No One Undersand Me Short Story
No one undersands me...My mind is flooded with endless thoughts and emotions. It's a ripple affect as one drops it creates more and more but the
difference is: It's an endless ripple. Each day I think of the same idle or a new one, I try to compress it as a way to opress the notion of it, however, my
mind becomes crowded with more ideations. It's like a demon, one that I created, that revolves around my eyes. I lost sight because of how pitch
black it is and my eyes soon became adapted to it. My eyes follow anything that moves around my mind, my legs begin to walk to running, and without
sending a signal my hands begin to reach for that motion. I find myself soon enough chasing what's been running away from me, but what can it be? In
reality, it's my sanity full of vanity but in actuality it's just my insanity... But what's... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The question that emerged: Why don't I use my ears? I lost that sense from using my voice hiding to the screeching of my mind telling me what to
do...I tried to escape that one voice by overriding it with my own, yet I lost that fight soon enough as well... My ears became deaf soon enough. I
began to envision questions before my blinded eyes : What do I have left? What I have lost? What am I seeking? Am unconsiously self
destructing? As these questions emerge the one that stands out to me " Have I failed my purpose of living?" I live my life being distand trying to
find the anwser. However, what can I do with eyes blind to the light, ears deaf to my mind, a demon in my mind pulling stringles, a body walking
on its own, and all I have left is emotions, the tangible sense of the world, and the sense to smell the fear I am covered in. But as time passes by I
lose motivation to try... "What can I do with what I have left?" Is the final question that emerges in the end of the day, before I close my eyes and
wake up to cage with time on the

I Can Not Control The World
I am the type of person who likes to be in control. I was self–centered and felt the world should revolve around me and my family which consists of my
husband, Vince, and our boys, Cody and Kyle. In 2008, I learned that I cannot control the world around me; there is a higher being for that, and to
cherish every moment I have with the people I love the most.
This story starts in 2000 when my husband received a job machining race motors in Mooresville, North Carolina. This is 20 miles north of Charlotte
and is considered part of NASCAR country. My family and I packed up our belongings and moved on to a new adventure, leaving the rest of our family
behind. We finally arrived in November of 2000 and I was just amazed at the fall... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My favorite part of North Carolina were the azalea bushes. The bushes were in just about every yard and the colors were beautiful with blooms that
totally covered the bush with hot pink, light pink, and white. The way the bushes were shaped and the colors reminded me of gumballs.
Then my world came crashing down. My husband and I were watching TV one evening when he turned to me and said, "I want to move back to Texas."
"What for?" I asked. "I'm home sick. I want to be closer to my mom and to take care of her since Bert has passed away she is by herself now." He said.
I was shocked. I said, "No! I love it here."
Vince looked exasperated with me and said, "Don't you want to be closer to your mom? She is not getting any younger either."
I told him, "My mom is just fine. She can take care of herself."
I know that sounds harsh, but my mom and I are and have always been extremely close. At the time she was living in Bryan–College Station and
working for Texas A&M. She would come down a couple times a year to spend time with us and we would take a whole day and go shopping, or I
would take her to a quaint little town to explore their downtown. On the way to where ever we were going, we would talk about every subject under
the sun. There were times when we were so engrossed in our conversations that we would wind up getting lost. Mom is a great listener and a
wonderful grandma. I want to be a grandma

Why The Wicked Don 't Care About Preferences
It was once said that since outer space was practically infinite, there was no way that alternative universes couldn't exist. They say that's where we
came from, there are endless theories from all types of viewpoints. Some call us godsends, some call us monsters. We call ourselves people. We
didn't mean for it to happen, most of us would have prefered if it didn't. The wicked don't care about preferences, they don't care about anything
besides themselves. They weren't thinking of anyone but themselves when they cast that spell, they weren't thinking on anyone but themselves when
they sent a world that didn't belong to them into panic. It's been years since we arrived and so much has changed. Those of us that came over didn't
age, how could animations age? We were given human personas to help blend in, some of us tried to construct lives knowing that we may never
reach home again but, ultimately we gave up. It's rather demotivating when you have to watch the people you care about grow older while you never
age. They changed our names, most of us. I'm Cindy now, Mickey got turned into Mick. They said that it's better this way so we don't attract
unwanted attention to ourselves. That's not hard, the country that we're trapped in has been reduced to rubble because of our villains and the most
magical place on Earth is the hell that we're forced to stay in. We got turned into targets, we've been branded as social outcasts and freaks, monsters;
the marks on our forearms prove

Summary Of Me Talk Pretty One Day
In David Sedairs' Short story, Me Talk Pretty One Day, the main point of this story is no matter where you're from, or where you are in life, when
learning a new language for the first time it can be an intimidating journey for anyone. I think for David and his classmates this was frightening, and
exciting, but also exhilarating. No one likes to be subject to the dreadful words and actions that the teacher exhibited, while not fully understanding
what was going on or being said in the class. I can imagine how scary this could be for a student in a new country.
My audience is still anyone looking to travel abroad and learn a foreign language.
Challenges for this demographic is going to be that this is for one specific encounter, and there is only this one account to base this on.
David Sedaris talks about his account when he moved to France to learn French and how his fear went beyond the classroom when doing everyday
things. One way this key point supports the story is when David Sedaris talks about how he would avoid going into the grocery stores or coffee
shops because he was afraid he would have to speak French. "My fear and discomfort crept beyond the borders of the classroom and accompanied me
out onto the wide boulevards. Stopping for a coffee, asking directions, depositing money in my bank account: these things were out of the question, as
they involved having to speak. "(Sedaris, 2000).
This supports his goal because he describes in detail the specific accounts he had with the locals and with his teacher in the classroom. I agree with
his accounts he had while in France because he tells his story with vivid detail and encounters he had with the locals. He talks about how the teacher
would tell him that she hated him and how he would take this personally, although this was happening with every student. Everyone in the class was
subject to the mean and vulgar things that the teacher would do. He states that he is not alone and could seek comfort from his classmates as they
were also having the same experience. This is supported by his account with his classmates and the conversations they would have in the hallways.
Figuring out how to find his place among the younger generation in his class by

As time passes by, children grow up, and reach a point where they have to make decisions for their future. Most of them will go to college, but it is
their choice to make a big jump to success or have a bad attitude to everything and waste the rest of their lives. I, a seventeen–year–old student, was
stuck in a world of choices, and did not know which way to go. Since I was not a very good student at school, everybody advised me to enroll in an
easy–to–get–admitted–to college in Vietnam. As a stubborn girl, I objected to that, and made a big decision that surprised all of them: to apply for the
APU scholarship to study abroad.
When deciding to apply for the scholarship offered by APU, I have met a number of challenges. My first and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I also learnt that with some efforts and determination, anything is possible.
During the time I was preparing for the APU tuition reduction scholarship, I found some difficulties in completing the application, writing essays, and
preparing for the interview. Therefore, getting a part–time job in the admission office of APU as an online consultant is what I want to do to help the
candidates like me. I once had a Skype session with a student from APU named Bek, and the session went quite well. He gave me some advice for my
essays, the interview, and some information about part–time jobs for international students. That helped me a lot. Furthermore, as a student studies
about Asia Pacific region, participating in Multicultural events such as Thai Week, and Indonesian Week not only interests me, but also will give me
the chance to understand more about the Asian culture. Besides, since I am partial to performing, singing, and dancing at high school, attending the
Latin American & African Dance Club, and the Chorus Club is a chance I will take to develop my hobbies, and relieve stress after class.
After graduating from APU, I want to stay in Japan, and work for the Vietnam Television Channel Station located in Japan. This will enable me not only
to contribute to my country by updating news about the Vietnamese living in Japan, but also to know more about the Japanese culture, and meet and
interview many special Japanese

