Editor's Notes
Thank you for joining us for an introduction to Novell Virtualization and Consolidation.
Data center managers face a growing list of IT service challenges. They must: Improve service levels to support company-wide initiatives. They must also control data center energy costs which are going through the roof, and deal with space limitations for servers and cooling systems. IT must get more from their current and future technology investments. --CPU utilization in the data center is between 5 and 20%. Senior management is no longer willing to throw more hardware at the problem. It has also become apparent to everyone that IT administrators are investing too much in purchasing, learning and using disjointed systems management tools. IT is also being told to manage costs while ensuring high performance, security and availability. As if these challenges weren't enough, they must also answer to a growing contingent of internal and external auditors.
One technology that has been getting a lot of attention these days is virtualization, in particular x86 server virtualization. People are interested in this type of virtualization because it holds the promise of dramatically improving the utilization of the commodity Intel based hardware that they had previously deployed for the horizontal scaling of their modern enterprise. With virtualization, the operating system role is broken into distinct pieces: A host component, to get the hardware running and to host virtual machines. Virtual machines, as isolated software containers that can run its own operating systems and applications In essence, virtualization lets you transform hardware into software. Multiple virtual machines share hardware resources without interfering with each other so that you can safely run several operating systems and applications at the same time on a single computer. As a result, Virtualization encourages organizations to see the data center not as a collection of servers, but as a set of portable workload units – data, applications and operating systems that reside on a physical or virtual host
Novell is the only virtualization vendor that provides a complete infrastructure for virtualization, workload migration, and workload life-cyle management from one source: Novell's virtualization host platform based on SLES and leading open source hypervisors SUSE Linux Enterprise Server as the perfect guest operating system guest Novell Virtual Appliances Virtual infrastructure mangement and automation with PlateSpin Orchestrate Platespin migration and workload management tools
When thinking about these challenges, we think it's important to try and simplify the problem as much as possible. Mixed IT environments are complex, but it's possible to radically simplify the discussion when we can talk about managing workloads. When managing a data center, it's helpful to escape the paradigm of thinking about servers, operating systems, applications, and virtual machines. Instead, we can think about a workload as being the fusion of an application with the middleware and operating system components that best support it. Fundamentally, a workload is the basic component of all IT services, the simplest entity that can actually do something. We think this application-centric view is the future of enterprise computing. Once we are thinking about workloads, there's no real need to distinguish whether it is physical or virtual. The decision of how to run the workload doesn't really impact what the workload does, what it's basic needs are, and how it is used. A workload requires computing, storage, and likely network capacity to run, and it shouldn't know or care whether those resources are physical or virtual.
Anxious to reap the full benefits of virtualization and under pressure to rein in costs? Avoid the “leap before you look” scenario! Virtualizing all at once is bound to cause unforeseen problems. Take small steps first: Monitor resulting performance and management issues, and then move on to more virtualization opportunities. Move physical workloads into virtual machines and test those VMs with minimal downtime and risk of failure Use an integrated suite of tools for virtualization management and automation
Gaining a thorough understanding of server workload is a critical first step to determining which applications should be virtualized. The best candidates for virtualization are applications running on web, infrastructure or application servers. However, applications with high performance sensitivity or very high I/O requirements would not do well in a virtualized environment. Gather detailed data for all hardware and software assets across the data center and analyze workload utilization to develop optimal server consolidation plans. Then use the server utilization data collected to generate a hardware utilization report that identifies workload and resource mismatches such as under- or over-utilized servers. Analyze the complete workload lifecycle. Analyzing workloads at a single point in time is not particularly helpful since workloads can vary drastically by time of day, season, or other variables. Record utilization data over a significant time period such as a financial quarter end to ensure that all ebbs and flows in resource utilization are captured accurately. You can then develop a workload profile that provides a clear picture of server utilization trends and anomalies in CPU, disk, memory and network utilization rates. This brings consistency and predictability to workload management. It also reveals the necessary trend analysis data to automate provisioning and capacity planning.
Successful data center initiatives such as server consolidation and disaster recovery require upfront planning and analysis to ensure a maximum return on investment. PlateSpin PowerRecon is an advanced analysis and planning solution that takes the guesswork out of complex server consolidation, disaster recovery, capacity planning, asset management and green data center initiatives. PlateSpin PowerRecon provides intelligence, visual analysis and forecasting for optimizing the data center by collecting hardware, software and services inventory for all server workloads with no manual effort. PowerRecon remotely gathers workload utilization statistics for a clear and concise picture of the server workloads running in the data center and how their resources are being used.
