Incubus - Drive Analysis
1. Kim Brenchley – Incubus “Drive” analysis
2286004572002971800457200In the music video, “Drive” by Incubus it starts of in a drawing form. We learn that there is a intertextual reference to the drawing by Escher’s “drawing hands”. I have interpreted this with
some of the lyrics; “And I can't help but ask myself how much I let the fear take the wheel and steer” this shows that the song is about how people let fear or other people make their decisions and with this picture the hand creates the other hand, showing that they rely on other people. The song uses a different metaphor, instead of playing on the title, “drive” where you expect cars or something car related; they use a more visual approach.
The paper and the scribbling again relates to the lyrics in how they can’t make decisions easily. There is a strong sense that this video is a performance-based video as you see the band perform together in traditional way, like on a stage. Then there is them sitting down which adds variety to the video. The focus is mainly on the lead singer, this adds to the rock band persona, as when a band performs you mainly look at the person who is singing. However the guitarist does add to the singing when he sings on certain words, this helps emphasize the songs crucial point possibly.
0132715
During the instrumental the camera angles turn upside down which could show that they are taking a new direction in their lives. Also it is shaped like an arrow, which again shows a new direction or path. The colours though out the video are neutral tones; this goes with the genre of the music, which is quite mellow and laid back.
Within the camera shots and editing there are a lot of zooms which fit in well with the lead singers longer held notes. The low angle shots of singer backs up the idea the attention is mainly focus there. The edits aren’t quick but in keeping with the time of the mellow music.