A Short Period Of Time Essay
Think of a mother deer raising its fawn, while the fawn is being raised, it is being taught about survival, how to hunt and catch food. In a short period
of time, that fawn is released into the wild on its own, without its mother. The fawn has to rely on its mother 's teachings and also its own instincts,
Animals raise their young to survive on their own by means of hunting and keeping themselves protected, while parents send off their children to
"survive" on their owns by means of motivation, determination and independence. I was raised by my parents and they are "sending me off into the
wild" in a way, since this is my first time away from home and away from them. I feel grown enough to "survive" and I will do my best to make them
proud and use everything they have taught me. I am the fawn, raised by my Mother and taught how to survive. However, my Mom is still holding on,
which isn't necessarily bad but sometimes hinders me on my own journey.
When you are this age it feels like you are stuck in limbo, no longer a child with your parents' by your side but also not an adult yet either. My parents
are relatively strict but are very responsive and support my growth. I understand that my parents ' just want me to succeed and want me to do great
things, but sometimes I feel confliction between my personal goals and what I want to become and who they want me to become and what they want
me to do. It is probably a thing that a lot of us face when going off to college, "you

Comparing One Hundred Years of Solitude and Bless Me...
Magic or Reality in One Hundred Years of Solitude and Bless Me Ultima
In the South American storytelling tradition it is said that humans are possessed of a hearing that goes beyond the ordinary. This special form is the
soul's way of paying attention and learning. The story makers or cantadoras of old spun tales of mystery and symbolism in order to wake the sleeping
soul. They wished to cause it to prick up its ears and listen to the wisdom contained within the telling. These ancient methods evolved naturally into the
writings of contemporary Latin American authors. The blending of fantasy with reality to evoke a mood or emphasize elements of importance became
known as magical realism, and was employed to great effect by Latin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the time of Ultima's death at the end of the story, the owl has taken on great significance in Antonio's life and consequently in the progression of his
understanding. "It was true" states Antonio "that the owl was Ultima's spirit. It had come with Ultima, and as men brought evil to our hills the owl had
hovered over us, protecting us." (Anaya, 256).
Other animals play a magical part in Antonio's story. There is the golden carp, an enchanted fish that Antonio sets out to find. He is inexplicably
drawn toward finding the carp, and communing with it. The golden carp is a representation of the pagan gods that the Catholic Church had set its
edicts against. This prohibition causes Antonio great consternation and internal debate. He wonders if his desire to find the fish is a lessening of his
worthiness in the eyes of the church and in the eyes of God. None the less, he embarks on his quest. He takes a companion with him as his guide.
This is an effective metaphor for the internal struggle facing Antonio in his life at home. Will he embrace the church and become the priest his mother
wishes him to be, or will he instead become as his brothers and father, a wandering, restless spirit? The carp appears and a discussion of its home and
the mermaids that share it ensues between Antonio and

Soft rays of sunlight dance gently across my face leaving patterns in every direction they move. My bedroom walls remind me of you. Days
without you by my side are black and white. Dull. I had no friends until you came back into my life. Our time together was magenta. Peaceful. You
always knew how to draw me to you, even without meaning to. Chilling. The blue sky that one day when we were nine laying down on the grass at
the park, that was the day I first realized I kind of loved you. These same walls we confessed our love and desires. As I lay here in my bed with sheets
you once laid, I feel your presence consume me.
The white stained marble covers every path walked in each direction. Ruptures of laughter comes from a blob of wannabe populars nearby. The scent of
anxiety and burnt hair sweeps past. The slam of a locker from behind startles me.

The location was near the beer hall, yes, the same hall where we'd spent our first night in the town. It wasn't just a beer hall, but rather like a
community center where people would come to socialize. Every Sunday after mass, the village's men would gather there for eating, drinking and
talking. The hall also hosted dances and plays, visiting theater groups, and other festivals that took place in and around our village. To live close to
the hall was entertaining as we could watch the activities across the street. Watching late at night after a dance was over was the best as the older
boys and girls would leave the beer hall and sing and dance their way down the street. It felt like heaven on earth to us, after all we'd been through....

Mama, Erich and I cut some branches off a large pine tree so we could arrange them in a pot of water. That was our Christmas tree. We had no
ornaments or home baked goods to decorate the tree as we had in Jena before the war or when we visited Grandpa's farm. But Mama knitted socks
for us and she placed them under the tree. I had a doll made from potatoes, which had no legs, but Mama knitted tiny socks for my doll anyway.
This made us all laugh. On Christmas Eve, we huddled around our "tree" and exchanged memories about our lives in the city and our visits to
Grandpa's farm. Mama cried and I cried with her. "I loved Grandpa so much," I whimpered. "We all do," Mama said, using her apron to wipe her
tears. "Do you think he is dead, Mama?" Erich asked, always stoic and logical. "Only God knows," Mama replied. I said my little prayer and added,
"God, let Santa come to our house and bring us gifts." Within minutes there was a knock on the door. When Mama opened it, a lady stood in the snow
and handed her a prayer book. The pretty stranger wouldn't come in to warm up, although Mama begged her to do

Having read the story "Me Talk Pretty One Day ", by David Sedaris, reminisced me about my past memories and had the feeling of going back into

Pain into Beauty Essay
Pain into Beauty
People look back on their childhoods in different ways. Some see it as a time of joy and laughter, love and learning. Many feel a bittersweet mixture
of happy nostalgia, and painful moments. Some prefer not to look back at all, seeking only to move forward. Then there are people like me, who
look back in anger, bitterness, and sorrow. It seems that few people enjoy apain–free upbringing. In fact, the very idea of childhood is a fairly new
concept. In the early part of the last century, children were considered miniature adults, and were expected to act that way. Abuse, as defined today,
was ignored and sometimes encouraged. "Spare the rod and spoil the child." Today, abuse is carefully defined and is illegal, but many... Show more

So he turned to an old friend for help. She agreed to raise me, and four years later she and my father married. My new step–mother was now, for all
intents and purposes, my mother. I called her Mommy, and later Mom, and at first all was well.
We moved to Denver, Colorado during my first year of life, into a duplex. It was a very small house, painted a deep blue. It is in this house that my
best memories were made. They are of course very hazy, as I was only three or four, but there are no unhappy times at this point. I was the only child
in my immediate family, and so was doted upon by every auntie and uncle, by every granny and grandpa. I was the little queen of my little world. At
that point in time holidays were the best. I was showered in gifts and clothing, and love. I consider this time, from the age of zero to five, as being the
best years of my life even if they are a bit hazy.
At the age of five I was a vibrant, joyful ball of energy. Everything was an adventure, even breaking my collar bone. I loved my life and my family.
But once again tragedy struck and this time it struck my step–mother. Her mother had been battling lung cancer, and she could no longer fight. My
step–mother was devastated, and I now believe this may have been the beginning of my problems. She began to change, in subtle ways. Her patience
was far less, and nothing I did was right. She cried more often, and would become angry for no

