INTRODUCTION
• A nutraceutical is a food or bio-molecule with a medical-
health benefit, including the prevention and treatment of
disease
• The term was coined in late 1980s by Stephen DeFelice,
M.D., founder and Chairman of the Foundation for
Innovation in Medicine. The concept of Nutraceutical
evolved in early 1900s when iodine was admixed with salt
to prevent goiter (an enlargement of thyroid gland) in US.
NUTRACEUTICAL
“ A food or part of food or nutrient, that provides
health benefits, including the prevention and
treatment of a disease.”
• Nutraceutical =“ nutrition” + “pharmaceutical”
• Bridging the gap between food & medicine
•

HISTORY
Nutraceuticals also known as:
• Phytoceuticals
• Phytochemicals
• Phytonutrients
• Phytofoods
• Functional food
Several terms need to be defined in order
to gain an understanding of
nutraceuticals
• Nutrient
• Feed
• Food
• Drug
Classification of Nutraceutical
Sr.no Class Examples
1 Inorganic Minerals and Supplements Minerals
2 Probiotics Helpful Bacteria
3 Prebiotics Digestive enzymes
4 Dietary fibers Fibers
5 Antioxidants Natural antioxidant
6 Phytochemicals (Fatty acids,
Phenolics,Lipids
Proteins).
Omega 3 fatty acids, Tea
polyphenols, Caratenoids,
Soyaproteins.
Probiotics
• Probiotics are microorganisms that provide health benefits
when consumed.
• Lactic acid bacteria and Yoghurt reduces Cholesterol level in
the body.
• Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei have positive
effect on the digestive health.
Some probiotic food are;
• Pickled vegetables, Fermented bean paste such
as tempeh, miso
• Kefir,Buttermilk
• Sauerkraut,Soy sauce
Prebiotics
• Prebiotics are typically non digestible fiber compounds
that pass undigested through the upper part of the
gastrointestinal tract and stimulate the growth and/or
activity of advantageous bacteria in that colonize
the large bowel by acting as substrate for them.
• Distinct Prebiotics are Oligofructose, Inulin,
Oligofructose Enriched Inulin.
• Prebiotics should increase the quantity and activity of
Lactic Acid bacteria and Bifidobacteria.
• Sources: Acacia Gum, Raw Chicory Root, Raw Garlic,
Raw Onion, Cooked Onion
Traditional Nutraceutical
• Natural whole foods i.e. fruits, vegetables, grain, fish, dairy
and meat products having potential health qualities
– Lycopene in tomatoes
– Omega - 3 fatty acids in salmon
– Saponins in soybean
Non-traditional Nutraceutical
• Foods resulting from agricultural breeding or added
nutrients and / or ingredients
 Beta carotene enriched rice
 Vitamin enhanced broccoli and soybeans
 Orange juice fortified with calcium
 Cereals added with vitamins or minerals
 Plant stanols and sterols added to food
Anthocyanin
Quercetin
Beta-Carotene
Lycopene
• Contains beta-carotene, lutein, quercetins, sulphoraphane,
and indoles
Beta-Carotene
Lycopene
Tomato
Broccoli

Areas covered by Nutraceutical :
All therapeutic areas such as,
1. Anti- Arthritic (Rheumatoid Arthritis)
2. Sleeping disorders
3. Digestion problems
4. Prevention of certain cancers (Colorectal cancer)
5. Osteoporosis
6. Blood pressure
7. Cholesterol lowering (garlic)
8. Neurological disorders (Autism)
9. Diabetes etc..
Pharmaceuticals
• Drug /medicine: “Any chemical substance formulated as single
active ingredient or in combination of other pharmacologically
active substances but packed in a single unit pack as combination
product for use in the treatment, or prevention of disease”.
• Medical use under a physician's supervision
• Subject to Food And Drugs Administration approval
• Prescription from a certified doctor for purchase
• Works on symptoms on the particular part or whole body, giving
immediate effect / results at the cost of side effects (sweating,
yellowish urine, body heat, head ache or itching)
Advantages of Nutraceuticals over
Pharmaceuticals
Pharmaceuticals work only after the onset
of diseases.
Nutraceuticals and functional foods plays
important roles in Retarding prevention and
Progression of Diseases
Offer Effective Risk Factor Modification
in those with existing diseases.
Prevention is always Better than Cure.
Nutraceuticals help in Prevention.

Conclusion
 Nutraceuticals may be beneficial to our health but we are still
learning about their benefits and possible harmful effects.
 Government regulatory bodies also face challenges in this new
category of health products, which lies between foods and
drugs.
 Health professional , Nutritionists and regulatory toxicologist
should strategically work together to plan appropriate
regulation to provide ultimate health and therapeutic benefit to
mankind.
