Policy News
 Union government approves All India Institute of Ayurveda
In line with research and development in AYUSH as part of the National Policy for Indian Systems of
Medicine and Homoeopathy, 2002, the union government has approved the establishment of an All
India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in New Delhi. AIIA will function as an apex institute of Ayurveda and
to impart MD and PhD level education in traditional medicine. It will also have a 200-bedded referral
hospital. Construction of the institute and procurement of medical equipment and furniture are almost
complete. Central government has set up several Research Councils and executed a Central Scheme of
Extramural Research to support research and development in the area, including development of drugs
in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy.
 Union government to spread diabetes awareness
The union government plans to roll out diabetes awareness programme in six districts across the
country, as about 67 million people are suffering from the disease. Nearly 200 Ayurvedic, Homeopathic
and Allopathic doctors will be posted in each district to educate people on diabetes prevention and
healthy lifestyle through schools and village communities. The objective to of the programme is to
convert pre-diabetics to a normal state and insulin dependants to non-insulin state. The Confederation
of Indian Industries (CII) in association with Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly) has also released a national
document called "Synergizing Efforts in Diabetes Care at the Tertiary Level".
 'Pan-India trauma care network' for road mishap victims
The government plans to develop "pan-India trauma care network" at every 100-km on the national
highways, to bring down the number of unnecessary deaths in road accidents by 10 per cent. Since the
Eleventh Plan’s 'Capacity Building for Developing Trauma Care Facilities in Government Hospitals on
National Highways’ programme, 118 hospitals and medical colleges had been identified. Another 20
hospitals and medical colleges were picked under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana
(PMSSY) to developing trauma care facilities on highways. The primary objective of the network is to
ensure that no trauma victim has to be transported for more than 50-km. In 2013, 137,572 people
were killed in road accidents and 4,86,476 road mishaps took place in which 4,94,893 persons were
injured.

 Smile and Profile, Arogya Finance ink MoU
Arogya Finance and dental treatment center, Smile and Profile, entered into a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) for innovative medical loans, access to better healthcare and easy payment
solutions exclusively for Smile & Profile patients. The latter will refer patients with financial difficulties
to Arogya for rapid approval - within 3-24 hours in case of an emergency and within 72 hours in other
cases. The screening process of applicants would comprises in-depth personal discussion, timed
psychometric tests and collection of KYC documents.

 GSK rolls out tooth sensitivity awareness campaign
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) rolled out an awareness campaign for its flagship toothpaste brand Sensodyne,
which involved direct engagement with consumers, retail initiatives and efforts to increase digital
awareness. The campaign would help over 20 million people to identify the problem of tooth sensitivity,
in addition to boosting the company’s marketing through toothpaste sampling on trains, corporate
houses and door-to-door. In India, 35 percent of adults suffer from tooth sensitivity; the sensitivity
awareness index rose to almost 35 percent in 2014 from 17 percent in 2010.
 NDMC to launch e-hospital portal for healthcare units
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has approached the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to
configure e-hospital portals to improve patient care and operational efficiency in its health centers. NIC
would upload the proposed e-hospital software on its cloud services – a first ever initiative in India. E-
hospital shall enable NDMC to deliver health care services in a more effective and efficient way and help
its administrators to better monitor and control hospitals and dispensaries under its jurisdiction. The
outline of the e-hospital portal will be completed by October 2, 2015. Various modules such as patient
registration, emergency registration, billing and accounts, laboratory, blood bank management, pharmacy
management, among others, will available on the e-hospital portals.
 Health desks set up in Ganjam district
The Government of Odisha has set up health desks in all hospitals and Primary Health Centres (PHC) in
Ganjam district. This is a part of a 10 week malaria, dengue and diarrhoea (MDD) prevention programme,
launched on August 7 until October 17. The programme will be managed by women health supervisors
and will focus on maintaining cleanliness, boiled drinking water, destruction of mosquito breeding
grounds, use of nets, the preparation and use of ORS and so on. Ganjam district is widespread in vector
and water-borne diseases and has reported 115 diarrhoeal cases in the last seven months.

 Philips Healthcare plans to invest on Pune plant capacity
Philips Healthcare plans to invest USD 60 million over the next three to five years to double the
manufacturing capacity of its Pune plant under the public-private partnership(PPP) model. This move will
introduce new business lines such as ultrasound machines, CT scans and MRIs. It also plans to set up
seven radiology centres in Haryana and is planning another PPP initiative in Jharkhand. At present, Philips
manufactures high-end cath labs and mobile surgery equipment. The company has witnessed double-digit
growth for the past four to five years and expects 18 percent growth in the current fiscal. Philips
Healthcare India is worth about USD 300 million.
