 Pradhan Mantri Janaushadhi Yojana to be launched soon
The Union Government will launch the Pradhan Mantri Janaushadhi Yojana by the end of October 2015.
The government expects to set up 3,000 generic medicine outlets by FY2016. Under the scheme, 200
medical devices, 504 medicines and other items made by public sector undertakings will be on sale. With
this scheme, the government aims to employ B. Pharmaceuticals youths, NGOs and charitable trusts. The
Ayurvedic medicines will no longer be sold at the generic medicine shops. The B. Pharma graduates can
get shop space at the rural health centres, government's primary health centres, and district hospitals.

 IISc developed project to train nurses at three Bengaluru hospitals
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has developed an INR 22.45 lakh project where Mannequins will be used
to train nurses in post-operative cardiac critical care at three Bengaluru hospitals. The project is funded
by the Karnataka Knowledge Commission. The nursing training stimulator consist of a central processing
unit and a mannequin with human-like displays of palpable pulse, blood vessels, chest rise, stomach
distension as well as with interfaces normally present in a critical care ward. It will be piloted at Sri
Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Narayana Health, and St. John's National
Academy of Health Sciences. IISc's Centre Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM) are setting up the
scenarios into the simulators to train nurses to face critical situations in an ICU-like environment. This
project was sanctioned in April 2015. IISc will deploy the three stimulators by January 2016.
 TTK Healthcare partners with PSG IMSR for its low-cost heart valve project
TTK Healthcare Limited has become the industrial partner of PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and
Research (PSG IMSR), Coimbatore to develop low cost replacement prosthetic heart valves for India. PSG
IMSR is developing the heart valve with The Ohio State University (OSU) and Colorado State University
(CSU), funded through a grant from National Institutes of Health (NIH). TTK Healthcare will involve in the
occurrence of entire pre-clinical trials in India. After the success of the trails, TTK Healthcare would
commercialise the technology. This heart valve is expected to be superior to current mechanical and
tissue-based heart valves and thereby reduce patient’s need for medication to prevent blood clots.
 Abbott seeks to increase investment in R&D, expand in India
Abott plans to increase its investment in research and development (R&D) and strengthen its India’s
manufacturing plants to cater to domestic market and exports. The amount of investment is yet to be
disclosed. The company seeks to increase local sourcing for its nutritional product business, increase its
capabilities, infrastructure, and staff at both its pharmaceutical and nutrition R&D facilities to innovate
and introduce new product in India. It will also support Indian dairy farmers. The company has expanded
manufacturing facilities and increase pharmaceutical development in Mumbai and Baddi in Himachal
Pradesh to meet growing needs in India.

 Jharkhand government launches online medicine service
The Jharkhand government has launched its first telemedicine services to spread healthcare to remote
areas through technology and provide best healthcare to all the people of the state. It has launched the
online pilot project in Hazaribag district. Under the project, 50 primary health centres of Hazariburg
district were connected to sadar through Pragya Kendras. As per the service, the health department will
deliver support to rural primary health centres through sadar hospitals and medical colleges. This portal
will provide prescriptions and suggestions to patients online, as well as offer a platform to monitor health
initiatives including immunization programs and several health indicators.
 Apollo partners with Uber
Apollo Hospital has tied up with Uber to provide free rides to people visiting the hospitals across 11 cities
in India, such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata among others, for booking a health checkup. Non-
existing users of Uber would now avail to get a free ride and the existing users would get a 10 percent
discount on Apollo Personalised Health Check (APHC) & DNA+ from Datar Genetics as well as a 15
percent discount on Apollo Heart check and Whole Body check for three weeks. Apollo will provide a
promo code to all new Uber users which include two free rides worth INR 250 each.
 Mayo Clinic to set up cancer research institute in Odisha
Top global cancer research institute, Mayo Clinic, plans to set up a cancer research institute in Odisha.
This new institute will have research and training programmes in oncology. To set up the cancer institute,
Odisha state government, All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) and Council of Scientific and
Industrial Research (CSIR) will provide all possible support.

 Fortis to reacquire stakes in SRL
Fortis Healthcare will repurchase 3.1 percent stake in SRL limited from the investors, Sabre Partners
Trust, Spring Healthcare (P) Ltd and Spring Healthcare India Trust, for INR 105 crore. The Board of
Directors of Fortis has approved the acceptance of Right of First Refusal (ROFR) notice, which was issued
by these investors and agreed to buy the cumulative investors shareholding worth around 24.88 lakh
equity shares. As per the ROFR notice, the investors would transfer their entire shareholding in SRL Ltd to
the company. This acquisition will increase its equity shareholding in SRL Ltd to 57 per cent from the
current shareholding of 53.9 per cent.
 GSK Pharma acquires Novartis’ vaccine business
GlaxoSmith Kline Pharmeceutical Limited (GSK) India has completed acquisition of Novartis’ vaccines
business and divests its oncology portfolio to Novartis India. GSK acquired Novartis at an investment of
USD 7.1 billion. This transaction provides opportunity to GSK to build stronger, sustainable global vaccines
business, which will enhance GSK's vaccines. This acquisition will bring together its expertise in bacterial
infection, virology, and technological platforms for delivering a reliable supply of high quality vaccines.
With this acquisition, GSK while accessing Novartis vaccines business will cater to anti rabies and
meningitis vaccine.
