The document provides an overview of a Foundations course session on the book of Revelation. It discusses the context and authorship of Revelation, as well as key terms used. It then examines the nature and genre of Revelation as an apocalyptic prophecy and letter. The document outlines the major sections of Revelation, including the letters to the seven churches, the vision of worship in heaven, and the conflicts described through the seals, trumpets and bowls. It aims to provide historical and theological context for properly interpreting and applying the messages of Revelation.
This is the first of a three part series on the Book of Mark taught by Dr. John Oakes and Robert Carrillo in San Diego for the Church staff of the San Diego Church of Christ February and March, 2015.
Notes to accompany HOW WE GOT THE BIBLE
Many have claimed that the Old Testament contains a number of myths and legends which were created by Jewish writers in the two or three centuries before the time of Christ or soon thereafter. Others would claim that most of the New Testament was written well into the late second century AD by Christian apologists who were creating a Jesus very different from the historical person. They would claim that the gospels are not an eye-witness account at all. Another common claim is that the original writings of the apostles were radically edited by the Catholic Church in the period after the conversion of the Roman Empire, to reflect Catholic doctrine. These people would claim that the doctrines found in the New Testament are very different from the original teachings of Jesus Christ. Still others will claim
that there were additional gospels written by the apostles which were excluded by leaders in the early church because of their bias against certain teachings...

In "Looking at the Big Picture" we look at what life is all about according to the Bible by looking at Jesus, the gospel, the church and the mission of the church. This teaching is the introduction to the gospel series "Growing Deep in the Gospel".
An updated version of the introduction to our gospel series "Growing Deep in the Gospel". In it we look at how Jesus, the Gospel, the Church and the Mission form the basis of the "Big Picture". If we understand the "Big Picture" we will be able to better answer questions like "What does God says life is all about?", "Why did God create me?", "What is the purpose of life?", "What is God's will for me?", and "How do I decide what is important in life?".
Class 1 of a series called the Consummation, a Reformed view of end times or eschatology. This is being taught at Christ Presbyterian Church, 495 Terrell Mill Road, Marietta, GA 30067. This class will be taught at 10am on January 15, 2017.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
2. Written earlier:

3. Understanding the terminology
Eschatology (study, doctrine, teaching about “the end”)
Prophecy (a declaration of what God is saying now
about a situation & what he is going to do about it)
Kingdom of God (the rule/ reign of God)
Rapture (“snatching away” – used x.14)
Millennium (Latin: period of 1000 years - Rev. 20:1-6)
Tribulation (“pressing”: period of intense persecution)
Antichrist (that which is “instead of Christ”; a figure?)
Parousia (“presence”- generally refers to 2nd Coming)
Apocalypse (“unveiling”- ancient name for Revelation)
4. The Nature of the Book of Revelation
The book as an Apocalypse
The book as a Prophecy
The book as a Letter
5. Features of “Apocalyptic”
Revelations (“lifting of the veil”)
Visions (often communicated through angels)
Symbolism (mysterious, cryptic & fantastic)
Pessimism (inc. catastrophic divine intervention)
Rigid determinism (everything preordained)
Dualism (triumph of power of good over evil)
Transcendent (other-worldly)
Non-chronological (…though history will end!)
Finality (radical transformation of cosmos)
Written-form (through Pseudonymity)
6. Other Apocalyptic Texts
“The War Scroll” (Jewish Qumran/ DSS)
“1 Enoch” (OT Pseudepigrapha – lit. “falsely
inscribed” books written 200 BC - 200 AD)
“Apocalypse of Peter” (NT Pseudepigrapha)
“Apocalypse of James” (Gnostic Text)
“Sibylline Oracles” (12 Ancient Greek texts)
“Apocalyptic writings are tracts for
bad times” (Ladd)
7. Methods for interpreting Revelation
Futurist: A Blueprint of the End Times
(Revelation = solely future events)
Historicist: The Road Map of World History
(Revelation = historical)
Preterist: The First Century Church
(“past”) (Revelation = fulfilled already)
Idealist: Eternal Spiritual Principles
(Revelation = symbolic – earthly
events from a heavenly perspective)
8. FALSE: Historical interpretation
Seven ages of Church History:
Ephesus Apostolic Age Pre. 100 CE
Smyrna Age of Persecution 100 to 313
Pergamos Imperial Church Age 313 to 590
Thyatira Age of the Papacy 590 to 1517
Sardis Reformation Age 1517 to 1730
Philadelphia Missionary Age 1730 to 1900
Laodicea Age of Apostasy Modern Church
10. The Promise
“In my Father's house are many rooms; if it
were not so, I would have told you. I am going
there to prepare a place for you. And if I go
and prepare a place for you, I will come
back and take you to be with me that you also
may be where I am.” (John 14:2-3)
“For the Son of Man is going to come in his
Father's glory with his angels, and then he
will reward each person according to what he
has done.” (Matt. 16:27)
11. After he said this, he was taken up before their
very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
They were looking intently up into the sky as he
was going, when suddenly two men dressed in
white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they
said, “why do you stand here looking into the
sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken
from you into heaven, will come back in
the same way you have seen him go into
heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11)
12. Brothers & sisters, we do not want you to be ignorant
about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest,
who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and
rose again and so we believe that God will bring with
Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that
we who are still alive, who are left till the coming
of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who
have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will
come down from heaven, with a loud command,
with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet
call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be
caught up together with them in the clouds to meet
the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord
forever. Therefore encourage each other with these
words…. (contd.)
13. Now, brothers & sisters, about times and dates we
do not need to write to you, for you know very
well that the day of the Lord will come like a
thief in the night. While people are saying,
"Peace and safety," destruction will come on them
suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman,
and they will not escape.
But you, brothers & sisters, are not in darkness that
this day should surprise you like a thief.
(1 Thessalonians 4:13– 5:4)
14. Here’s the problem
“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the
angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”
(Matthew 24:36)
He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times
or dates the Father has set by his own authority.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes
on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and
in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
(Acts 1:7-8)
“So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will
come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
(Matt.24:44)

“This age” “The age to come”
Big question = Continuity vs. Discontinuity?
16. The Big Picture
How we have tried to see it.
Should we be pessimistic?
(“It’s all going to get worse”)
Should we be optimistic?
(“It’s all going to get better”)
Should we be idealistic?
(“It’s not really like we think it is”)
Or should we just not bother?
17. OK, ready for the next slide?

before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and
frightening and very powerful. It had large iron
teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and
trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was
different from all the former beasts, and it had
ten horns. While I was thinking about the horns,
there before me was another horn, a little one,
which came up among them; and three of the first
horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes
like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke
boastfully.”
54. Who/ what is “the beast”?

67. REV. 20:1-6 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven,
having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great
chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the
devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He
threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him,
to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the
thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set
free for a short time.
I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given
authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been
beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of
the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his
image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or
their hands.
They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand
years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the
thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection.
Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first
resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but
they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with
him for a thousand years.

and a thousand years are like a day.”