Me Talk Pretty One Day Summary
"Bonne AnnГ©e" by Jean–Pierre BenoГ®t and "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris are memoirs which are very similar and different.
Theme, tone, and character development all help to compare and contrast these memoirs. Both texts have a large amount of these literary devices.
"Bonne AnnГ©e" is about a Haitian child who grows up and learns to love Haiti. He is the narrator of the story. At first, he doesn't want to go back to
Haiti after dictator François Duvalier (Papa Doc) leaves his country or the world. He is told that this will happen soon. As the narrator grows up,
he watches a world cup soccer match: Italy vs. Haiti. This is still in New York, his home from before. Italy, a country that hasn't been scored on for
two years, gets scored on by the Haitians in the match. Even though Haiti loses, the narrator feels proud for his natal country. In "Me Talk Pretty One
Day", the narrator tries to learn French in Paris. He is given a very strict teacher who hates everyone in the class, especially him. At the end, though,
all is revealed. The narrator can perfectly understand the teacher. The theme of both these texts is similar and different. In "Bonne AnnГ©e", one quote
is this: "Perhaps the natal pull is stronger than it seems." (BenoГ®t 36). One theme of this story is that homeland is very important. In "Me Talk Pretty
One Day", though, there is a different theme. "The teacher proceeded to belittle everyone from German Eva, who hated laziness, to Japanese Yukari,

Humans are judgmental creatures. One of our most significant philosophy is "not judging a book by its cover", which examines our habit to judge.
We did not purposely develop this questionable characteristic; we seem to have been with this evolutionary trait. We judge everything as a survival
instinct to protect ourselves; the perception we create from our personal opinions determine whether we believe something is friendly or foe. As with
everything, we judge ourselves, and we tend to be our biggest critic. We constantly judge ourselves, but why? People have referred to this type of
judgement as self–esteem. Self–esteem is measured by how positive we view ourselves: the more positive our perception of our self, the higher our

We typically achieved this happiness by winning, being successful, or accomplishing an objective. However, not everyone is able achieve happiness by
themselves. Pharmaceutical companies challenged this problem and developed anti–depressants to counteract the feeling of depression and dismay and
enhance happiness in an individual. In Watters' "The Mega–Marketing of Depression of Japan" he examines how pharmaceutical companies created
SSRIs, anti–depressants, on the basis to counteract depression in the mind. "Unbalanced serotonin levels have been linked with people who suffer
from depression; SSRIs work by maintaining a balance in serotonin levels in you r brain."(Watters 529). Even though the scientific evidence loosely
supported the effectiveness of SSRIs, the people of Japan and around the globe were convinced of the benefits of using them. The anti–depressant
market was seen as a multi–billion dollar market; the ability to relieve sadness and depression to promote a happy, healthy lifestyle with a pill easily
appeals to humanity's pursuit of happiness. The need to fulfill our happiness was so great that we created our own, our "synthetic happiness" in the
form a pill. In addition to the presence of our "synthetic happiness", research has shown that our body naturally instills a feeling of happiness within our
minds. In Gilbert's "Immune to Reality", he explains that our mind falsely constructs positive

One of Me Oblivious and vulnerable, I enthusiastically flaunted out into the depths of denial as a young, flourishing child. My mother and father had

individuals had soared outwards from Shanghai, China. Home was left behind in the dust and the least of their concerns–will they ever see them again?

Heraclitus once stated, "Change is the only constant in life." Since everything is eventually going to change, it is incorrect to assume that societal
values, such as the GenMe's value of self –esteem, will be fixated in the society for the future generations. In Ethan Watters' "The Mega–Marketing of
Depression in Japan," Watters demonstrates the idea of how capitalism and advertisements make one selfish and exploit the idea of happiness. Jean
Twenge's "An Army of One: Me," shows how even parents can have an underlying level of selfishness and in order for children to stop naively

In order to change for improvement, a person needs to cultivate self –awareness. It is important to understand that when people introduce ideas to
others, there is an underlying sense of selfishness motivating this action. While GenMe can reverse its course, it would be better for GenMe to
change completely as that would allow for GenMe to not be selfish, like the Boomers. When the Boomers proposed ideas to GenMe, GenMe accepted

will allow GenMe to improve on its weaknesses, envision how certain decisions can affect one, and become less self–interested. However, due to
societal norms and the way in which the brain works, one can tend to believe that self –awareness can decrease self –absorbance and hurt one's own

An Army Of One : Me By Jean Twenge
In a world that continues to advance technologically machines titled "sociable robots" acquire life–like characteristics once exclusive to humans. They
are able to express artificial emotions that seem real to the user. In "Alone Together" by Sherry Turkle we see how sociable robots interact with
children. They begin to feel emotions that were once exclusive to human interaction. In the narrative "An Army of One: Me" by Jean Twenge we see
how prominent the generation gap is. Those under the age of thirty–five tend to focus more on themselves and making sure they feel worthy. Twenge
appropriately titles this generation as "Generation Me," highlighting the fact that boosts of "self–esteem" leads to a rise in individualistic focus. Parents
expose their children to toys that industries manufacture to fill the emotional needs children have at a young age. This consequently decreases the
need for human interaction. As technology develops and become more "alive," researchers are able to find what children desire and are able to give
those desires to them in a toy. These new toys shape how children think and grow, directly affecting them for their entire lives. By changing the notions
of aliveness, sociable robots "cultivate" behaviors representative of Generation Me by manipulating values important to one's well–being through their
expression of life–like emotions and behaviors. Adults are able to mold the behaviors of their children through the use of an external factor.

Firstly, marketers and advertisers know you better than you do. Wiley, the writer who wrote the book "people analytic in the era of big data", once

every photo you have uploaded will be known by the company, and although that information seems disorderly and unsystematic for you it is still

Beginning with an inability to function, an impairment in personality must be present in either identity or self–direction. A person exhibiting an
impairment in identity might criticize himself excessively, have deep and troubling experiences of emptiness or possibly even experience dissociative
states under extreme stress. A person experiencing an impairment with self–direction would exhibit signs of inability to follow through or possibly
even set goals, and have no drive in regards to career plans. The Diagnostic criteria for this disorder demand that 5 of 9 criteria are met. Often a person
with this disorder will exhibit signs of suicidal tendencies or self–mutilation. Other symptoms may include, but are not limited to reacting in advance to
a possibility of abandonment. The mere thought of losing a relationship or a person who is viewed in some way as a caretaker is enough to cause
significant changes in their self–image and therefore their behavior. These people are extremely sensitive to changes in their environment, and it does
not matter if those changes are announced in advance or sprung by surprise. Extreme irritability and anxiety can cause instability as well. Often issues
controlling anger and temper tantrums become extremely problematic in keeping stability in home and work environments. Most of the time this issue

feel bad and to embarrass them in front of other students. This is similar to the teacher in the story because she got mad and threw things to her
students if they couldn't understand french or couldn't answer her question. This story shows that there are some bad people that like to make other

Most Influential Person Analysis
The single most influential person in my life is someone I have only seen twice in the past year: my father. He has given me more than any other

things because he never had them.
My father has been in and out of prison since April 29th, 2011. He gave me an understanding of adult life at far too young an age, and he left me

Analysis Of Jean Twenge's An Army Of One : Me
In the short piece, "An Army of One: Me," written by Jean Twenge, there is an issue that is not only evident in today's society, but in one that started
well before the contemporary times. We relate these matters to the generation of baby boomers and also currently labeled, Generation Me. Generation
Me is often criticized in having little to no self–esteem. Because of the prior generations, the word self–esteem seems to be brought up quite often in
this passage. There has been a strong focus on mental health of a child growing through school and seems to be affecting their outcome as well as
ability to learn. We live in a world where there is a push for the better of people, more so the consiouness of idividuality. Twenge inserts a lyric by
Whitney Houton stating, "learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all time (756)." Twenge inserts this quote because of the issue brught up in
the world today, the lack of Self esteem. What does it mean to have self and how does self–impact students today and beyond? To have self, it simply
means how that person builds self–growth, an education and in real life realtionships. This certainly has a direct correlation and impact on how
students experience in school and in real world living.
Having a sense of self is believed to be encouraged. Nothing is more important than having confidence in yourself and displaying your personality
publicly, without feeling the adverse effects from judgment. Twenge does an excellent job in

