Ulcers are wounds in the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract caused by digestive juices. Bacteria can also contribute to ulcers forming in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic, inflammatory conditions of unknown cause that affect the gastrointestinal region. Appendicitis is an acute inflammation of the appendix that requires urgent surgery if the appendix becomes infected or swollen. Food intolerances like celiac disease and lactose intolerance cause negative reactions after ingesting specific foods like gluten or lactose.
