INTRODUCTION
 The Practical Year Training Programme, (PYTP) is a Student Industrial
Experience Scheme (SIWES) based programme, established in the faculty
of agriculture and forestry, university of Ibadan in 1976
Primary Objective; To expose students of the faculty to real life farming
situations and intrinsic aspects of the discipline in practical form.
It was introduced with the hopes that students, upon graduation can
utilize the knowledge acquired during the training, and be self sufficient
in the agricultural industry thus benefitting the economy and society.

• Vegetables growing on the plot
• Harvested vegetables before being transported to
the sales point.
• Mature vegetable ready for harvest.
 The land preparation included slashing and
clearing of stumps, tilling and making of
seed bed.
 The seeds were planted by broadcasting
method in a nursery site.
 Upon emergence, young plants were
transplanted in rows to a prepared
permanent plot
 Transplanting at a spacing of 30cm apart.
 Left to mature into reproductive phase and
develop seeds which would be used in the
next planting season.

Oil Palm Production
Important activities in oil palm cultivation
include
 Pre planting operations (purchase of
seedling, setting up of nursery, ploughing
and harrowing)
 Transplanting from nursery is done at a
spacing of 7m x 7m
 Maintenance of oil palm field during its 3
years growing period.
Oil Palm Processing
Stages involved in the processing of oil
palm into palm oil and other products.
 Harvesting and bunch reception at the
processing site.
 Debunching
 Sorting of palm fruits
 Boiling of palm fruits to soften the
endocarp
 Digestion
 Extraction and washing of oil
 Boiling of extracted oil at a very high
temperature to sterilize the oil
 Cooling and packaging of oil.
 Products obtained from oil pam
processing include Palm oil, palm
kernel oil, palm kernel cake etc.
• The digester used to remove endocarp from palm fruit.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Information dissemination
from coordinators should be
improved
Use of advanced technology
should be encouraged by the
PYTP board.
Introduction of irrigation
system on maize and
vegetable farm to mitigate the
adverse effects of
unpredictable rainfall pattern.
CONCLUSION
My involvement in the training
has broadened my horizon about
the practice of agriculture
I have gained immense
knowledge with respect to
vegetable production,
management of a livestock farm.
I have also discovered several
areas of interests which I would
pursue and the future of
agriculture is bright.

Oil Palm Production Important activities in oil palm cultivation include  Pre planting operations (purchase of seedling, setting up of nursery, ploughing and harrowing)  Transplanting from nursery is done at a spacing of 7m x 7m  Maintenance of oil palm field during its 3 years growing period.

Oil Palm Processing Stages involved in the processing of oil palm into palm oil and other products.  Harvesting and bunch reception at the processing site.  Debunching  Sorting of palm fruits  Boiling of palm fruits to soften the endocarp  Digestion  Extraction and washing of oil  Boiling of extracted oil at a very high temperature to sterilize the oil  Cooling and packaging of oil.  Products obtained from oil pam processing include Palm oil, palm kernel oil, palm kernel cake etc. • The digester used to remove endocarp from palm fruit.

RECOMMENDATIONS Information dissemination from coordinators should be improved Use of advanced technology should be encouraged by the PYTP board. Introduction of irrigation system on maize and vegetable farm to mitigate the adverse effects of unpredictable rainfall pattern. CONCLUSION My involvement in the training has broadened my horizon about the practice of agriculture I have gained immense knowledge with respect to vegetable production, management of a livestock farm. I have also discovered several areas of interests which I would pursue and the future of agriculture is bright.
