This document summarizes the research of the Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn on the economics of land degradation. It describes two phases of research funded by the German ministry for economic cooperation. The first phase included case studies in multiple countries showing that the costs of action to reduce land degradation are typically lower than the costs of inaction. The current phase is developing a standardized global assessment methodology to apply in selected case studies and facilitate future comparisons. Key datasets and variables are identified to measure land degradation and its social and economic impacts.
