberts and Sara Boas (Zora) for
their powerful leadership this year. Each one is so talented and generous!
We are now opening up for Education Groups for 2019, and we'd love to support your
contribution! If you've had a coaching area that you're passionate about, or want to develop
in yourself, please consider becoming a leader in this amazing community. There is great
flexibility: groups can be various sizes, meet virtually or in person (or both!), and can cover
core competencies, self management, or other aspects of success in coaching.
Some guidelines:
It's a good idea to plan regular meetings out 6 or 12 months - continuity is valuable,
and we want to encourage participants to become loyal to your group.
You'll have access to the ICF-CO tools: Zoom, our teleconference line, the newsletter,
and Basecamp. We can create a specific Basecamp area for your group so that
learning and community continue between meetings.
Kelly will set up the webpage for people to sign up initially, but after that, you'll
maintain direct communication with your attendees.
We're putting a tool in place to reduce the work of giving CCE certificates for your
attendees and plan to have that implemented by January.

16. Development Education Group, "Working on the Core" -- those things
at the heart of what makes us grow. You’ll gain 2.5 CCE Units towards
your ICF certification, and .5 Resources credit.
Here's the agenda:
6.00 – 6.10pm:
Meet and Greet
6.10 – 6.30pm:
An icebreaker/warm up to get us in the frame and perceptually ready
6.30 – 6.55pm:
Brief Introduction to a model or thought process which might help you as you work with
your clients, and then a chance for you to select one of the ICF Core Competencies to work
on.
6.55 – 8.30pm:
Small Group Triads or Quads. This is a process of “close in coaching” where one person acts
as the coach, someone else the client, and then either one or two observers, depending
upon attendance. Our aim is that everyone has the opportunity to practice some “how to’s”
on a competency or indicator of a competency they select. For instance, deepening our
listening, or designing actions, etc. These will all start from establishing a “coaching
agreement” for the first 5- 10 minutes of their practice session. Then, each coach will have
10 minutes to coach the client, with observer(s) collecting evidence of how the coach did in
practicing their chosen skill area. There will be a “time-out” of 10 minutes during the
practice period for either the client, coach or observer(s) to spot the coach doing something
well, ask for help, or simply make an observation. So 30 minutes total, then swap roles until
all have completed. Quads will have to work faster, but will get more learning!
8.30 to 9.00pm:
Review, summarize, and commit, plus share any announcements.
Come get yourself ready for a set of fantastic evenings of exploring why coaching is the best
way of leading and learning there is on the planet.
These workshops are highly interactive "live coaching" practice of all the ICF core
competencies. This offering is designed for seasoned coaches to keep their skills sharp
through practicing their contracting, listening, partnering, questioning, designing actions,
etc., and getting feedback from other coaches on how well they did on their chosen area of
practice. Also designed for those new to coaching to see how they might incorporate the
coach's toolkit in how they lead others.
Benefits:
Live coaching practice and feedback on chosen core competencies
Introduction to new material/models and tools used by other coaching training
organizations approved by the ICF
Increased understanding of how coaching applies to leadership in a variety of
situations and groups of people
Growth in confidence to use a coaching approach in our lives and in our work
17. Exploration is becoming a credentialed coach is the right career path
Mixing with other coaching professionals in the region to share best practice
Feel the stretch and learn something new to practice each and every time!
Meeting Logistics:
Monthly in-person meetings in Colorado Springs.
First Thursday of the month, 6:00-9:00pm, except when that clashes with Denver ICF-CO
meetings.
Light snacks and refreshments provided.
Minimum 6, maximum 20
Facilitated by:
Geo Roberts | geo@georoberts.com

Important: Notice about CCEs
This is a reminder that Continuing
Coaching Education credits are important!
Even if you’re not pursuing a credential
right now, maybe you’ll want to in the
future. At that point, you’ll be scrambling to
go back in your records to find CCEs from
programs you attended, mentor coaching
hours, and hours of coaching client
sessions. So go ahead and create a
spreadsheet or other document, and
update it at the end of every month. You’ll
be glad you did!
And ALWAYS request CCEs for program
you attend, even if you’re not working
toward a credential right now.
Our Colorado ICF Chapter encourages all
members to be credentialed with the ICF
and to continue to improve their coaching
skills by striving to achieve the next level
of credentialing. Many coaches find that
the choice to pursue credentialing is often
driven less by any external requirement
and more by the desire to up-level the skill
and range of our coaching and attain
greater mastery, thus enabling us to
deliver more value to current and future
clients.
To qualify for a credential, a certain
number of coach-specific training hours
are required. To renew a credential, 40
CCE’s (Continuing Coach Education)
hours are required. Our Chapter can
supply some of these hours for you
through attendance at monthly meetings or
participation in special events, such as
webinars, workshops, and the ICF-CO
Conference. If you anticipate needing
CCEs, you can register to receive them
when you sign up on our website to attend
19. any of our events for which CCE's are
being offered.
Even if you’re not currently pursuing
credentialing (or advanced credentialing),
we suggest that you request the CCE
certificate whenever the option is offered,
and keep it on file for later use, as
needed. You can also ask our Virtual
Assistant, Kelly Johnson, to provide you
with CCE certificates going back as far as
two years previous (but no farther than two
years). Kelly may be reached at
303-840-5994 or at
kjohnson@cornerstoneva.com. Please
allow at least two weeks advance notice to
process your request.