PowerRecon also provides powerful virtual infrastructure management features to help organizations monitor and manage the growth of virtual machines, avoid virtual infrastructure sprawl and automate IT chargeback for virtual resources. PowerRecon provides analysis and planning for: * Server Consolidation * Consolidated Recovery * Green Computing * Data Center Optimization * Capacity Profiling & Planning * Asset Management * IT Chargeback * Virtual Infrastructure Management The Value Proposition * Collect inventory and utilization data across thousands of servers * Determine the optimal fit between server resources and workloads * Analyze power and cooling costs for green computing initiatives * Accelerate data center projects by generating executable plans * Manage virtual infrastructure growth on an ongoing basis * Chargeback to business units based on resource allocation & usage
Over the years servers have been deployed for single workloads with typical utilization rates of 20% or less – this has led to considerable server sprawl and inefficiencies in operations. Savings can be gained by reducing the physical number of servers to manage – updating systems takes personnel time and if systems go unmanaged the data center could be at risk. Data backup on multiple servers with disparate workloads and operating systems is time consuming and expensive Heat created by servers requires another 125% more electricity for cooling. The average server today consumes 4 times as much power as 10 years ago. Servers use about 30% of their peak electricity consumption while sitting idle Growth of data center energy spending far outpaces the rate at which IT budgets grow. Using virtualization solutions from Novell to consolidate all of your server applications onto a single physical server has many benefits, including: * Increased server utilization * Lower server admin, maintenance and energy costs * Reduced software and hardware costs * Reduced complexity * A smaller data center footprint with no reduction in scalability
PlateSpin PowerConvert is a powerful enterprise-ready workload portability and protection solution that optimizes the data center by streaming server workloads over the network between physical servers, virtual hosts and image archives. PowerConvert remotely decouples workloads from the underlying server hardware and streams them to and from any physical or virtual host with a simple drag and drop PlateSpin PowerConvert empowers enterprises to manage and optimize the data center by migrating server workloads over the network between physical servers, virtual hosts and image archives. The Value Proposition Migrate and protect workloads regardless of platform or virtual host Drag and drop workloads across physical and virtual hosts Reduce risk with automated planning, migration and live testing Improve the speed and quality of data center initiatives Use virtualization as a cost-effective disaster recovery platform Augment existing recovery plans with efficient imaging support
The benefits of a successful server consolidation project include the retirement of old or underutilized hardware, savings in floor space and power consumption and an overall reduction in total cost of ownership. However, successful consolidation initiatives often require considerable upfront planning, time and effort. PlateSpin PowerConvert, combined with PowerRecon, allows organizations to perform complete end-to-end server consolidations faster and easier than ever before. PlateSpin accelerates the consolidation process by completely automating the capacity planning and migration phases of a consolidation project. The cornerstone of PlateSpin’s server consolidation solution is its patent-pending OS Portability technology which decouples data, applications and operating systems from the underlying hardware and automatically streams them to any physical or virtual platform. By allowing the migration of physical servers to virtual machines or blade servers with a simple drag and drop, PlateSpin helps organizations realize an up to 50 to 1 savings in time and effort for server consolidations.
Data center virtualization requires a versatile, reliable, high-performance operating system. SLES 10 is the best engineered, lowest costs, most interoperable platform for enterprise computing. It also offers virtualization capabilities like no other OS. The Xen hypervisor is integrated with the kernel and both physical and virtual drivers providing optimal performance of virtual workloads, excellent interoperability and a high level of stability. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 is a mature operating system that supports a full-range of services such as embedded storage, failover, native directory integration and standards-based management and monitoring. It's also highly predictable and reliable, with advanced security and robust high-availability features. SLES 10 offer both paravirtualization and full virtualization. Paravirtualization results in minimal performance degadation and gives you exceptional scalability.
Novell is in an excellent position to provide world-class solutions to the challenges that broad virtualization deployments bring in terms of requirements for monitoring, management, and deployment of virtual and physical elements that make possible their effective use by IT organizations: Comprehensive management of workloads across physical and virtual boundaries Strong cross-technology support of the various hypervisor technologies (Xen, KVM, Hyper-V and VMware ESX) Powerful enterprise-ready workload portability and protection solution (Platespin). Identifying workloads and combining them into business-critical services as the heart of the agile enterprise. Leverage of open standards and open source, and integration with other management frameworks Strong partnerships Leverage the Microsoft/Novell TCA – Management pack Our management solutions integrate seamlessly with vSphere 4 Jointly go to market with Microsoft, Vmware, Dell, etc.
