ACTS 1

Waiting & Expectation
Waiting for the promise

More about Jesus:
Proof that he’s alive (v.3a)
Teaching about his kingdom (v.3b)
Waiting for his power (vv.4-5)
Hearing his commission (vv.7-8)
Seeing him as Lord (vv.9-11)

Turning to him in prayer (vv. 12-26)
Proof that he’s alive

“After his suffering, he presented
himself to them and gave many
 convincing proofs that he was
 alive.” (cf. 1 Cor. 15:3-8)
   “witnesses of his resurrection”
     (1:22; 4:2, 33; 17:18; 24:21)
Teaching about his kingdom

“He appeared to them over a period
of forty days and spoke about the
 kingdom of God.”
(cf. Daniel 2:44; Isaiah 2:1-5; Ezekiel 7:24ff.
     - Matt.3:17; Mark 1:15; Luke 4:18-19)

“The now & the not yet”
Waiting for his power

On one occasion, while he was eating with
them, he gave them this command: “Do not
leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my
Father promised, which you have heard me
speak about. For John baptized with water,
but in a few days you will be baptized
with the Holy Spirit”… and you will
receive power when the Holy Spirit comes
 on you.

(cf. Luke 24:49; Jn. 14:15-27; 15:26-27; 16:5-16)
Hearing his commission

                       Jerusalem
It is not for you to
                               Judea/ Samaria
  know …

But you will receive
 power…

And you will be my
 witnesses… Ends of the earth
Alternative structure to the book

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes
on you and you will be my witnesses…

In Jerusalem… (2:1-4, 33)

In all Judea & Samaria… (8:14-17)

To the ends of the earth.” Saul (9:17-18)
                             Cornelius (10:44-47)
                             Ephesians (19:1-7)
Seeing him as Lord
After he said this, he was taken up before their
very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
They were looking intently up into the sky as he
was going, when suddenly two men dressed in
white stood beside them. "Men of Galilee," they
said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky?
This same Jesus, who has been taken from you
into heaven, will come back in the same way
you have seen him go into heaven.“
“Jesus Christ is LORD” (2:33-36; 4:18-20, 26; 5:29-31;
 7:56; 9:5; Eph. 1:11, 20-23; Col. 1;15-20; Phil. 2:9-11)
Turning to him in prayer
They all joined together constantly in prayer,
along with the women and Mary the mother of
 Jesus, and with his brothers.
They proposed two men: Joseph…and Matthias.
Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's
heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen
to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left
to go where he belongs." Then they cast lots, and the
lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven
 apostles.
Matthias – the right or wrong choice?

  up to heaven…”
JOHN 14:12-14

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will
do what I have been doing. He will do even greater
things than these, because I am going to the Father.
And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that
the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask
me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
Structure
Three major blocks:
An early miracle …opposition commences
 (3:1-4:31)
                    Summary paragraph #1. (4:32-38)
A major warning …“Ananias & Sapphira”

An ensuing conflict …persecution by Jewish
 (5:17-42) religious hierarchy
What precisely did Jesus do?

A reminder:
“Jesus of Nazareth was a man
accredited by God to you by
 miracles, wonders and signs,
which God did among you through
 him.” (Acts 2:22)
Isaiah 61/ Luke 4
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
      because he has anointed me
to announce good news to the poor.
      He has sent me to
proclaim to the prisoners - freedom
and to the blind - recovery of sight
to release the oppressed – into freedom,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor”

Parable Miracle
What is a miracle?

A “mighty work” ( dunamis )

A “sign” ( semeion )

A “wonder” ( teras )

miracle (faith in) GOD
“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and power (dunamis), and how he went
around doing good and healing all who were
under the power of the devil, because God was
with him.” (Peter in Acts 10:38)

“The reason the Son of God appeared was to
destroy the devil's work.” (John in 1 John 3:8)
So what’s really happening?

The kingdom The kingdom

& is continuing to do so transformation of
  through the Holy Spirit, society.
For the redemption/ trans-
  formation of this world.
Christians - Power to heal?

“Everyone was filled with awe, and
 many wonders and miraculous signs
 were done by the apostles.”
       (Summary by Peter, Acts 2:43)
Remember their experience with Jesus

"When Jesus had called the Twelve together,
he gave them power and authority to drive
out all demons and to cure diseases, and he
sent them out (two by two) to preach the
kingdom of God and to heal the sick...So they
set out and went from village to village,
preaching the gospel and healing people
 everywhere."
     Luke 9:1-6 (cf. Mark 6, Matthew 10)

The “name” of Jesus

Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I
have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of
 Nazareth, walk.“ (3:6)

By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you
see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name
and the faith that comes through him that has given
this complete healing to him, as you can all see. (3:16)
The “name” of Jesus

They had Peter and John brought before them and
began to question them: "By what power or what
name did you do this?“ (4:7)
It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
whom you crucified but whom God raised from the
dead, that this man stands before you healed.
This is 'the stone you builders rejected, which has
  become the cornerstone.'
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no
other name given under heaven by which we must
  be saved.“ (4:10-12)
Further reactions to “the name”
But to stop this thing from "We gave you strict orders not
spreading any further among to teach in this name," he
the people, we must warn said. "Yet you have filled
these men to speak no Jerusalem with your teaching

                                been counted worthy of
                                suffering disgrace for the
