How Responsive Web Design Works
It's no secret that more and more people are utilizing their mobile devices to access the internet instead
of or in addition to desktop PCs. Worldwide, there are actually close to 7 billion mobile users. (For
perspective, there are 7.8 billion people on the planet right now. That's a lot of activity on the go.)
For marketers like us, however, what they're doing on those mobile devices is even more appel Prior to
making an in-person purchase, 40% of buyers investigate using a mobile device. More than half of
consumers regularly use their cellphones to make purchases, and 55% do so after discovering things on
social media. Because of this, businesses with flexible websites generate more leads and continue to
have a competitive advantage over those without. No cost workbook:
What is responsive web design?
Responsive web design is now a need if you want to increase brand recognition, diversity your user
experience (UX), and increase site visitor conversion.
Additionally, it saves your company significant time. You simply cannot create distinct websites for every
possible device that your users might use, let alone emerging technology. For a pleasurable experience
on both current and future devices, responsive web design makes sure your website is compatible with
all screens and devices.
Let's explore the modern significance of responsive design in more detail. upkeep of software

Why Responsive Web Design is Important
Depending on their qualifications, web developers may take a variety of positions. A team of individuals
may be required to develop and complete a sophisticated project's website. The following people might
be on that web development team:
How to Make a Responsive Web Design
The first concepts and ideas for a website are Responsive Website Design developed by a user interface
(UI) developer. They achieve this by putting an emphasis on primary navigation, branding, style, and
color. To build an interactive website, UI developers combine functional and aesthetic design elements.
They are able to convert consumer demands for website functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics into
practical recommendations.
Responsive Web Design Best Practices

HighEdWeb 2017 - Unbundle Your Institution: Building a Web EcosystemEric Sembrat
Stop me if you have heard queries like these before:
Why am I using {Product X} to build a {Task Y} website?
Why am I rebuilding {Product X} to act like {Product Y}?
Why can’t this {organizational asset} be flexible for {Product Y} instead of just {Product X}?
Questions like these highlight an issue we face more in our day-to-day work in the ever-evolving web: content management system tunnel vision. Sometimes, our organization gets fixated on a particular platform or content management system, even when alternatives and successors exist. And over time, this stagnation hinders growth, expansion, trends, technologies, and eventually even adoption.
In this presentation, I will cover the value of creating a web system ecosystem in your institution, department, unit, or organization. I'll cover:
On-Campus CMS Usage Today - Discussion on scenarios where a CMS is being reconfigured to meet a demand it wasn’t meant to do, and the fallout from said reconfiguration. Why this approach is expensive in the long haul.
What is a Web CMS Ecosytem? - Discussion on a different look at a system, where CMSs are provisioned and recommended for uses and have affordances and tradeoffs.
Change the Community Mindset - Let’s consider the growth, explosion, and fall of CMS systems and stay on top of trends, platforms, and best-practices.
Exploring Ecosystem Adoption- Discussion on changing mindsets, running pilot studies, experimentation, exploration, and research to determine organizational web makeup, goals, needs, and expectations.
Angle Your Institutional Assets - Discussion on side-effects of this move, which may include CMS-agnostic branding and style guides, flexible and scalable plugins and campus application integrations for each system, and pain-minimized migration paths between services and applications.
January 2017 - WPCampus Online - Learning from Drupal: Implementing WordPress...Eric Sembrat
A high-level discussion of how WordPress has incorporated itself into a Drupal-centric campus for web development. Let’s chat about how to leverage WordPress and its strengths with a pre-established CMS and culture, how to build trust and value in WordPress, and the benefits and challenges that WordPress brings to an established CMS campus environment.
The goals of this session are to:
educate on a Drupal CMS environment and its pros/cons.
evaluate Drupal challenges and where WordPress fits this need.
present a case study on how WordPress was implemented.
challenges, issues, and considerations on incorporating WordPress into an already-established web environment.
future directions to consider for WP usage and initiatives.
October 2016 - edUi - Save Us, Self Service!Eric Sembrat
This session will cover Georgia Tech’s exploration, selection, development, and processes behind Professional Web Presence, a self-hosted and self-maintained WordPress Multisite hosting over 350 faculty and staff websites maintained by over 700 campus accounts (as of March 2016).
This session will detail:
The exploration process – What issue are we solving? Why solve this issue? What do websites across campuses look like?
The evaluation and selection – What systems exist to serve this need? Pros and cons of each? What led to our selection? How do you decide?
Develop, and develop some more – What is needed for a rollout? A phase one? Phase two? Long-term growth and feature-sets? What tools exist to aid this scaffolding? What can the community provide?
Processes and onboarding – How do you bring in community? Build in comfort?
Low-level PHP or web development knowledge is not mandatory for this session.
What you’ll learn:
What opportunities Self-Service web gives your smaller, independent, research units on campus
How to initialize a project to kickstart self-service tools
What directions to go in to help scaffold development of your self-service assets (themes, modules), if you're not a subject matter expert in all things code
What we've seen from self-service, adoption, and hesitation
Opportunities in self-service for brand compliance, brand flexibility, and customization
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