Virtualization is heralded for reducing server sprawl and optimizing utilization, yet deployed incorrectly, it can wreak havoc on a business. With virtualization, organizations have the power to move resources in an instant—but the wrong move can actually hinder user performance and increase management costs. As heterogeneous data centers become more complex, so does the scale of the virtualization project. Managing not only multiple platforms but countless hypervisors, operating systems, and even virtualization tools causes exponential levels of complexity. In addition, virtual machines can rapidly proliferate, leading to poor resource utilization and excessive IT overhead. Case in point: A large educational organization virtualized its entire web front-end. Through virtualization analysis they discovered one site had higher traffic in the early morning while another experienced spikes in the afternoon. By dynamically reallocating resources based on time of day, they were able to reduce their server footprint by 80 percent, hardware costs by 30 percent, and the entire IT budget by 18 percent.
Machine lifecycle management solution in order to manage physical and virtual machine within the data center is key in an agile IT environment: Lifecycle management will allow your business to Create virtual machines, Discovers all of your assets which are located on these machines such as software applications, devices etc. A lifecycle solution will also allow your business to check all machine and software version numbers in order to remain compliant. You will also be able to easily edit your machines' configurations, deploy various services, monitor your systems, and manage and even destroy unwanted machines. By implementing such a solution you will be able to control your costs, remain compliant and align your IT with your business in order to efficiently and rapidly maintain your service level agreements.
And what exactly is Orchestrate? In short, it is the brain behind our data center optimization solution. It automates IT operations so tasks are done consistently and according to policy each time. It keeps an eye on all of your resources and their workloads, and it automatically distributes workloads across multiple devices so that you get maximum performance from your available resources. It automates the provisioning of resources to meet constantly changing needs. PlateSpin Orchestrate is an orchestration engine built to meet the exact requirements of even the most demanding data centers. It combines the following capabilities: Workload Provisioning and Management Automated Performance Optimization Virtual Infrastructure Management PlateSpin Orchestrate does this and more by providing a highly flexible platform for customizing and automating data center and workload management tasks.
PlateSpin Forge is a disaster recovery hardware appliance that provides out-of-the-box protection for server workloads. In the event of production server downtime or a disaster, protected workloads can be rapidly recovered and continue to run on the PlateSpin Forge appliance until they can be restored to the production environment. Available in either a 10 or 25 workload protection model, PlateSpin Forge allows enterprises to cost-effectively match their recovery investment with the size of their data center. The latest version provides SAN integration, support for 64-bit Windows workloads and multiple recovery points for greater flexibility and workload integrity. Where PlateSpin Fits in the Recovery Landscape Traditional recovery infrastructures have failed to keep pace with business requirements. Until now, organizations have had to choose between costly and complex clustering and high-end replication solutions or suboptimal lower-cost alternatives like tape backups that can be slow and cumbersome to test and restore. PlateSpin Forge is the first recovery hardware appliance that leverages virtualization technology to provide a flexible and affordable solution for protecting production workloads. The unique combination of simplicity, ease-of-testing and cost-effectiveness makes PlateSpin Forge ideal for augmenting and extending existing disaster recovery capabilities.
Only Novell has a workload management platform that is capable of managing both physical and virtual resources from a single pane of glass. Going a step further, heterogeneous management systems allow you to seamlessly manage workloads both inside the enterprise (on physical, virtual, or private cloud infrastructure) and outside the firewall on the public cloud. Intelligent Workload Management means your organizational security, policy, monitoring, and configuration management systems move with your workloads, so that no matter where they are running, they are as secure and reliable as any other part of your IT infrastructure.
Novell's vision for an agile and optimized data centre is based on four principles - principles that we believe help ensure that our customers continue to receive value and investment protection, long after their initial purchase: Openness through open source and open standards Integration into existing environments Interoperability as key attribute for heterogeneous environments Best-class heterogeneous management with policy-based workload management and automated life-cycle management Only Novell and PlateSpin can provide the freedom and agility to easily cross physical and virtual infrastructure boundaries, to enable IT to work together and dynamically deliver the services business users need