Summary Of Me Talk Pretty One Day
In David Sedaris's essay "Me Talk Pretty One Day" he writes about his first experiences in France with classmates and sarcastic teacher. Sedaris explains
how his teacher would intimidate and belittle every student. Sedaris attempts to persuade the audience by making them feel certain emotions by
describing how he and his classmates felt when his teacher minimize them all. It appealed to ethics by the methods his teacher used to teach his
classmates French. It told the audience that even though insulting someone in a different language is an eccentric way of teaching them that language.
However, that way the teacher taught the students how to speak French. But, the excerpt did not appeal to logical because it gave a better connection
to the readers through emotions and ethics with his colorful imagery that is clearly seen throughout the text. In the essay, Sedaris uses the English
language in a calculated manner and he uses the words themselves, both real words and gibberish, not simply to tell the story to the audience but also
to put into words the confusion his teacher left when he couldn't understand the language being spoken to him. The devices of theme, conflict, tension,
detail, description and characterization, are given as well to show us Sedaris's own character arc.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He and his classmates were bonding over their language difficulties and similar negative classroom experiences. He says "it was a conversation

He has a teacher, who is pure evil, but instead of quitting the course he just keeps working harder and harder till he one day understands what she
tells him. He does not give up just because she is being rude to him. His determination and ability to make the best of what he got, gets him
through a hard time and makes it better and educational. He and the other students did not believe that any of them would ever improve. A lot of
time went and he had a hard time seeing things on the bright side. Even though he did not understand every word in the beginning he kept studying
and because of his awful French teacher he decided to study even harder and because of this he one day realizes that he understood every word she
said to him. This positive response of his work makes it easy to understand what he wants to tell the reader. I believe that Sedaris' purpose with the
text is to motivate college students who may be experiencing a difficult course with a less than pleasant teacher so that he may inspire students to
achieve all their goals. He may seem negative about his teacher and course but in the ending he tells us everything about his achievement and therefore
he seems really positive. The last sentence he writes supports this idea of him motivating other students. "The world opened up, and it was with great

A Life Of Tranquility : The One For Me?
A life of Tranquility: The One for Me?
I.Introduction
In opposition to hedonism, some philosophers have argued that the most pleasant life is a life of tranquility. Whereas hedonism is highlighted by
being pleasure driven; the tranquil lifestyle is driven by maintaining a static pleasure. With this in mind it becomes clear that one way to evaluate
how philosophers argued if a tranquil life was the most pleasant life would be to compare the two. Three aspects that can be evaluated are the fact
that a life of tranquility is one of a life of prudence, it is simple lifestyle, and it is forward looking all of which I hope to explain in more detail
throughout this paper.
II.A life of Prudence
My first attempt to understanding, how a life of tranquility may be the most pleasant life is to understand the concepts behind a life of tranquility along
with understanding a hedonic lifestyle. In doing this I hope to lay the groundwork to further explore how these two interact with each other.
According to Epicurus, a life of tranquility is one where a person (for the sake of the paper we will follow the character Christian) achieves happiness
by maintaining static pleasures. The point of maintaining static pleasures serves a two–fold purpose. The first is that if Christian were to seek
non–necessary pleasures (desiring a bigger car/bigger house), he would begin to desire them and work for them more. Eventually however, this would
lead to pain (his car breaks or there a newer model he

Personal Narrative: Mcdougal High School
The 21st of July, 2009 is when he vanished. He gathered his things and walked out the door. He took everything, hope, love, and happiness. I hated
him, I hate him, for what he did to our family. Believe it or not, we were once a normal functioning family, both my parents worked and my
19–year–old brother, Josh, and I got straight A's. On Fridays when he would pick me up at the elementary school he would always have chosen a
special treat for me. The last treat I got was on Friday was 12 years ago. He had all of his stuff in his car and he gave me a caramel apple pop. I woke
up at 5a.m. this morning so I could shower and get to basketball on time. The coach would kill me if I showed up late to our morning practice at 6:30.

My stomach twisted at the thought of losing when we pulled into the McDougal High School's parking lot. I ran into the building where our coach
taught us the new positions until it was time to play. The ref blew the whistle and threw the ball into the air. I jumped up with my feet dangling off
the ground and slapped the ball out of its orbit and ran down the court. I could feel my heart beating, I lurched to a screaming halt at the three point
line and pushed the ball towards the basket. I shut my eyes hoping it would make it. I heard the ball drop to the ground and the crowd that was
erupting with cheers, I opened my eyes and saw my teammates smiling. "That's a girl!" my coach hollered as I ran towards the sideline and sat
down on the bench. We ended up winning by 2 points after two overtime periods. I glanced around as I was walking to the locker room. This high
school was much nicer than ours, they had full lockers and commons with tables and bookshelves. CRUNCH! I stopped in my tracks and peeled

The Life Of My Life
As a small child, I had always wished to meet the man of my dreams, start a family, and achieve success in the path I chose. As I grew, I learned
about the world around me and myself. I learned these things gradually each small bit of information being picked up and put with other pieces, until
one piece came along that was just a little bit bigger and more significant than the others.
It was the middle of spring, and I had survived sixth grade up to this point without incident. I hadn't experienced anything that would truly have an
impact on me as a person. Things were normal and easy. Few serious thoughts found themselves in my head. It was on rare occasion that I reflected on
who I was, but those were thoughts with very little depth that faded quickly. Given the option between playing soccer and walking during class one
day, my friend Terra andI decided to walk. I had known Terra since fourth grade. Our friendship was strange but solid; we had become close during the
past months. Conversation turned to sexual orientation, a subject on which, to this day, I still am unsure how we landed.
"So, like, I'm pretty sure I'm bi," I said awkwardly, wiggling my hands around in the pockets of my jeans. "I'm into girls and I'd totally date a girl,
but I'd date dudes too." I sighed and shrugged. "I'd have sex with girls but I don't think I'd have sex with guys. Like, I could try, but penis just isn't
really my thing, ya know." Sexuality had come up in my seldom bouts of self–reflection, but much like the other subjects, it flew away with the next
wind.
"Yeah, that makes sense," Terra said nodding "So you're bi, that's pretty chill. I mean I'm not really straight either." And that was that. No big deal just
a casual conversation on a middle school football field.
Two days, maybe even a week later, I realized I had a crush on one of my friends. Her name was Penelope. She was gorgeous. She looked like winter
and gave off the feeling of spring. She was a calm, gentle girl with eyes like cool blue pools of water. Her hair was long and a pale blonde,
complementing her even paler smooth skin. I had known her since fourth grade, just as I had Terra, our friendship had paused forfifth grade and started
redeveloping.

My Experience In College Life
As a student, I can tell why some of the frustrations occur when the conscientious seldom does not pay off adequate. No wonder thirty percent of
first–year college students drop out. Every second of college life feels intimated since the future of student mostly rely on how they manipulate the
time. I wonder if I can keep myself into college, or will I be counted as one in those thirty percent of first–year college students. I don't want to be that
statistic; I won't be. The present that I hold highlights my past, where life granted me one last chance to change my destiny.
When I was eleven–years–old, my family and I lived in Nepal as refugees. Also, our house, as well as others, was constructed from bamboo and
thatch. It wasn't robust enough to sustain heavy wind, fire, or rain. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, also known as UNHCR, helped
by contributing rations such as rice, beans, oil, salt, and sugar. Every month, the provision was allocated equally among the people in the camp
warehouse. One day, on the way back from school, I noticed my grandmother waving her hand at me from far away. I ran straight to her leaving
friends behind to play soccer. Eventually, I sat beside her as she continued her conversation with a neighbor aunt.

