1. Lh Surge Before Period
Understanding Luteinizing hormone
http://lhhormone.org
Helen asks…
when do you usually have a LH surge after your period or before?
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
Luteinizing Hormone
In both sexes, LH stimulates secretion of sex steroids from the gonads. In the testes, LH binds
to receptors on Leydig cells, stimulating synthesis and secretion of testosterone. Theca cells in
the ovary respond to LH stimulation by secretion of testosterone, which is converted into
estrogen by adjacent granulosa cells.
In females, ovulation of mature follicles on the ovary is induced by a large burst of LH secretion
known as the preovulatory LH surge. Residual cells within ovulated follicles proliferate to form
corpora lutea, which secrete the steroid hormones progesterone and estradiol. Progesterone is
necessary for maintenance of pregnancy, and, in most mammals, LH is required for continued
development and function of corpora lutea. The name luteinizing hormone derives from this
effect of inducing luteinization of ovarian follicles.
In other words, before.

2. Mary asks…
LH surge, TTCing after miscarriage before period.?
I detected a light surge for 4 days, then yesterday a stong strong surge and today a light surge
. Does it mean I’m ovulating? Doc gave me the go ahead to TTC, saids why wait and to try
soon as I feel ready.
I TRULY feel ready, and hoping to become pregnant as I heard that women are most fertile
after a miscarriage or pregnancy.
Question is: Since I only got a strong surge yesterday after faint surges, will today and
tomorrow be he days I’m most fertile?
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
I think it’s more like in the time frame after you’re pregant/miscarry…you should be fertile for a
good week or so!

b-fore and the day b-fore that.
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
How long ago was that? It’s really difficult to say since you haven’t really given a time frame.
You could be pregnant…you definitely have a shot since it sounds like you timed it really well!
Got my fingers crossed for you!!!!!

4. After a miscarriage do your hcg levels return to 0 before a period
will come?
After my miscarriage I was using opks to see if ovulation might be getting back on track. Since
my miscarriage I had an lh surge about 4 weeks afterwards (3 weeks afterwrds by hcg levels
were about 14. The surgeon from my d&c left some placenta in there, but another doctor
removed it from blocking y cervix and the bleeding stopped within 24 hours. It was still 14 with
extra placenta floating around in there.). I got my period 2 weeks after this lh surge and then
on 12/2 I recognized another lh surge. I am now getting 2 faint positives on pregnancy tests
and then did a digital this morning and it says POSITIVE. I am experiencing my typical
pregnancy symptoms. Could this be left over hcg from previous pregnancy or might I really be
pregnant again? I was unde the impression that I wouldn’t have lh surges or periods if my hcg
hadn’t returned to 0. I will call the doctor either way, but I just curious what others think.
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
I think a surge means something is going on. Since the last one showed something still in you,
hopefully they checked well enough that you shouldn’t need more emergency surgeries
because of it. Just a guess, but I’d think pregnancy. I think only an ultrasound would really tell
you.

Sandy asks…
LH surge, no period, negative test?
I missed my period yesterday. I took a LH test and it was positive 18 days ago. I also got
symptoms that I was ovulating like ovulation pains and that I ovulated like sore breasts. I was
also getting period-like cramps and I thought I would start my period but it never came. I also
have taken a couple pregnancy tests – one yesterday – 15dpo – and it is negative. I also got at
about 14dpo pink blood – but that was after sex so I don’t know if it was from sex, but I’ve
never had that before so I don’t understand why. Can anyone tell me what is going on? Why
did I get an LH surge and now I don’t have my period or a positive HPT?

6. Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
LH surge is not a guarantee of ovulation or that you get pregnant if you have sex during that
time. It just tells you that your body is preparing for it and it’s a good time for intercourse. A
negative HPT doesn’t mean anything. I showed positive (and just) after 3 or more days that I
was late. Bleeding could be due to implantation if you are pregnant. If you desperately want to
become pregnant your body could trick you and make your periods late.
You could very well be pregnant (and sounds like it) but haven’t produced enough of the hcg
for a test to show positive
