The document summarizes Akanksha Nutrition Assessment Program (ANAP) and Malnutrition Eradication Rehabilitation Activity (MERA) conducted in Akanksha schools since February 2013. Over 1200 students were screened under ANAP to identify malnutrition using WHO growth standards. Under MERA, severely underweight children (-3 to -4 SD) from 3 schools received an 40-day energy dense food treatment which resulted in an average daily weight gain of 15.46 grams. The program aims to develop nutrition awareness, empower mothers, and improve family care approaches and health seeking attitudes through behavioral change communication and family involvement in nutrition support.

Longitudinal Changes in Anthropometric Measures in Children in 5th Grade_ACSM...Brianna Higgins
Poster Presentation at 2016 ACSM Annual Meeting, analyzing the change over one year in anthropometric measures in children participating in school-based obesity intervention.
* The Eight Components of Coordinated School Health
* The roles and requirements of Healthy School Teams
* Why health and physical activity are important for student academic success
* Physical Education/Physical Activity (PAPE) state law and reporting requirements
* Information regarding state required fitness testing, including body mass index (BMI) screenings and the PACER assessment
Mid-day meal is one of the huge project initiated by the government of India which feeds over 100 million school children across the country. To maintain the quality of the mid-day meal, several measures have been taken.
Objective: Food habits may be associated with inflammation, but there is little information about processed and ultra-processed foods in children. Thus, our aim was to investigate the relationship between processed and ultra-processed foods, energy intake, total fat and saturated fats intake and high sensitivity C - reactive protein levels (hs - CRP) in children.
Design: A cross-sectional study with a population-based cluster sample.

India is a developing country where the percentage of malnutrition and undernutrition is higher than that of developed countries. Nutritional status is such a state of health of a person, which is affected by the usefulness of food elements.

Encouraging Appropriate Infant Feeding Practices in Slums: A Positive Devian...Siddharth Agarwal
Abstract:
Nutritional Positive Deviant (PD) infants grow ‘bigger’ and ‘faster’ than other infants living in a similarly socio-economically deprived environment. Certain positive feeding and care giving practices adopted by mothers of PD infants enable them rear better nourished and active infants. Limited data is available on using PD mothers as counselors encouraging appropriate and feasible infant feeding practices (IFP) in India. Hence, the present study was undertaken. The study was conducted in a slum of Delhi (India). Twenty-Five infants aged 6-12 months were weighed. Three infants with normal weight for age status (as per Gomez classification) were classified as PD infants. A PD inquiry (PDI) was conducted on current IFP
in these families to identify PD behaviours adopted and determinants for the same. PD behaviours identified
included:feeding modified family pot (energy dense) complementary food at least two times a day,
supervised bowl feeding by the mother and father support to the mother in infant feeding and care giving.
Two,of these three PD mothers volunteered to discuss the benefits of PD behaviours they had been
practicing with the other 22 members of the group. The strategy promoted collective dialogue and discussion
to try the PD behaviours through weekly group discussions over a period of four weeks. After four weeks,
feeding modified family pot food with addition of 1 tea spoon of ghee (milk fat) in food (10/22), feeding an extra
mid-day cereal snack (12/22) were PD behaviours adopted by other members of the group (22). It can be
concluded that i) behaviours requiring least preparation time were easily adopted and ii) PD mothers can
be effective counselors to encourage appropriate IFP

Weight Gain (in grams)
• The average weight gain in the above program for 43 children was 15.46 Grams

(The program was conducted for 40 days and the weight gain of these 40 days was
coretaled to find out weight gain for one day.)
4. About entire Nutrition program –
The Malnutrition eradication Rehabilitation Activity (MERA) is one of the ambitious program to cater
underweight or nutritionally deprived children, their families through community approach. The entire
exercise begins with assessment of malnutrition status from a entire spectrum of Underweight &
Wasting. These children are identified from universal standards of World Health Organisation through
its growth graphs.
Key objective of MERA –
1. Develop awareness about health & nutrition.
2. Capacity building of mother & maternal empowerment for healthy food approaches.
3. Developing a family care approach to child.
4. Improve personal health & hygiene to reduce disease frequency burden & facilitate by reducing
school absenteeism.
5. Develop a health seeking attitude in early childhood.
Basic principle of MERA –
Behavioral Change Communication & Family involvement in nutrition support.
Flow of entire exercise –
1. Assessment of weight, height & date of birth.
2. Identification of Wasting & Underweight children in categories of severe & moderate.
3. Separating severe (-3 to -4 SD) children & including them under 40 days program.
4. Three Interventions focused – Energy Dense Food (ladoo), Fruits & Complimentary proteins in
tiffin & Family empowerment session.
Strengths of activity –
1. Since last two years’ parents getting sensitized to healthier choices in food.
2. Weight gain in children to boost parents with a change.
3. SMC, Teachers, Helpers, School leaders getting actively participated.
4. Entire program running on in house skilled social work team trained.
5. Parents actively involved in entire activity.
6. Community as whole getting benefitted.
7. Perhaps no other school in India has application based Nutritional Intervention Model as per
WHO guidelines.