Two productions that I had enjoyed seeing very much were Lend Me a Tenor and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. Both of these productions
were great and had very great storyline and I really enjoyed both of these productions. Each production had great actors and each portrayed their
character very well, by using many of the aspects of the six elements of theatre that Aristotle used to explain the aesthetics of theatre. Each of these
productions had very interesting characters and also had great plots that kept audiences on the edges of their seats. In each of these productions there
were also many recurring themes and important messages that were underlying the whole play. The design and furniture of both plays were also very
stunning and visually pleasing. In Lend Me a Tenor, there was a set of a house, which was very neat and very pretty. The house was very great and
also had other doors to other rooms that were very neatly and visually set up. In the production, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, the design of the set
was very horror filled and it was very dark because the setting was inside an asylum. A lot of the plot production and set and use of characters to

each set gave off. Each play also had a specific underlying theme, which was developed throughout the play, by many different characters, sets, and

Me Talk Pretty One Day Sedaris
Learning a foreign language can be quite a difficult task, which is why it is important to have a comfortable learning environment, as well a good
teacher who can encourage and help you to keep you motivated in your studies. In his essay "Me Talk Pretty One Day", David Sedaris seems to be
lacking both in his quest to become fluent in the French language.
Before leaving New York to go to France, Sedaris took a month long French course as to not be a total beginner when attending class in France. On
the first day, Sedaris is quite nervous, as he does not feel very confident in his French, especially not when observing the other students, who despite
their nationalities spoke in what to him seemed like perfect French. Furthermore, he knows that he is expected to perform, because "That's the way they
do it here – it's everybody into the language pool, sink or swim" (p. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is shown by the broad use of everyday terms like ''She'd been shaken up a little'', ''an easy ten–minute walk'', etc. Additionally, Sedaris is also
writing in a very personal style, using his own personal experiences to bond with the reader to make the story seem more authentic. Besides
speaking in a rather casual matter, Sedaris' tone is also affected by the use of humour and imagery, which is seen throughout the essay. For example,
"[...] they were all young, attractive, and well dressed, causing me to feel not unlike Pa Kettle trapped backstage after a fashion show" (p. 1 l. 12)
and "had front teeth the size of tombstones." (p. 1 l. 33). Sedaris also makes use of irony, creating a distance from the text, by using nonsense words
when he does not understand what the teacher says, for example, "If you have not meimslsxp or lgpdmurct by this time, then you should not be in this
room. Has everyone apzkiubjxow? (p. 1 l. 21). This contributes to the humoristic and casual tone of the

My feelings have changed, though. I don't giggle anymore, at least not around my father. And I don't fell pressured to compete with him the way I
thought necessary for years. Now my father is not really so strong as he used to be and I am getting stronger. This change in strength comes at a
time when I am growing faster mentally than at any time before. I am becoming less my father and more myself. And as a result, there is less of a
need to be set apart from him and his command. I am no longer a rebel in the household, wanting to stand up against the master with clenched fists
and tensing jaws, trying to impress him with my education or my views on religion. I am no longer a challenger, quick to correct his verbal mistakes,
determined to beat him whenever possible in physical competition. I am not sure when it was that I began to feel less competitive with my father, but
it all became clearer to me one day this past January. I was home in Virginia for a week between exams, and Dad had stayed home from work because
the house was snowed in deep. It was then that I learned something I never could have guessed. I don't recall who suggested arm wrestling that day. We

me, making us to rethink why self–esteem is such a severe problem to the generation me, but benefit the boomers. Though it may sounds hard to
understand what causes the difference, but by viewing Maggie Nelson's essay "Great to Watch", we can get some new ideas. Nelson points out the
importance of making "slow thinking", which means thinking carefully before rush into taking actions. The reason behind slow thinking is that people
are too easy to be distracted from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A misleading immediate context can give false sense to the GenMe, while a positive immediate context can give solutions to problems. When
saying "immediate context", Gladwell claims it as "Specific and relatively small elements in the environment" (162). These small elements, or
signals, are serving as tipping points, which shows that changes are always possible if we can simply change the immediate context. That is, we
should always notice the both sides of immediate context. For example, when the crime rate was extremely high in the New York, David Gunn
realized that graffiti in the subway system is one of the small elements that send disorders to the public. On the one side, "The graffiti was symbolic
of the collapse of the system" (Gladwell 152). On another side, the graffiti also gives a solution to the crime problem that if we clean up the graffiti,
signals of disorders will be changes immediately into good orders. Similarly, most of the GenMe misunderstand the meaning of high self–esteem
because they received wrong signals from the immediate context. Twenge lists some examples of the educational immediate context by saying that,
"In the United States, office stores have started carrying large stocks of purple pens, as some teachers say that red ink is too 'scary' for children's
papers" (499). The change of colors is one small signal, and students will respond due to this signal automatically. Instead of feeling

An Army Of One : Me, By Jean Twenge
What causes people's behaviors to change over time? Is it the society shifting as a whole or it is the little things that gradually affects humans? Each
generation has its own special traits, and these traits are depending on the surrounding environment–immediate context. The immediate context is
words or behaviors that people are using present day have their meanings, which connects to the surrounding environment. There is a time period that
everyone believes that he or she is the best, which brings up the idea of self–centered. In An Army of One: Me, the author Jean Twenge, compares
situations under the idea of 'self–esteem" and the society is over–popularized the idea of "me". This social problem causes the unbalanced
understanding of normal tasks and over trended to individualism and self–centered. However, this social phenomenon does not appear suddenly;
instead, it depends on people's living conditions and the surrounding environment, in other words, which it the immediate context. In The Power of
Context, the author Malcolm Gladwell, introduces people were living in a negative environment that full of crime and bad behaviors, which results
people's actions are also changing with the surrounding context. However, there are also little things that exist in the surrounding environment that
influences human behaviors; as a result, people are gradually changing the environment into a positive way. During this process, people become more
selfless and serve to the society.

Essay about An Army of One: Me
The way the mind works is through a set of processes, which are steps that must be taken in order for the function it is producing to be
accomplished successfully. These processes are related to those that society must be willing to take in order to achieve a desired goal, otherwise
known as the 'struggle'. Younger generations, called Generation Me, develop narcissist views that did not allow for the 'struggle' to be considered in
their generation. The basis for this mindset is introduced by author Jean Twenge in her essay, "An Army of One: Me", as she described the gap that
occurred between Baby Boomer parents and their GenMe children. This communication was severed because GenMe was taught that their ideas are the
best, and therefore not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This generational gap was what altered the development of real learning, for it allowed Generation Me children to assume that hard work was not
needed to succeed and to learn. Due to the different mindset that was developed through the gap, self–esteem was not lacking in GenMe. So, it is
understandable why Boomers felt that an individual should be more important than society. They had to go through life fighting for what they believed
in, causing what Tannen calls the "human spirit" to take the blow (Tannen, 419). She states, "contentious public discourse becomes a model for
behavior and sets the tone for how individuals experience their relationship to others and the society we live in" (Tannen, 419). Baby Boomers did not
have self–esteem so they enforced it on their children, keeping them from ever feeling that way. The cause of them feeling this way is that "the
human brain is almost infinitely malleable" (Carr, 70). That malleability was used by Baby Boomer parents in order for them to set a sense of
self–esteem and individualism in their children. This alteration of their children's minds was Boomer parents' first mistake, for it did not allow children
to discover their own worth. Rather, it supplied them with false encouragement, and prevented the possibility of engaging themselves in a society
where everyone works together and is confident, but not individualistic.
That confidence according to Boomers was vital and because they did not have it, they

