 Maharashtra, UK sign MoU for bike ambulances
The Maharashtra government and Healthcare UK signed an MoU on September 9, wherein the latter will
provide technical support to start bike ambulance service in Mumbai city. It will also train staff on how to
implement the service. Bike ambulances would useful in cities with traffic issues. Further, the MoU will
facilitate collaboration on a range of healthcare issues, ranging from professional skills development and
digital healthcare. Healthcare UK is a government initiative in Britain that assists healthcare providers in
UK to work abroad by creating international partnerships.

 Global hospital chains, PE eyeing to buy CARE’s stake
A syndicate comprising private equity group Abraaj, Everstone Group and PD Hinduja Hospital plans to
acquire Hyderabad-based hospital chain, CARE hospital, from its private equity owners, Advent
International. The other consortium which is also eyeing to buy the stake comprises Nectare Healthcare,
Bain Capital, Temasek Holdings and Baring Private Equity Asia. Both the consortia submitted binding
offers in August 2015 and final negotiations are in progress. The offers have valued the chain at INR 1,500
crore to INR 1,800 crore, including debts. The CARE Hospitals Group has 17 hospitals across nine cities in
India.
 ALIMCO to produce prosthetic system
Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) intends to produce technologically
advanced lower limb prosthetic system from its newly inaugurated production unit in Kanpur. It has
already signed two agreements -Technical Consultancy and Services and Transfer of Technology - with
Ottobock to mass manufacture affordable prosthetic systems for disabled persons. A camp was organized
by ALIMCO at Dehat district in Kanpur where artificial limbs and aids were distributed to 692 pre-
identified beneficiaries with different kind of disabilities.
 Parkway Healthcare to expand through acquisitions
Parkway Pantai, the world's second largest healthcare provider, aims to expand in India by acquiring
private hospitals. Inorganic growth is the preferred mode of expansion for most new entrants because to
launch a new facility in India requires nearly 70 clearances from federal and local authorities. This has
made expanding through acquisition more profitable. India’s private hospitals market is projected to be
worth USD 55 billion a year.
 Kargil army hospital conducted over 200 surgeries in 2014-15
In the last one year, doctors in Army Hospital in Kargil have conducted more than 200 surgeries on
patients who have limited access to proper healthcare facilities. During this period, the Kargil army
hospital conducted 105 major and 101 minor surgeries on civilian patients residing across the region.

 Carlyle acquired 37percent stake in Metropolis
US-based private equity firm Carlyle has purchased 37 percent in diagnostics chain Metropolis Healthcare
from one of its founder director GSK Velu. The deal was valued at INR 850 crore, putting total valuation
of the company at INR 2,300 crore. Earlier this year, the other co-promoter, Sushil Shah had increased his
stake in Metropolis to 63 percent from the previous 27 percent by acquiring the stakes of private equity
fund, Wardbug Pincus. The Indian diagnostics market is worth INR 20,000-25,000 crore, of which nearly
80-90 percent is in the unorganised space.
