2. THEORY:
Vernallis studied editing and camerawork closely in music
videos, She noticed that the edits in music videos were
much more rapid compared to films, and that many stand out
as disjuncture and also that the editing style is more
rhythmic to the to the beats of the song.
3. HOW VERNALLIS THEORY IS
INCORPORATED IN OUR OWN MUSIC
VIDEO:
Vernallis theory is used in our own music videos. When we
edited our music video, we tried to cut each shot to four
beats, so the shot matches in time with the music.
Used several base tracks
Has different shots, and camera angles
Jump shots were used throughout the music video
The use of setting and repetitive images shows that some
shots represent the chorus
4. OBSERVATIONS SHE MADE:
The usual rules of ‘cont inuity’ edit ing are broken in
order to draw attention to what is on screen:
Th is is s omething we s tu ck b y, we d id n ’t wa n t to h a ve th e
same shot over and over again; which is why we filmed in
various locations, and edited contrasting locations together.
We used a variety of editing techniques to make sure our
audience never gets bored, jump cuts, speed changes (slow
motion and fast motion) and also cutting in time with the
lyrics.
By doing this, it made our music look much more interesting,
and it was good too look at visually.
5. OBSERVATIONS SHE MADE:
Edits may be really obvious to draw attention to
themselves, such as wipes and special effects added.
We used a variety of different filters, we saturated the
footage and brightened/ contrasted it too. We added black
and white scenes to some parts of our music video (this is
mostly used when we see the artists friends in the shot,
indicating memories and the past- which is why we put the
recording sign on top of the scene to make it look more like
a home video.
6. OBSERVATIONS SHE MADE:
A master shot (base track) is frequently used to give the
video structure;
This was one of the key things we used, we had several
base tracks (possibly over ten) This made our music video
stand out compared to the rest, the use of different locations
and costumes link with each other, and makes our music
video look incredibly distinctive. The way we arranged our
music video was: we had a different locations for each verse
and the chorus would be the same locations (smoke bombs
and white room)
7. CAMERA MOVEMENT:
We have used a variety for different camera shots,
establishing shots to show were the locations are set ( we
d id n ’t d o mu c h o f th e se, u n fo rtuna tely). We u s e d me d ium
shots, long shots, extreme long shots, close ups, and we
also filmed from high/ low angles.
We tried to used the tripod less as we felt that our music
video was all about movement, so we used handheld/ or on
a fig rig to make our music video more energetic rather than
static.
We have recurring footage of the artists hand (synergy) and
we tried to put these shots in the beginning, middle, and the
end of the music video.
