A small guide developed to address essential leadership qualities such as character, clarity, courage, coachability and competence of tomorrows leader.
4. • What are some leadership
principles that you wish you knew
beforehand?
• What do you know now that you
wish you knew then?
• What is the most important
message that next generation
leaders must know?
6. COMPETENCE
Channel
•Channel your strengths to
areas of leadership
where you are most likely
to succeed. (Build on
your strengths).
Do not attempt
•Do not attempt to do
everything because it can
limit productivity.
Know
•Know what you are good
at and focus and build
that strength.
7. • Two best kept secrets of Leadership
• The less you do, the more you can accomplish
• The less you do, the more you enable others to accomplish
• In short, leadership is about getting things done through other people.
• If we exert authority in an area where we lack competence, we derail
project's and demotivate those who have the skills we lack.
9. • Courage isn’t the absence of fear, but it rather assumes fear.
• A leader who refuses to move until there is no shred of fear will never move.(Lead)
• A leader must confront fear with boldness and a different mindset which provides an
advantage to the situation.
• Your eagerness to succeed as a leader must overcome your fear of failure.
• A leader must always take risk meaning progress requires change.
• A next generation leader fears missing out on a new opportunity
11. • A next generation leader must be clear even when he is in doubt of his decisions.
• The greater the uncertainty, the greater the need for leadership.
• People will follow you as a leader despite some mistakes and bad decisions.
• Clarity of vision will compensate for uncertainty in planning.
• If the leader is clear about his destination, he can manage a few detours along the
way.
13. • Coaching is not the same as counseling.
• A counselor will resolve past issues to help operate in the present.
• A coach helps one assess the present so they can operate effectively in the future.
• Coaching has three primary duties.
• Observe
• Instruct
• Inspire
• If you are not teachable, you are not coachable.
15. • Without character, your accomplishments become
irrelevant.
• Your character determines what people associate to your
name.
• Character is doing what is right because it is the right thing
to do regardless
of the cost.
Every leader’s character is tested, and the outcome tells your
followers if you are truly worth following or putting on a
facade to deceive them.
16. • This is one of the best reads I have ever had in my life because of the writing style
and the practical ways he presented his points.
• In a world where our attention span is getting shorter and shorter, being able to be
brief and straight to the point makes the difference.
• My favorite sayings in the book is “Leaders challenge what is for the sake of what
could and should be.
• Transitioning between chapters was flawless because his style of writing builds your
interest.
17. CONCLUSION
• Although some of the insights Stanley presented seem
elementary, these are often forgotten as leaders grow and
their ministries expand.
• To leave a legacy that goes beyond accomplishments,
leaders must devote themselves to matters of the heart.
• As ministries grow, as leaders mature, as skills are
obtained a leader must continually seek the hand on the
Lord in all he does.
• The only drawback to his book is that it is a short read.
• Personally, I would want to hear or read from Andy how the
next generation leader should respond to criticism.
• This is a must read for everyone not just a leader.
