oBIXOpen Building Information Xchange
What is oBIX ?
 oBIX (OASIS Open Building Information Xchange Technical Committee)
is an industry-wide initiative to define XML- and Web services-based
mechanisms for building control systems.
 oBIX (for Open Building Information Exchange) is a standard for
RESTful Web Services-based interfaces to building control systems. oBIX
is about reading and writing data over a network of devices using XML
and URIs, within a framework specifically designed for building
automation.
History
 The effort to develop the oBIX standard was initiated in April 2003
by the Continental Automated Buildings Association (CABA), an
industry group that promotes advanced technologies for the
automation of homes and buildings in North America.
 A year later, CABA transferred oversight of the effort to the
Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information
Standards (OASIS), a not-for-profit international consortium that
develops e-business standards.
Mission & Vision
 The mission of the Open Building Information Exchange (oBIX)
committee is to develop a publicly available web services interface
specification that can be used to obtain data in a simple and secure
manner from HVAC, access control, utilities, and other building
automation systems, and to provide data exchange between facility
systems and enterprise applications.
Based on
 The oBIX standard is being developed around Extensible Markup
Language (XML), which is itself an evolving standard for
communicating complex data across the Internet.
 Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the preferred tool for
organizing text and images on Web pages.
 XML is the preferred tool for mining and monitoring Web-based
data.
oBIX
 Open – all technical details freely available
 Building – any and all building systems
 Information – pertinent system data
 Xchange – interoperability
Where is data buried ?
 HVAC
 Lighting
 Life Safety
 Card Access
 Security
 Energy Management
How is the data structured ?
 Simple data follows the SI system:
 Mass in kilograms
 Length in meters
 Time in seconds
 More complex data structures are built from these
What kind of data ?
 Simple: Room Temperature of Lobby
 Lengthy: List of people currently in East Wing with time of entry
 Complex: Current state of all systems across an entire university
campus
 Reports: Variation of internal humidity of sports hall over the last 6
months
How is the data accessed ?
 Data is accessed at a ‘Datapoint’ and exposed by a ‘Point Service’
 Datapoints are revealed by a ‘Discovery Service’
 Data trends are reported by a ‘History Service’
 Critical events are signalled by the ‘Alarm Service’
Elements of oBIX
 Points: representing a single scalar value and its status – typically
these map to sensors, actuators, or configuration variables like a
setpoint.
 Alarming: modeling, routing, and acknowledgment of alarms.
Alarms indicate a condition which requires notification of either a
user or another application.
 Histories: modeling and querying of time sampled point data.
Typically edge devices collect a time stamped history of point
values which can be fed into higher level applications for analysis.
Advantages
 Enables Building Management Systems to communicate with
external services.
 Represents information in a standardized format.
 Enables defining specialized contracts to invoke operations based
on security permission and situation awareness.
 Provides for changing permissions based on alarm states