No One Undersand Me Short Story

  • 1. No One Undersand Me Short Story No one undersands me...My mind is flooded with endless thoughts and emotions. It's a ripple affect as one drops it creates more and more but the difference is: It's an endless ripple. Each day I think of the same idle or a new one, I try to compress it as a way to opress the notion of it, however, my mind becomes crowded with more ideations. It's like a demon, one that I created, that revolves around my eyes. I lost sight because of how pitch black it is and my eyes soon became adapted to it. My eyes follow anything that moves around my mind, my legs begin to walk to running, and without sending a signal my hands begin to reach for that motion. I find myself soon enough chasing what's been running away from me, but what can it be? In reality, it's my sanity full of vanity but in actuality it's just my insanity... But what's... I lost that sense from using my voice hiding to the screeching of my mind telling me what to do...I tried to escape that one voice by overriding it with my own, yet I lost that fight soon enough as well... My ears became deaf soon enough. I began to envision questions before my blinded eyes : What do I have left? What I have lost? What am I seeking? Am unconsiously self destructing? As these questions emerge the one that stands out to me " Have I failed my purpose of living?" I live my life being distand trying to find the anwser. However, what can I do with eyes blind to the light, ears deaf to my mind, a demon in my mind pulling stringles, a body walking on its own, and all I have left is emotions, the tangible sense of the world, and the sense to smell the fear I am covered in. But as time passes by I lose motivation to try... "What can I do with what I have left?" Is the final question that emerges in the end of the day, before I close my eyes and wake up to cage with time on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. I Can Not Control The World I am the type of person who likes to be in control. I was self–centered and felt the world should revolve around me and my family which consists of my husband, Vince, and our boys, Cody and Kyle. In 2008, I learned that I cannot control the world around me; there is a higher being for that, and to cherish every moment I have with the people I love the most. This story starts in 2000 when my husband received a job machining race motors in Mooresville, North Carolina. This is 20 miles north of Charlotte and is considered part of NASCAR country. My family and I packed up our belongings and moved on to a new adventure, leaving the rest of our family behind. We finally arrived in November of 2000 and I was just amazed at the fall... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My favorite part of North Carolina were the azalea bushes. The bushes were in just about every yard and the colors were beautiful with blooms that totally covered the bush with hot pink, light pink, and white. The way the bushes were shaped and the colors reminded me of gumballs. Then my world came crashing down. My husband and I were watching TV one evening when he turned to me and said, "I want to move back to Texas." "What for?" I asked. "I'm home sick. I want to be closer to my mom and to take care of her since Bert has passed away she is by herself now." He said. I was shocked. I said, "No! I love it here." Vince looked exasperated with me and said, "Don't you want to be closer to your mom? She is not getting any younger either." I told him, "My mom is just fine. She can take care of herself." I know that sounds harsh, but my mom and I are and have always been extremely close. At the time she was living in Bryan–College Station and working for Texas A&M. She would come down a couple times a year to spend time with us and we would take a whole day and go shopping, or I would take her to a quaint little town to explore their downtown. On the way to where ever we were going, we would talk about every subject under the sun. There were times when we were so engrossed in our conversations that we would wind up getting lost. Mom is a great listener and a wonderful grandma. I want to be a grandma ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Why The Wicked Don 't Care About Preferences It was once said that since outer space was practically infinite, there was no way that alternative universes couldn't exist. They say that's where we came from, there are endless theories from all types of viewpoints. Some call us godsends, some call us monsters. We call ourselves people. We didn't mean for it to happen, most of us would have prefered if it didn't. The wicked don't care about preferences, they don't care about anything besides themselves. They weren't thinking of anyone but themselves when they cast that spell, they weren't thinking on anyone but themselves when they sent a world that didn't belong to them into panic. It's been years since we arrived and so much has changed. Those of us that came over didn't age, how could animations age? We were given human personas to help blend in, some of us tried to construct lives knowing that we may never reach home again but, ultimately we gave up. It's rather demotivating when you have to watch the people you care about grow older while you never age. They changed our names, most of us. I'm Cindy now, Mickey got turned into Mick. They said that it's better this way so we don't attract unwanted attention to ourselves. That's not hard, the country that we're trapped in has been reduced to rubble because of our villains and the most magical place on Earth is the hell that we're forced to stay in. We got turned into targets, we've been branded as social outcasts and freaks, monsters; the marks on our forearms prove ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Summary Of Me Talk Pretty One Day In David Sedairs' Short story, Me Talk Pretty One Day, the main point of this story is no matter where you're from, or where you are in life, when learning a new language for the first time it can be an intimidating journey for anyone. I think for David and his classmates this was frightening, and exciting, but also exhilarating. No one likes to be subject to the dreadful words and actions that the teacher exhibited, while not fully understanding what was going on or being said in the class. I can imagine how scary this could be for a student in a new country. My audience is still anyone looking to travel abroad and learn a foreign language. Challenges for this demographic is going to be that this is for one specific encounter, and there is only this one account to base this on. David Sedaris talks about his account when he moved to France to learn French and how his fear went beyond the classroom when doing everyday things. One way this key point supports the story is when David Sedaris talks about how he would avoid going into the grocery stores or coffee shops because he was afraid he would have to speak French. "My fear and discomfort crept beyond the borders of the classroom and accompanied me out onto the wide boulevards. Stopping for a coffee, asking directions, depositing money in my bank account: these things were out of the question, as they involved having to speak. "(Sedaris, 2000). This supports his goal because he describes in detail the specific accounts he had with the locals and with his teacher in the classroom. I agree with his accounts he had while in France because he tells his story with vivid detail and encounters he had with the locals. He talks about how the teacher would tell him that she hated him and how he would take this personally, although this was happening with every student. Everyone in the class was subject to the mean and vulgar things that the teacher would do. He states that he is not alone and could seek comfort from his classmates as they were also having the same experience. This is supported by his account with his classmates and the conversations they would have in the hallways. Figuring out how to find his place among the younger generation in his class by ... • 5. As time passes by, children grow up, and reach a point... As time passes by, children grow up, and reach a point where they have to make decisions for their future. Most of them will go to college, but it is their choice to make a big jump to success or have a bad attitude to everything and waste the rest of their lives. I, a seventeen–year–old student, was stuck in a world of choices, and did not know which way to go. The fawn has to rely on its mother 's teachings and also its own instincts, Animals raise their young to survive on their own by means of hunting and keeping themselves protected, while parents send off their children to "survive" on their owns by means of motivation, determination and independence. Magic or Reality in One Hundred Years of Solitude and Bless Me Ultima In the South American storytelling tradition it is said that humans are possessed of a hearing that goes beyond the ordinary. This special form is the soul's way of paying attention and learning. The story makers or cantadoras of old spun tales of mystery and symbolism in order to wake the sleeping soul. They wished to cause it to prick up its ears and listen to the wisdom contained within the telling. These ancient methods evolved naturally into the writings of contemporary Latin American authors. By the time of Ultima's death at the end of the story, the owl has taken on great significance in Antonio's life and consequently in the progression of his understanding. "It was true" states Antonio "that the owl was Ultima's spirit. It had come with Ultima, and as men brought evil to our hills the owl had hovered over us, protecting us." (Anaya, 256). Other animals play a magical part in Antonio's story. There is the golden carp, an enchanted fish that Antonio sets out to find. He is inexplicably drawn toward finding the carp, and communing with it. The golden carp is a representation of the pagan gods that the Catholic Church had set its edicts against. This prohibition causes Antonio great consternation and internal debate. He wonders if his desire to find the fish is a lessening of his worthiness in the eyes of the church and in the eyes of God. None the less, he embarks on his quest. He takes a companion with him as his guide. This is an effective metaphor for