MAKING CONNECTIONS STRATEGIES
 Present the problem(i.e. dot cards, ten frame,
models, written)
 Record all students answers in upper right
 Use safe hand signals
 Ask to hear and record their thinking for every
answer
 Allow students to embrace their mistakes and
change their thinking with the help of others
 Once the class has agreed on the “correct”
answer, pose the next level of the problem set

1. Get in grade level groups
2. Count off in your groups 1-4
3. Gather in group number in a quiet
place, read the background page for
your group number lesson
4. Choose any one of the boxes for the
string you will share
5. As a group, fill out the four-square
planning sheet
6. Each group decide how you want to
present your lesson to the remaining
groups

Number talks instructional strategy November 3 Staff Development Day

Provide appropriate wait time for the majority of the students to access the problem 3. Accept, respect, and consider all answers 4. Encourage student communication throughout the number talk

MAKING CONNECTIONS STRATEGIES  Present the problem(i.e. dot cards, ten frame, models, written)  Record all students answers in upper right  Use safe hand signals  Ask to hear and record their thinking for every answer  Allow students to embrace their mistakes and change their thinking with the help of others  Once the class has agreed on the “correct” answer, pose the next level of the problem set

  • 18. LET’S PRACTICE 1. Get in grade level groups 2. Count off in your groups 1-4 3. Gather in group number in a quiet place, read the background page for your group number lesson 4. Choose any one of the boxes for the string you will share 5. As a group, fill out the four-square planning sheet 6. Each group decide how you want to present your lesson to the remaining groups

  3. Add Jo Boalers video on the importance of thinking about math
  4. Make sure everyone is familiar with these. Let them know you have a link to the classroom posters for them to display for students AND teachers!
  5. If you did nothing else but incorporate Number Talks into your daily or weekly practices, you would empower students to really THINK about numbers and understand how they fit together instead of remembering a bunch of nonsensical algorithms that they can’t remember.
  6. Mental math gives students the ability to build on number relationships to solve problems instead of relying on memorized procedures. How many of you learned another language as young children and then forgot it because you didn’t need it to survive day to day? TTYP – how do you think this strategy will help students learn?   7. Brain research shows that when a problem is easy there is little brain activity but when a problem makes us struggle or make mistakes and have to correct them, our brain fires and create synapses.

  9. Practice hand signals, diagrams and writing math. Ask teachers to observe and note how you are modeling this one.
  10. Let teachers know they have this information on their handouts and can also google more information online and in their books. Watch the video. Note on your PPT when you see evidence of these strategies in the video.
  11. Number Talks are not about making some math problem up on the fly. They are very intentional problems and the progression of those problems are important.
  12. Number talks is perfect for students and teachers to wonder! The best way to start is with practice!
