1. No Lh Surge Means
Understanding Luteinizing hormone

Nancy asks…
Please help me understand this?
I am using the clear blue ovulation test. The one that gives you a smiley face when you have a
LH surge (meaning you will ovulate in 12-36 hours) and then no smiley face when you are not
having a surge. I got the smiley face yesterday morning and the no smiley face this morning.
Does this mean I already ovulated? Or should we have sex again tonight to increase our
chances? I just am not sure once the surge goes down if your chances are over. By the way my
husband and I had sex the 14th and the 18th and 19th but not yesterday. any advice or
comments.
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
The odds are that you are ovulating now/will ovulate sometime today. You need to get busy and
have sex to ensure there is sperm waiting for the egg when it is released. The LH surges and
then starts falling sharply. When the surge reaches it’s peak ovulation happens on average 36
hours later. Most women see only 1 positive OPK per cycle and that is almost always the day
BEFORE ovulation.

+ LH Surge CD12, – LH Surge CD13 & + LH Surge CD14?
i have a regular 27 day cycle and this month i had a strange thing happen. this month i tested
three times a day, 6:30am, 12:00pm and 6:00pm, just to make sure i didnt miss my surge. cd12
@ 6:30am i had a + opk test. the line was the same color as the control line. during the 12:00pm
test the result was the same and it had lightened by the 6:00 pm test. i continued to test cd13,
for no other reason then wanting to see if the test was still – and my surge was gone. that day
(fri) all tests were – even though a faint test line was still there so i guessed my surge was
gone. i dont know what made me think to take a test again the next day (saturday) but just for
kicks i took another opk test at 9:36am and within seconds my test line was way darker then the
control line. yikes! so dh and i had to throw some bd in there. i tested again at 3:30pm and the
test was not only – but the test line was barely there.
my question is this….i know you can catch your surge going up or either coming down but does
it say constant the entire surge? meaning, cd12 was that the surge going up and then cd14 i
caught it going back down? fri at 6:00pm my test was clearly – but the next day, 15 hours later it
was + without a doubt and less then 6 hours later – again. i know we covered all our bd days….
cd09 – bd
cd11 – bd
cd12 – +opk
cd13 – bd
cd14 – bd & +opk
has anyone else experienced this?

3. I had the same thing but the opks I have are very hard to tell. I have 2 that are dark and appear
to be positive with a negative day in between. Not sure but, next month I am buying the digital
ones that give you a smiley face if you are ovulating.
Sandra asks…
has anyone used the clear blue digital ovulation kit?
Hi i was just wandering if anyone has used the clear blue digital ovulation kit, as i bought one
tonight just to check to see if i was ovulating, and cause i have irregular periods it makes it
harder for me to know when i’m ovulating, so today i thought i might be ovulating as I had that
cervical mucus that looks like egg white and there was quite lot of it. so i thought yippee, i’m
ovulating, but when i done the clear blue test i noticed Two tiny tiny dots of blood on the tissue,
and the test cam up with no LH Surge meaning no ovulation, has anyone else had this, i’ve
had cramping too. maybe i’m allready pregnant, but i’m so confused now. ive also had an ache
in my back today too. any advice would be great thank you.
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
The ovulation kits give you a positive when you have your LH surge, meaning that ovulation is
likely within the next 24-36 (or so) hours. If you are having your egg white CM today, then you
likely would have gotten your positive on the test had you taken it a day or two ago.

My breasts have grown two cup sizes in the past month… why?
My breasts have gone from a large A to a regular C cup within the past month. They were a
large A for most of my life up till this point, other than the time when I lost 15 lbs, then they were
a very small A.
I’m 24 years old, so obviously I’m not going through puberty. My husband and I are trying to
get pregnant, but other than the breast growth, I’ve had no other symptoms of pregnancy. We
last had intercourse on the days I was supposed to be most fertile, but my clearblue fertility
monitor showed no LH surge, meaning I wasn’t ovulating, unless the test was wrong.
I just can’t figure out whether it’s something I’m doing or eating– I haven’t really done
anything different. I haven’t gained weight other than the breasts. My jeans still fit like they did
before.
What could it be?
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
It could well be a pregnancy symptom.
Go have a blood test and see if you are pregnant.
Early in pregnancy breasts tend to grow a lot because of the hormones. Most often breast

Donna asks…
No positive LH surge this month. What could that mean?
I have been tracking my ovulation for two months. The first month I used Accu Clear. I got a
positive reading on CD15. I got an ultrasound about three months ago because of some pain
I’d been having. The doc said it looked like I had a ruptured cyst on my right ovary.
Unfortunately, my insurance didn’t cover it, so I can’t go back for their recommended check up.
Hubby and I are TTC (for three months now). I am now on CD18 with no positive LH surge yet.
I’m using First Response this month…However, the 2nd line is really dark, just not quite as dark
as the reference line. Did I possibly grow another cyst this month instead of ovulating? I did
have extreme pain on my right side last night. Why does this whole making a baby thing have to
be so hard? Thanks so much!
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
It could be another cyst. You could chart your temperature to double check ovulation. Beyond
this there is not much more you could do unless you go back to the doctor.

6. Lisa asks…
Can you still have the LH surge when you are actually ovulating?
I understand what the LH surge is (the hormone that OPK detect. Once it has detected it, you
are normally 24-36 hours away from ovulation). However, I have been testing twice a day from
picking up the first surge, to see if it could detect ovulation – I tested on the first day and had
the LH surge, and also on the second day. But on the second day it was a positive surge at
say 5 pm. I then retested at 11.30 pm, and there was no surge. Therefore, does that mean that
ovulation has taken place because the surge has gone?
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
Ovulation happens after the FIRST positive you see. That is the beginning of the surge that will
trigger ovulation. The positive OPKs you see after that is the remaining LH still in your system –
it sometimes takes a while to work out. I had 3 straight days of positive OPKs when I conceived.