13. Web Development 101
Most organizations, campuses, and
institutions now leverage content
management systems for building and
maintaining websites.
14. What does Open
Source Mean?
Open Source just means that the product is
freely developed, distributed, and supported
by its community.
It does not imply any security issues,
vulnerabilities, or inadequacies.
Much of higher education uses open source
for web development.
15. Just Because It’s Free…
The cost, rather than being on the product,
is in the users supporting and building
specific content for the system.
Most campuses (like Georgia Tech) open up
work created for the system to all of
campus and beyond.
18. That Being Said…
Our goal, then, is to make due with what
services and features (on- and off-campus)
we have!
But before then, let’s consider a few things
to consider when building a website.
19. 3 Main Points
1. Write for your audiences.
2. Do not reinvent the wheel unless necessary.
3. Organically organize your content.
20. Who is your audience?
The primary purchase of your website is to
appeal to your expected visitors and browsers.
This allows you to shape and mold your website
around those expected use-cases.
21. Who are your audiences
for your event websites?
Question!
22. Audience
Keep in mind your key audiences (visitors) who
will be visiting your website.
All of your text, menu links, and photos should
be easy to understand and relate to the
website’s purpose.
Keep acronyms, institute lingo, and technical
gibberish to a minimum.
23. Writing for Audiences
Keep in mind the mobile and
tablet audience.
These audiences account
for 20-30% of your traffic.
24. Writing for Audiences
Keeping mind how small these screens are for
reading, it’s good practice to keep your content
concise.
Rely on standard methods of separating content
(in-page links, menu organization) over long and
text-heavy pages.
25. Resist Reinventing
Remember that organization-provided web tools
and resources are your best friend.
Creating a custom theme or website layout is
usually not an efficient usage of time.
Most of your end-users will never complain
about things being ‘too similar’.
26.
27.
28. Organic Organization
It is imperative to structure your menu and page
content to be easy to understand.
In addition, don’t be afraid to spread out content
between numerous pages. Remember to link
where needed.
38. Where to Begin?
1. Create a list of pages for your website.
2. Organize those pages into structured menus.
3. Begin writing content.
39. Determining Pages
Think about what content you want to give out
to your end-users on your website.
You should ideally have one page for each
chunk of content on your website.
40. Determining Pages
Let’s consider a web development event:

41. Creating Menus
Once you have your list of pages, creating
menus are as easy as stacking them under one-
another.
Common ways of doing this are:
1) Sticky notes.
2) Excel spreadsheet.
3) Whiteboard.

44. Writing Content
Creating content (text, photos, videos) for your
pages.
A few key pointers for building attractive and
engaging content.
50. Please Do Not
• Use tables to structure sidebars, content.
• Use unexpected color combinations
• Use super small/undersized photos.
• Use photos without providing ‘alt text’.
• Use ‘click here’ link text.
56. WordPress Websites

57. SEO
For Search Engine Optimization (SEO), most
content management systems come with many
tools out-of-the-box to help.
Note that your content determine your SEO
ranking above almost all other attributes.
However, plugins do exist for your website
system of choice to help.
58. Google Docs/Forms
Need to get a simple form out there?
Google Forms (part of Google Docs) is free,
allows for exporting responses to a
spreadsheet, and is mobile-friendly.
Also worth noting that the Google Docs suite
(docs, sheets) are great for collaborative
working.
59. Google Drive
If you need to share a folder between
participants, Google Drive works flawlessly.
And it also works out-of-the-box with Google
Docs/Forms products as well.
60. Google Analytics
The forefront in visitor, search tracking and
statistics.
Key for determining:
1. How visitors are getting to your website.
2. Where visitors are browsing to.
3. Time-sensitive traffic flows.
63. Eventbrite
Eventbrite is the easiest way to manage tickets,
registration for a (free, paid) event.
Eventbrite also allows hassle-free attendee
exports.
64. YouTube
Use YouTube whenever possible for video.
Benefits:
1.) Captioning (legal requirement).
2.) Cross-platform compatibility.
3.) Ease of use, upload, embed.
65. AMAC
Need videos captioned or transcribed to meet
legal accessibility compliance?
AMAC ( http://amacusg.org/ ) provides low-cost
accurate captioning to University of Georgia
institutions.
66. Trello (project mgmt.)
Need help keeping ahead of deadlines, projects,
tasks, and deliverables for your event?
