No Lh Surge And Pregnancy
Understanding Luteinizing hormone

Susan asks…

Could I be pregnant? No LH Surge?
I tryed an ovulation kit this cycle, but never detected an LH surge. My husband and I had sex
the day before I had marked may calandar for ovulation. But I never got the LH surge to tell me
I ovulated. I am supposed to have my period today. I have noticed alot of opaque runny
discharge. I have also been sensative to a couple of things smell wise that normally wouldn’t
bother me. I am not looking for to many signs as I don’t want to be one of those that asumes
the headache and breast tenderness is pregnancy every time. I also don’t want to run out right
now to get a test either. I would like to wait a week since my period so were so irregular, but I
was currious if anyone had an opinion on my current state.

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

Take the test. If you are late you are late. It will put your mind at ease. If negative, then wait to
see if it comes next week. Or just suck it up and get the blood test. That way you will know.
Good luck

                                                                                                 1/7
Sharon asks…

No LH surge, but BBT has spiked. Did I ovulate?
I typically detect my LH surge somewhere b/w CD 17-20, altho one time I did not surge until
CD 30. I am now on CD 24, and have not detected a clear surge. On CD 17, the test line was
almost as dark as the control line, but not equal to it–therefore, I did not count that as a surge. I
continued testing CD 18-24, and still no surge. Now, however, I have noticed a raise in my BBT
to 98.15 (yesterday it was 97.33). In the past, my BBT only reached the 98 degree range after
surge & ovulation.

Has anyone else ever had a raise in BBT without actually detecting an LH surge? I am starting
to get what feels like the common cold, so I am wondering if this might be affecting my BBT.

I had a D&C on Jan. 31 (2 months ago exactly), and I did not have an LH surge until 26 days
post D&C, but I knew it would take longer than usual. I am wondering if I may still have delayed
ovulation because my body is still “recovering” from the failed pregnancy.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Update – in case others are reading this posting in search of an answer because you are going
thru the same thing, I can now share with you my experience. I finally got a clear surge today,
CD 25. The prior ovulation test on CD 17 where the test line was *almost* as dark as the control
line was NOT a positive LH surge, as I now know in hindsight.

With regard to my BBT, it is true you should see if there is a spike for 3 days prior to considering
it as a true spike. Yesterday, CD 24, what I thought was a spike (98.15 degrees) was likely just
my temp being affected by the common cold. Today, CD 25, my temp was back down at 97.18.
[As a side note, I have noticed in the past that taking benadryl the night before yields a
misleadingly higher BBT reading.]

I should just trust my body and those OPK’s, in conjunction with taking BBT for guidance.

Hope this helps! I encourage others to update their postings so we can all help each other out.
Thank u!

                                                                                               2/7
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

This is hard to say — you might be running a small fever, which is interfering with your BBTs. I
think the only way to know that for sure is if you have three sustained high temps. It’s entirely
possible that you’re not getting the LH surge — it could simply be that you have a bad batch of
OPKs. However, if you’re using a monitor, in which case it might be expecting your cycle to be
based on the months before your D&C. I’ve recently had trouble with my monitor; they say in
the instructions that the memory will be erased if you take the batteries out for 2 hours; mine
were out for 5 years and it still thinks I’m on an old cycle!

Mandy asks…

LH Surge? Whats going on?
Ok, i have been using OPK’S for the past month. On the 15th, I had a postive surge, then on
the 17th i also had a positive surge. Yes we have been doing the baby dance. =)
But i have never used these before so, just to see i kept testing. I had positive surges on the
18th and the 19th (yesterday) I did not test on the 16th but on the 15, 17, 18,19 i had positive
surges. I didnt think that i would test positive so many days? Is there any indication of
pregnancy through the OPK’S? I mean, we have been doing the baby dance faithfully for a
year TTC. But this is the first time we have used OPK’S. So, before i had no idea when i
ovulated, i just counted in my head and woul say ” ok i think i might be ovulating today ” hence
not getting pregnant before. So my question after all this rambling is, can an OPK that gives you
a pos. surge 4 days almost in a row be any indicator of pregnancy? And i test line is MUCH
darker than the control line, not just the same color as the control line

                                                                                             3/7
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

I have heard that sometimes you can get positive OPK’s when you are pregnant. This is not a
solid indicator but could be a possibility.

Jenny asks…

TTC ovulation – pregnancy ?
ok so i detected my LH surge , then had sex 24 hours later.. conceived (i believe) right on the
ovulation date and now 4 days later im experiencing cramps and Cervical mucus but NO LH
surge??? please someone tell me whats going on, am I ovulating Again with no surge or is this
a sign of pregnancy, i asked before but noone answered :/

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

Yes that is most definitely a sign of pregnancy.
Hope the best for you.
Don’t be surprised if you start spotting around 8-12 dpo or the time of your period.
It’s perfectly normal.

                                                                                         4/7
Good luck!