the internal struggle facing Antonio in his life at home. Will he embrace the church and become the priest his mother wishes him to be, or will he instead become as his brothers and father, a wandering, restless spirit? • 8. Descriptive Essay About Love Lavender Soft rays of sunlight dance gently across my face leaving patterns in every direction they move. My bedroom walls remind me of you. Days without you by my side are black and white. Dull. I had no friends until you came back into my life. Our time together was magenta. Peaceful. You always knew how to draw me to you, even without meaning to. Chilling. The hall also hosted dances and plays, visiting theater groups, and other festivals that took place in and around our village. To live close to the hall was entertaining as we could watch the activities across the street. Theme, tone, and character development all help to compare and contrast these memoirs. Both texts have a large amount of these literary devices. "Bonne AnnГ©e" is about a Haitian child who grows up and learns to love Haiti. He is the narrator of the story. At first, he doesn't want to go back to Haiti after dictator FranГ§ois Duvalier (Papa Doc) leaves his country or the world. He is told that this will happen soon. As the narrator grows up, he watches a world cup soccer match: Italy vs. Haiti. This is still in New York, his home from before. Italy, a country that hasn't been scored on for two years, gets scored on by the Haitians in the match. Even though Haiti loses, the narrator feels proud for his natal country. In "Me Talk Pretty One Day", the narrator tries to learn French in Paris. He is given a very strict teacher who hates everyone in the class, especially him. At the end, though, all is revealed. The narrator can perfectly understand the teacher. The theme of both these texts is similar and different. In "Bonne AnnГ©e", one quote is this: "Perhaps the natal pull is stronger than it seems." (BenoГ®t 36). One theme of this story is that homeland is very important. In "Me Talk Pretty One Day", though, there is a different theme. As with everything, we judge ourselves, and we tend to be our biggest critic. We constantly judge ourselves, but why? People have referred to this type of judgement as self–esteem. "Unbalanced serotonin levels have been linked with people who suffer from depression; SSRIs work by maintaining a balance in serotonin levels in you r brain."(Watters 529). Even though the scientific evidence loosely supported the effectiveness of SSRIs, the people of Japan and around the globe were convinced of the benefits of using them. The anti–depressant market was seen as a multi–billion dollar market; the ability to relieve sadness and depression to promote a happy, healthy lifestyle with a pill easily appeals to humanity's pursuit of happiness. The need to fulfill our happiness was so great that we created our own, our "synthetic happiness" in the form a pill. When the Boomers proposed ideas to GenMe, GenMe accepted the ideas due to lack of self –control over his or her brain. The way for GenMe to become better individuals lies in cultivating self –awareness, which will allow GenMe to improve on its weaknesses, envision how certain decisions can affect one, and become less self–interested. • 19. An Army Of One : Me By Jean Twenge In a world that continues to advance technologically machines titled "sociable robots" acquire life–like characteristics once exclusive to humans. They are able to express artificial emotions that seem real to the user. In "Alone Together" by Sherry Turkle we see how sociable robots interact with children. They begin to feel emotions that were once exclusive to human interaction. In the narrative "An Army of One: Me" by Jean Twenge we see how prominent the generation gap is. Those under the age of thirty–five tend to focus more on themselves and making sure they feel worthy. Twenge appropriately titles this generation as "Generation Me," highlighting the fact that boosts of "self–esteem" leads to a rise in individualistic focus. Parents expose their children to toys that industries manufacture to fill the emotional needs children have at a young age. This consequently decreases the need for human interaction. As technology develops and become more "alive," researchers are able to find what children desire and are able to give those desires to them in a toy. These new toys shape how children think and grow, directly affecting them for their entire lives. By changing the notions of aliveness, sociable robots "cultivate" behaviors representative of Generation Me by manipulating values important to one's well–being through their expression of life–like emotions and behaviors. Adults are able to mold the behaviors of their children through the use of an external factor. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He has given me more than any other single person on this planet. He gave me the desire to do better. He gave me the focus and the hunger to be intellectually curious. He gave me these things because he never had them. My father has been in and out of prison since April 29th, 2011. He gave me an understanding of adult life at far too young an age, and he left me with trust issues. • 26. Analysis Of Jean Twenge's An Army Of One : Me In the short piece, "An Army of One: Me," written by Jean Twenge, there is an issue that is not only evident in today's society, but in one that started well before the contemporary times. We relate these matters to the generation of baby boomers and also currently labeled, Generation Me. Generation Me is often criticized in having little to no self–esteem. Because of the prior generations, the word self–esteem seems to be brought up quite often in this passage. There has been a strong focus on mental health of a child growing through school and seems to be affecting their outcome as well as ability to learn. We live in a world where there is a push for the better of people, more so the consiouness of idividuality. Twenge inserts a lyric by Whitney Houton stating, "learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all time (756)." Twenge inserts this quote because of the issue brught up in the world today, the lack of Self esteem. What does it mean to have self and how does self–impact students today and beyond? To have self, it simply means how that person builds self–growth, an education and in real life realtionships. This certainly has a direct correlation and impact on how students experience in school and in real world living. Having a sense of self is believed to be encouraged. Nothing is more important than having confidence in yourself and displaying your personality publicly, without feeling the adverse effects from judgment. Twenge does an excellent job in ... • 27. Summary Of Me Talk Pretty One Day In David Sedaris's essay "Me Talk Pretty One Day" he writes about his first experiences in France with classmates and sarcastic teacher. Sedaris explains how his teacher would intimidate and belittle every student. Sedaris attempts to persuade the audience by making them feel certain emotions by describing how he and his classmates felt when his teacher minimize them all. It appealed to ethics by the methods his teacher used to teach his classmates French. It told the audience that even though insulting someone in a different language is an eccentric way of teaching them that language. However, that way the teacher taught the students how to speak French. But, the excerpt did not appeal to logical because it gave a better connection to the readers through emotions and ethics with his colorful imagery that is clearly seen throughout the text. In the essay, Sedaris uses the English language in a calculated manner and he uses the words themselves, both real words and gibberish, not simply to tell the story to the audience but also to put into words the confusion his teacher left when he couldn't understand the language being spoken to him. The devices of theme, conflict, tension, detail, description and characterization, are given as well to show us Sedaris's own character arc.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It takes time and a lot of patience if you want to learn a new foreign language. Travelling to a foreign country and learning the language by a native citizen is one way to learn it. This is the way the author learns it and in Me talk pretty one day we read about his experiences with a native teacher. David Sedaris tells the story of how he tried to learn French and therefore travelled to Paris, France. Going back to school was strange but still it was exciting. He does not give up just because she is being rude to him. His determination and ability to make the best of what he got, gets him through a hard time and makes it better and educational. He and the other students did not believe that any of them would ever improve. A lot of time went and he had a hard time seeing things on the bright side. Even though he did not understand every word in the beginning he kept studying and because of his awful French teacher he decided to study even harder and because of this he one day realizes that he understood every word she said to him. This positive response of his work makes it easy to understand what he wants to tell the reader. I believe that Sedaris' purpose with the text is to motivate college students who may be experiencing a difficult course with a less than pleasant teacher so that he may inspire students to achieve all their goals. He may seem negative about his teacher and course but in the ending he tells us everything about his achievement and therefore he seems really positive. The last sentence he writes supports this idea of him motivating other students. "The world opened up, and it was with great joy that I responded, "I know what the thing that you speak exact now. Makeup, which makes me look younger, shows on my face, and I spot sand between my fingernails. Confused, I walk as I look down at them until I reach my door. I.Introduction In opposition to hedonism, some philosophers have argued that the most pleasant life is a life of tranquility. Whereas hedonism is highlighted by being pleasure driven; the tranquil lifestyle is driven by maintaining a static pleasure. With this in mind it becomes clear that one way to evaluate how philosophers argued if