2. GOODWIN
Goodwin says that videos are build around songs and uses
the singer as both narrative and character. The singer
often looks directly at camera (involving viewer at home
with the performance)
There are 3 types of relations between songs and videos:
Illustration: The video tells the story of the lyric. Dance is
often used to express the feelings/moods in the song.
Amplification: Video introduces new meanings that do not
contradict with the lyrics but add layer of meaning.
Disjuncture: Little connection between the lyric and video
or where the video contradicts the lyric.
3. VERNALLIS
From Vernallis’s observations, she found out that edits
come much more frequently in music videos than film.
They stand out as disjuncture and the editing has a
rhythmic basis connected to the song and the camera may
move in time with the music.
The rules of continuity editing are broken in order to draw
attention to what is on screen.
Edits may be really obvious to draw attention to
themselves, such as wipes and special effects added and
the speed of the edit is manipulated (speeded up or
slowed down).
A master shot (base track) is frequently used to give video
a structure and jump cuts are often used as well.
4. GOODWIN
The music video I created followed a disjuncture structure (Goodwin)
as we didn’t want to follow the lyrical content and go with an
illustration structure; which was creating a ‘witches brew’, it didn’t
relate to what we was trying to portray. So disjuncture was the
structure that went well with our concept.
The singer (artist), also looked directly at camera (involving viewer at
home with the performance).
VERNALLIS
My music video is a great example that illustrated Vernallis’s ideas.
It has a variation of editing, including slow motion, editing in time
with the beat of the song. We also edited in time with the lyrics also.
The artist Zee, is the main focus of the video and sings throughout.
There are a loads of base tracks as the camera switches back and
forth between scenes and jump cuts were used in the beginning.
Repeated shots were shown of her throughout the video in the
different locations and she also looks directly into the camera.

Which videos was I influenced by and why?
- Jme - 96 FUCKRIES (In terms of setting/location, this
video is a great example of how different urban locations
was used as base tracks within the video.)
What aspect of the video influenced me (editing,
camerawork, visual style)
-Locations & Style ( As a UK Grime artist, JME has
represented this with the mise en scene as he is
surrounded by the the urban, city locations e.g graffiti
walls and central London. This is also shown within his
costume; wearing a snap-back and leather jacket.)
Did I challenge the conventions of the genre of the video?