Donna asks…

opk as pregnancy test?
I’ve read that positive opks can mean you’re PG. I have a pregnancy test but don’t want to
waste it. I’m TTC and have been doing opk’s fore about four or five months. I usually get a very
strong dark test line and that’s when I record a pos on Fertility Friend. I have also seen the
questionably positive test lines but I can tell the difference.

I am on CD 18 and still haven’t ovulated. For the past week, my opk’s are up and down. I’ll
have a positive one day, negative the next, then pos…neg…I’ve even noticed pos and neg’s in
the same day, on multiple days. The thing is, I know I haven’t ovulated even with these strong
positives. I know because I BBT and there has been no change in temp.

So, here’s the question:
The positives that people refer to when using opk’s as pregnancy tests, are they consistant
and strong dark lines? or can pregnancy cause this random rollercoaster in my LH surges?
I really don’t want to waste yet another pregnancy test for a BFN

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

You CAN use the OPK to test for pregnancy; the same rules apply, the line must be at least as
dark or darker than the control line or it’s a negative. From what you are describing it doesn’t

                                                                                            5/7
sound like you are pregnant yet. Once you have the pregnancy hormone in your body it should
keep reading consistently positive on your tests, not go up and down. Check out the link I have
posted, It explains how this works in more technical detail.

What you might be experiencing is your body trying to ovulate a couple of times during the
month, and maybe stress or illness is preventing it for some reason. So, you could still ovulate
this month

If you think you are pregnant and really want to test on an OPK I say go for it, just keep in mind
that it’s not going to be as easy to read as an HPT. Personally I would use the pregnancy test,
easier to read the results.

If it’s a matter of cost, Dollar Tree sells the tests and I’ve heard they are as good as the more
expensive ones.

Good luck, I hope you get your BFP very soon!

Carol asks…

Difference symptoms between PMS/PMT and Pregnancy?
Been trying for a baby, pinpointed LH surge about a week ago. Now feel intense hunger even
after I have just eaten and wake up in the night starving, going to the toilet all the time and my
stomach is really really bloated! but no aches in my boobs or sickness, I also feel so tired can’t
get up in the morning. could these signs be pregnancy signs or is it period signs which is due
on tues….

                                                                                              6/7
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

Oh yeah those are obvious signs. My first pregnancy I didnt have any symptoms, but now I am
20 weeks with number 2 and when I was 7 weeks, I would be starving all the time and if i didint
eat I would be sick to my stomach. Frequent urination and bloating is definatly a sign.
Find out, go see your doctor.

So my question after all this rambling is, can an OPK that gives you a pos. surge 4 days almost in a row be any indicator of pregnancy? And i test line is MUCH darker than the control line, not just the same color as the control line 3/7
  • 4. Pregnancy Advisor’s answers: I have heard that sometimes you can get positive OPK’s when you are pregnant. This is not a solid indicator but could be a possibility. • 5. Good luck! Donna asks… opk as pregnancy test? I’ve read that positive opks can mean you’re PG. I have a pregnancy test but don’t want to waste it. I’m TTC and have been doing opk’s fore about four or five months. I usually get a very strong dark test line and that’s when I record a pos on Fertility Friend. I have also seen the questionably positive test lines but I can tell the difference. I am on CD 18 and still haven’t ovulated. For the past week, my opk’s are up and down. I’ll have a positive one day, negative the next, then pos…neg…I’ve even noticed pos and neg’s in the same day, on multiple days. The thing is, I know I haven’t ovulated even with these strong positives. I know because I BBT and there has been no change in temp. So, here’s the question: The positives that people refer to when using opk’s as pregnancy tests, are they consistant and strong dark lines? or can pregnancy cause this random rollercoaster in my LH surges? I really don’t want to waste yet another pregnancy test for a BFN Pregnancy Advisor’s answers: You CAN use the OPK to test for pregnancy; the same rules apply, the line must be at least as dark or darker than the control line or it’s a negative. From what you are describing it doesn’t 5/7
  • 6. sound like you are pregnant yet. Once you have the pregnancy hormone in your body it should keep reading consistently positive on your tests, not go up and down. Check out the link I have posted, It explains how this works in more technical detail. What you might be experiencing is your body trying to ovulate a couple of times during the month, and maybe stress or illness is preventing it for some reason. So, you could still ovulate this month If you think you are pregnant and really want to test on an OPK I say go for it, just keep in mind that it’s not going to be as easy to read as an HPT. Personally I would use the pregnancy test, easier to read the results. If it’s a matter of cost, Dollar Tree sells the tests and I’ve heard they are as good as the more expensive ones. Good luck, I hope you get your BFP very soon! Carol asks… Difference symptoms between PMS/PMT and Pregnancy? Been trying for a baby, pinpointed LH surge about a week ago. • 7. Pregnancy Advisor’s answers: Oh yeah those are obvious signs. My first pregnancy I didnt have any symptoms, but now I am 20 weeks with number 2 and when I was 7 weeks, I would be starving all the time and if i didint eat I would be sick to my stomach. Frequent urination and bloating is definatly a sign. Find out, go see your doctor. Powered by Yahoo!