a tranquil life was the most pleasant life would be to compare the two. Three aspects that can be evaluated are the fact that a life of tranquility is one of a life of prudence, it is simple lifestyle, and it is forward looking all of which I hope to explain in more detail throughout this paper. II.A life of Prudence My first attempt to understanding, how a life of tranquility may be the most pleasant life is to understand the concepts behind a life of tranquility along with understanding a hedonic lifestyle. In doing this I hope to lay the groundwork to further explore how these two interact with each other. According to Epicurus, a life of tranquility is one where a person (for the sake of the paper we will follow the character Christian) achieves happiness by maintaining static pleasures. The point of maintaining static pleasures serves a two–fold purpose. The first is that if Christian were to seek non–necessary pleasures (desiring a bigger car/bigger house), he would begin to desire them and work for them more. Eventually however, this would lead to pain (his car breaks or there a newer model he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. The Life Of My Life As a small child, I had always wished to meet the man of my dreams, start a family, and achieve success in the path I chose. As I grew, I learned about the world around me and myself. I learned these things gradually each small bit of information being picked up and put with other pieces, until one piece came along that was just a little bit bigger and more significant than the others. It was the middle of spring, and I had survived sixth grade up to this point without incident. I hadn't experienced anything that would truly have an impact on me as a person. Things were normal and easy. Few serious thoughts found themselves in my head. It was on rare occasion that I reflected on who I was, but those were thoughts with very little depth that faded quickly. Given the option between playing soccer and walking during class one day, my friend Terra andI decided to walk. I had known Terra since fourth grade. Our friendship was strange but solid; we had become close during the past months. Conversation turned to sexual orientation, a subject on which, to this day, I still am unsure how we landed. "So, like, I'm pretty sure I'm bi," I said awkwardly, wiggling my hands around in the pockets of my jeans. "I'm into girls and I'd totally date a girl, but I'd date dudes too." I sighed and shrugged. "I'd have sex with girls but I don't think I'd have sex with guys. Like, I could try, but penis just isn't really my thing, ya know." Sexuality had come up in my seldom bouts of self–reflection, but much like the other subjects, it flew away with the next wind. "Yeah, that makes sense," Terra said nodding "So you're bi, that's pretty chill. I mean I'm not really straight either." And that was that. No big deal just a casual conversation on a middle school football field. Two days, maybe even a week later, I realized I had a crush on one of my friends. Her name was Penelope. She was gorgeous. She looked like winter and gave off the feeling of spring. She was a calm, gentle girl with eyes like cool blue pools of water. Me Talk Pretty One Day Sedaris Learning a foreign language can be quite a difficult task, which is why it is important to have a comfortable learning environment, as well a good teacher who can encourage and help you to keep you motivated in your studies. In his essay "Me Talk Pretty One Day", David Sedaris seems to be lacking both in his quest to become fluent in the French language. Before leaving New York to go to France, Sedaris took a month long French course as to not be a total beginner when attending class in France. On the first day, Sedaris is quite nervous, as he does not feel very confident in his French, especially not when observing the other students, who despite their nationalities spoke in what to him seemed like perfect French. Furthermore, he knows that he is expected to perform, because "That's the way they do it here – it's everybody into the language pool, sink or swim" (p. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is shown by the broad use of everyday terms like ''She'd been shaken up a little'', ''an easy ten–minute walk'', etc. Additionally, Sedaris is also writing in a very personal style, using his own personal experiences to bond with the reader to make the story seem more authentic. Besides speaking in a rather casual matter, Sedaris' tone is also affected by the use of humour and imagery, which is seen throughout the essay. For example, "[...] they were all young, attractive, and well dressed, causing me to feel not unlike Pa Kettle trapped backstage after a fashion show" (p. 1 l. 12) and "had front teeth the size of tombstones." (p. 1 l. 33). Sedaris also makes use of irony, creating a distance from the text, by using nonsense words when he does not understand what the teacher says, for example, "If you have not meimslsxp or lgpdmurct by this time, then you should not be in this room. A misleading immediate context can give false sense to the GenMe, while a positive immediate context can give solutions to problems. When saying "immediate context", Gladwell claims it as "Specific and relatively small elements in the environment" (162). These small elements, or signals, are serving as tipping points, which shows that changes are always possible if we can simply change the immediate context. That is, we should always notice the both sides of immediate context. For example, when the crime rate was extremely high in the New York, David Gunn realized that graffiti in the subway system is one of the small elements that send disorders to the public. On the one side, "The graffiti was symbolic of the collapse of the system" (Gladwell 152). On another side, the graffiti also gives a solution to the crime problem that if we clean up the graffiti, signals of disorders will be changes immediately into good orders. Similarly, most of the GenMe misunderstand the meaning of high self–esteem because they received wrong signals from the immediate context. Twenge lists some examples of the educational immediate context by saying that, "In the United States, office stores have started carrying large stocks of purple pens, as some teachers say that red ink is too 'scary' for children's papers" (499). The change of colors is one small signal, and students will respond due to this signal automatically. Instead of feeling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. An Army Of One : Me, By Jean Twenge What causes people's behaviors to change over time? Is it the society shifting as a whole or it is the little things that gradually affects humans? Each generation has its own special traits, and these traits are depending on the surrounding environment–immediate context. The immediate context is words or behaviors that people are using present day have their meanings, which connects to the surrounding environment. There is a time period that everyone believes that he or she is the best, which brings up the idea of self–centered. In An Army of One: Me, the author Jean Twenge, compares situations under the idea of 'self–esteem" and the society is over–popularized the idea of "me". This social problem causes the unbalanced understanding of normal tasks and over trended to individualism and self–centered. However, this social phenomenon does not appear suddenly; instead, it depends on people's living conditions and the surrounding environment, in other words, which it the immediate context. In The Power of Context, the author Malcolm Gladwell, introduces people were living in a negative environment that full of crime and bad behaviors, which results people's actions are also changing with the surrounding context. However, there are also little things that exist in the surrounding environment that influences human behaviors; as a result, people are gradually changing the environment into a positive way. Essay about An Army of One: Me The way the mind works is through a set of processes, which are steps that must be taken in order for the function it is producing to be accomplished successfully. These processes are related to those that society must be willing to take in order to achieve a desired goal, otherwise known as the 'struggle'. Younger generations, called Generation Me, develop narcissist views that did not allow for the 'struggle' to be considered in their generation. The basis for this mindset is introduced by author Jean Twenge in her essay, "An Army of One: Me", as she described the gap that occurred between Baby Boomer parents and their GenMe children. This communication was severed because GenMe was taught that their ideas are the best, and therefore not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This generational gap was what altered the development of real learning, for it allowed Generation Me children to assume that hard work was not needed to succeed and to learn. Due to the different mindset that was developed through the gap, self–esteem was not lacking in GenMe. So, it is understandable why Boomers felt that an individual should be more important than society. They had to go through life fighting for what they believed in, causing what Tannen calls the "human spirit" to take the blow (Tannen, 419). She states, "contentious public discourse becomes a model for behavior and sets the tone for how individuals experience their relationship to others and the society we live in" (Tannen, 419). Baby Boomers did not have self–esteem so they enforced it on their children, keeping them from ever feeling that way. The cause of them feeling this way is that "the human brain is almost infinitely malleable" (Carr, 70). That malleability was used by Baby Boomer parents in order for them to set a sense of self–esteem and individualism in their children. This alteration of their children's minds was Boomer parents' first mistake, for it did not allow children to discover their own worth. Rather, it supplied them with false encouragement, and prevented the possibility of engaging themselves in a society where everyone works together and is confident, but not individualistic. That confidence according to Boomers was vital and because they did not have it, they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
