This document defines and describes MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). It notes that MOOCs are online courses that are open to unlimited participation via the web, and include video lectures, readings, forums for interaction. The document outlines the history of distance learning and emergence of MOOCs in the 2000s. It distinguishes between xMOOCs and cMOOCs and their approaches. It then focuses on the MOOC platform edX, founded by MIT and Harvard, and how it hosts free university courses worldwide. It also describes open edX which allows other institutions to host their own courses using the edX open source software.
Presentation of a JISC research project into e-textbook publishing processes at a university. The context is explained and some lessons-learned are listed.
The university as a hackerspace - Joss Winn - Jisc Digital Festival 2014Jisc
The University of Lincoln has explored opportunities as diverse as the potential of open data, developed a research data infrastructure, nurtured student developers and developed a research-led approach to teaching known as the student as producer, to name a few. However, these projects and initiatives have not been throw away experiments. Rather, they have helped inform the University’s new Digital Education Strategy aimed at meeting the needs and improving the experience of its students and researchers at a time when the idea and purpose of the university is being challenged.
This provides an overview of some of the innovative projects and initiatives the University of Lincoln has undertaken in the past few years and how universities can explore approaches to teaching and research support, while helping inform the institutional mission and strategy. It will also provide an opportunity for managers, learning technologists and teachers to discuss the potential for such an approach at their institution and to share relevant experiences and ideas.

From Planning to Success:How two academic libraries built their Learning Comm...Sheli McHugh
During the planning of a new Learning Commons for The University of Scranton, Sheli McHugh contacted experienced Commons Coordinators, focusing on the experiences of Joe Fennewald and the Penn State Knowledge Commons. Through close consultation, McHugh was able to use Fennewald’s expertise to better develop Scranton’s new collaborative learning space. McHugh and Fennewald will discuss the scalability of building and managing a learning commons, best practices in collaborating with the wealth of experienced Coordinators in Pennsylvania, how different sized institutions can embrace a similar vision to create an innovative space for 21st century education, how to build partnerships with divisions on campus, and how to improve services in an existing Commons based on assessment.
The Clarke Studios Collection in TCD Library: A study in collaboration - Mar...CONUL Conference
Presented at the CONUL Conference, July 2015, Athlone, Ireland by Marta Bustillo, Tim Keefe, Trinity College Dublin.
Abstract
"This paper will discuss the Clarke Stained Glass Studios Collection, a collaborative project between the Library at Trinity College Dublin and the Digital Repository of Ireland. The project is digitising, cataloguing and making accessible to researchers and the wider public the business archives and the designs for stained glass windows of the Clarke Stained Glass Studios, held in the Manuscripts & Archives Research Library at Trinity College Dublin. The collection will be available both through the Digital Collections site at Trinity College Dublin, and through the Digital Repository of Ireland.
The paper will explore the relevance of a research-collection based approach to digitisation of library materials; the value of a digitisation project of this kind for teachers, researchers and the general public; the challenges facing such projects; and how these can be resolved through effective collaborations with internal and external partners. The challenges include issues such as the management of the copyright and orphan works workflow; deciding on an appropriate level of description for the digitised materials; metadata mapping; and promoting the collection to the right audience. The strategies to face those challenges include collaboration with library cataloguers, subject librarians and academics; tapping on the expertise of associated projects such as the DRI; and organising research symposia to promote the digital collection internally and externally. The literature on digital collections projects in university libraries will be reviewed in order to provide an international context to our case study.

VIA THE WEB. IN ADDITION TO TRADITIONAL COURSE MATERIALS SUCH AS
FILMED LECTURES, READINGS, AND PROBLEM SETS, MANY MOOCS PROVIDE
INTERACTIVE USER FORUMS TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY INTERACTIONS BETWEEN
STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, AND TEACHING ASSISTANTS (TAS).
4. HISTORY…
• BEFORE THE DIGITAL AGE, DISTANCE LEARNING APPEARED IN THE FORM OF
CORRESPONDENCE COURSES IN THE 1890S-1920S, AND LATER RADIO AND
TELEVISION BROADCAST OF COURSES AND EARLY FORMS OF E-LEARNING.
TYPICALLY FEWER THAN FIVE PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS WOULD COMPLETE A
COURSE.
• 2000S SAW CHANGES IN ONLINE, OR E-LEARNING AND DISTANCE EDUCATION,
WITH INCREASING ONLINE PRESENCE, OPEN LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, AND
THE DEVELOPMENT OF MOOCS.
5. TYPES OF MOOCS
• XMOOCS- IS THE TYPE OF LEARNING WHERE BY LEARNERS SHARE IDEAS AND
THERE IS ONLY ONE INSTRUCTOR ON THE DISCUSSION.
• CMOOCS- HERE LEARNERS CONTROL THEIR OWN LEARNING AND THEY CREATE
THEIR OWN GOALS. THE LEARNERS ARE NOT ASSESSED OR TESTED, WHETHER
THEY HAVE MET THE OUTCOMES THAT THEY WHERE AIMING AT.
8. EDX…
• IT HOSTS ONLINE UNIVERSITY-LEVEL COURSES IN A WIDE RANGE OF
DISCIPLINES TO A WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE, SOME AT NO CHARGE. IT ALSO
CONDUCTS RESEARCH INTO LEARNING BASED ON HOW PEOPLE USE ITS
PLATFORM.
• EDX WAS FOUNDED BY THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND
HARVARD UNIVERSITY IN MAY 2012.
9. REASON TO CHOOSE THIS
MOOCS
OPEN EDX…
EDX HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AS OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE AND MADE AVAILABLE
TO OTHER INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING THAT WANT TO MAKE SIMILAR
OFFERINGS.
10. CONTINUE…
• OTHER UNIVERSITIES AND EDUCATIONAL CAN HOST COURSES USING THEIR
OWN INSTALLATION OF OPENEDX WITHIN THEIR OWN IT INFRASTRUCTURE OR
BY USING A THIRD-PARTY HOSTING SERVICE.
• OPENEDX AS PART OF ITS COMMITMENT TO ADVANCE CREATIVE TEACHING AND
LEARNING INITIATIVES AND DATA-DRIVEN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH.
