Objectives Followingthisactivity,studentwill be able to:
 Demonstrate anunderstandingof the elementsthatmake upan ecosystem
 Describe one elementof alocal ecosystem
Materials  Parentpermissionform- signed
 Paperand pencil
 Coloredpencils and/orcrayonsand/ormarkers
Procedures 1. Give the studentsa parentpermissionformfora fieldtriptoa local
ecosystemsuchasa park, pond,or fieldnearthe school priorto the lesson.
Have studentsbringback the signedpermissionform.
2. Watch the videoElementsof Biology:Ecosystems:OrganismsandTheir

3. Have studentsconsiderthe followingquestions:
 What isan ecosystem?
 What elementsmake upanecosystem?
 Hoe are the elementsof anecosystemrelated?
 What isthe relationshipbetweenpredatorsandpreyinan
ecosystem?
 What isthe relationshipbetweenproducersandconsumersinan
ecosystem?
4. Go to designatedfieldtriplocation,splitthe studentsintopairsor small
groupsof three or four,andhave themobserve the plantsandanimals,have
the studentskeep alist,butassignelementsforeachgroupto focuson. Have
studentsconsiderthe followingquestions,tobe answeredwhenyouhave
returnedfromthe fieldtrip:
 Is the elementanautotrophora heterotroph?
 If it is an animal,whatdoesiteat?
 Is the animal a primaryor secondaryconsumer?
 Is the animal predatoror prey?
 What abiotic,or nonlivingthingsare partof the ecosystem?
5. Have the studentsdraw a picture of the environmenttheyobserved,and
label itsimilartothe image below,butinclude the type of element.
Assessment 1. Have the studentsanswerthe questionsmentionedinpoints3and4 of
the proceduressections.
2. Collectthe answersfora grade.
3. Giventenquestionsthe studentswillbe able toanswerthem(usingfree
response) withno more than2 incorrectanswers

Give the studentsa parentpermissionformfora fieldtriptoa local ecosystemsuchasa park, pond,or fieldnearthe school priorto the lesson. Have studentsbringback the signedpermissionform. 2. Have studentsconsiderthe followingquestions:  What isan ecosystem?  What elementsmake upanecosystem?  Hoe are the elementsof anecosystemrelated?  What isthe relationshipbetweenpredatorsandpreyinan ecosystem?  What isthe relationshipbetweenproducersandconsumersinan ecosystem? 4. Go to designatedfieldtriplocation,splitthe studentsintopairsor small groupsof three or four,andhave themobserve the plantsandanimals,have the studentskeep alist,butassignelementsforeachgroupto focuson. Have studentsconsiderthe followingquestions,tobe answeredwhenyouhave returnedfromthe fieldtrip:  Is the elementanautotrophora heterotroph?  If it is an animal,whatdoesiteat?  Is the animal a primaryor secondaryconsumer?  Is the animal predatoror prey?  What abiotic,or nonlivingthingsare partof the ecosystem? 5. Have the studentsdraw a picture of the environmenttheyobserved,and label itsimilartothe image below,butinclude the type of element. Assessment 1. Have the studentsanswerthe questionsmentionedinpoints3and4 of the proceduressections. 2. Collectthe answersfora grade. 3. Giventenquestionsthe studentswillbe able toanswerthem(usingfree response) withno more than2 incorrectanswers
